Today we remember why Celtic started

305

You asked for it, many of you campaigned for it.  All of you debated it, expressed a view on it and now your wish has been granted.  The SPL voted 10-1 against parachuting Sevco into the league next season, with only Sevco itself voting for, and the Loyal Resisters abstaining.

Our fellow SPL clubs have spoken “unequivocally”, as have their fans.  To be fair to fans of former club, Rangers, many of them wanted no part in this shoddy arrangement.

Having won the argument we must now win the future.  As Celtic said in their statement yesterday:

“During Celtic’s long and illustrious 125-year history, there have been periods of difficulty.  At these times, our supporters have always stood shoulder to shoulder with the Club.  We need our supporters to be with us now, more than ever.

“We know our own supporters will be acutely aware of the significant challenges that lie ahead.  We enter next season as Champions of Scotland and look ahead to retaining our title and to making an impact in a European context.  We know how difficult this will be and we call on our supporters to join us in tackling these challenges, to take their place at Celtic Park, to invest in the Club and to continue to give us the kind of support for which they are renowned.”

The call has been made.  Now, more than any time apart from when Fergus issued a similar call in 1994, you need to step forward and buy a season ticket for the champions and only club in Scotland who have played their entire history in top flight football.

The important debate isn’t about Newco anymore, it’s now about Celtic.

I’ve read the doom and scaremongering this morning, some of which is downright inappropriate.  The grassroots fans who raised their voices and brought about this situation now have a responsibility to ensure our common future is successful.

There are many desperate for all or some of the 10 clubs who voted No yesterday to fail.  We have to ensure all succeed.  The forward plan for Celtic has to be a forward plan for Aberdeen, Dundee United, Hibs, Hearts, Motherwell and the rest.

All of these teams need a solution which allows them play competitive football in front of packed stadiums and to retain the talent they develop well into maturity.  Any plan which does not aim for this will fail.

If we achieve this, yesterday’s vote will be the day foundations were laid for a stunning sporting achievement.

More later.

I don’t need to tell any of you about Oscar Knox, the three-year-old who is currently going through chemotherapy.  We have all been touched by his photographs and TV appearance, while his dad has kept us up to date on the blog.

If you think our football club is worth stepping forward for, I make no apologies for asking you to dig deep twice today and remember why the entire Celtic project started.  Take a read at Oscar’s blog and get involved.

  1. Maybe it’s just me but shouldn’t the Chief executive of the SFA be looking after the needs and requirements of his law abiding member clubs and trying to put up a positive spin instead of wasting all of his time trying to justify why a club that has spent many years living way out of their means should be immediately given access to a place in the First division to the detriment of all members already there. This is a club that have connived, cheated the paying public out of fair competition, defrauded the British tax payer and all the while with an air of arrogance and superiority that is frightening to watch. For many years they proclaimed “We are the people”, with yesterday’s vote that myth should be forever laid to rest, to all of the clubs who stood up to the bullying and to the SFL clubs who have been dragged into it you have to say well done. Let them fall into the third division and work their way back in front of miniscule crowds. Never forget there were more people outside Ibrox in 1988 when they signed Maurice Johnston than their have been throughout all of the administration process.

    iBhoy, Celticbhoy,

Remember we are dealing with two different entities here – for the purposes of clarity hereafter referred to as Rangers (In Adminstration) and Sevco.

Rangers (In Administration) are in administration and therefore cannot sign anyone. They also don’t have a stadium or any players and as such will not be participating in any league next year, nor are they attempting to. They are however a member of the SPL until their share is transferred to Dundee or Dunfermline. Rangers (In Administration) was subject to an additional, consecutively running transfer embargo which they successfully challenged in court.

Sevco are not a member of the SFA or any league and therefore cannot register football players. They would like one day to become a member at which point they will be able to start registering players. One of the potential conditions of them being given favourable treatment vs. Spartans et al in terms of railroading their application for SFA membership through might be that they would accept the transfer embargo previously handed down to Rangers (In Adminstration), strengthening the illusion that Sevco and Rangers (In Administration) are the same thing. Even though they aren’t.

    Make sense? Good.

having seen so many post talking about how to support the clubs in

the spl clubs have voted NO to newco and kept the pressure on

some of the other clubs no doubt read this blog.

and could be a big help to unite them and keep them up to date with

    issues.

maybe we could have a list of all SFL clubs who are saying NO to newco.

would give them all some hope that we have not just abandoned the spl problem on to them

  12. I like my managers / administrators to be sharp, on the ball and have their finger on the pulse of whats going down in business and on the street (Lawell & Celtic) whereas I know Gypsy Lee has a lovely crystal ball, will fool the gullible and take their money (Doncaster, Regan & Scottish Meeja).

  14. The Ghood will prevail on

Paul, should our focus really move away from newhun just yet? Regan, a man who above all else is supposed to maintain the rules, standards and integrity of our game ‘without fear or favour’, is trying to drive a wrecking ball through said rules with, well, pure fear. Yesterday you indicated that newco’s best hope was cannabalising an existing club. Therefore I take it that are you confident that the SFL chairmen are going to do the right thing?

  15. The Mayans predicted the end of the world in 2012.

The Hopi Indian seer, Ornj Wanqua, predicted a cataclysmic event in 2012.

They did not not provide any further information, nor did they see that for a large part of the population of Scotland and the north of Ireland, the end of their world actually happened on 4th July 2012.

Tha Ancient Egyptians (Maz Onic Luj – High Priest of Imhotep III, philosopher, Grand Seer – 7th son of a 7th son no less!!), wrote in great detail of “the end of the history of a mysterious people to the north (the Hunnii), barbarians all, who ruled their land with an iron fist, forcing their will on their peaceful, innocent neighbours, the Timii.

Their foot-soldiers, the cruel Refies tribe, who traditionally dressed in black, carried out the will of the Hunnee, and blew rudimentary whistle to intimidate their enemies. They were eventually, after many years of one-sided warfare, weakened in a monumental battle with the Timii, which resulted in the loss of one of their generals, Doooooogii-Doooooogii. Furthermore, their leader, Hoo Dallassii was fatally wounded following another skirmish with the Timii. This weakened the Hunnii to such an extent, that they had to use all their gold from their treasury, plus that stolen from their innocent neighbours, in a vain attempt to maintain their lifestyle.

Eventually, they ran out of gold, and a new leader (Why Tee) emerged to take them over and attempted to lead them to glory once again. Why Tee was outed as a charlatan, and forcibly replaced in a coup by twin leaders (Duffii and Felpii), but they could do nothing except keep their own lifestyle going by using the dregs from the Hunnii treasury.

Another ancient race, the Aitchemarsee tribe, lent a helping hand to the innocents, by demanding the return of gold, illicitly obtained from them by the Hunnii.

Yet another colourful leader emerged, Chief Greennii, who tried bluster and threats, in conjunction with their long time allies, the Sfannii and the Splanni tribes, and tried to force their evil ways on the innocents.

This final attempt failed, and all of Timii, and the other tribes (the Sheepii, the Arabii, the Fartsii, the Hibii, etc), but not the Killii who still clung to the ways of the Hunnii, rejoiced and entered a new period of fraternity and friendship.

The Hunnii were cast out of the promised land, and consigned to hell (no actual location for hell has ever been confirmed, but Cowd-in-beath, ancient capital of the Pictii has been suggested.

It has been further suggested by modern day scholars, that the barbarians were the reason behind the ancient phrase “Tell them about the Hunnii, Mummy”.

  17. ALLY McCOIST has enjoyed countless

    memorable moments at Hampden

    throughout his illustrious career.

    Yesterday, the national stadium was

the venue for an event which would

once have been deemed too fanciful

    for even his worst nightmares.

Just before noon, McCoist drove away

    boardroom might yet spare Rangers

from the ignominy of expulsion from

    Scottish football’s top flight.

“Ally McCoist spoke from the heart

about his stance on matters that have

taken place since Rangers went into

    administration,” said SPL chief

    executive Neil Doncaster. “Rangers

newco gave a presentation, the clubs

considered it and the clubs said ‘No’.”

Great idea- have purchased a paving stone for me and my wee bhoy !! Can’t wait to get over to see it !

Am feeling ultra-enthused by the call-to-arms by Celtic in terms of supporting the club and so thinking seriously of buying a season ticket – won’t be able to use it this year certainly as I’m livin on the other side of the planet at the mo and so thinking of how best to purchase one and ensure it is used every match. Could leave it with my brother at home in Derry and it would get some usage, but still would prob be under-used due to the cost of travelling etc Is there some way people can buy a ST and donate to the good child foundation or the kano foundation in order to make sure it gets used every week ? Am sure I read somewhere of one of those charities having a number of season tickets which they use to bring kids to Celtic matches ?? Would appreciate any info from anyone in the know.

Mon the Hoops – we’re all in this together – let’s make sure Celtic thrive without the scum and at the same time send a message out to the rest of the country that we don’t need no stinkin Rangers !!

  25. Good article Paul

With the first league game now just over 4 weeks away it is surely time to forget about Club 13 and focus on Celtic.

I have a young person staying with me so I set him a task yesterday morning. The task was to calculate how many seats are taken for the game with Norwich City at Celtic park. He arrived at the figure of 43,685.My bet is that 99% of these are season book sales. he told me there were just two available places out of 1074 in section 111.

The thunder is back. let’s all make sure we’re part of it

PS Does anyone know when the friendy between Raith Rovers and Celtic is?

  28. Afternoon all.

With regards to Sky, as most of you are aware, their message throughout this has been along the lines that they intend to show SPL games this coming season.

I contacted them on Tuesday to find out about the first round of televised fixtures and they said they had “no information at this stage”. I note they have announced the first wave of EPL fixtures today and I also note from their live on Sky section of their website that they have 2 SPL games in for Sunday 5th August at 12.00 and 15.00 – both on Sky Sports 2 but no details of teams involved yet.

Given that the Champions are always on first game of the season, it looks like there may be a fair chance of our game being moved to the Sunday should the info on their website be accurate and pertaining to us.

Alternatively, I may be doing a bad Columbo job and putting 2 + 2 and getting anything but the correct answer.

One to watch if you have a distance to travel for the game.
