Tom, Davie, Development Squad face Valencia

Good luck to the Development Squad for their Uefa Youth League one-off cup tie against Valencia this evening. A win would see Celtic proceed to the quarter final – no mean feat when you consider the way some bigger league clubs harvest scores of youth players from across the globe.

Kick-off is 5pm, if you can get to Celtic Park. It’s not THE Champions League, but it’s an important metric we should follow.

Delighted Davie Hay and Tom Boyd are  Celtic Ambassadors. I see enough of what the Celtic support to here to know the value of the club, but we can never take these values for granted. The Celtic Movement needs leaders. Davie and Tom have been informal ambassadors of the club for years, as many of you can testi

  3. Gearóid: FG and Labour will lose seats. I don’t think they will form a government on their own. FG will have to choose from SF, FF, AAA and/ or a plethora of independents. I hope they will choose FF.

The following election will then be crucial:will the republican/left unite and offer a realistic alternative?

An interesting aspect of this campaign is the amount of candidates in each constituency. AAA seem to have candidates in every constituency in Dublin but People Bofore Profit are putting up candidates also which makes no sense to me. I think this split in the vote will help FF gain seats where they would have gone to progressive candidates otherwise.

    Interesting times ahead.

I agree Labour should have stayed in opposition in 2011 but the milk is spilt. The result then was a record hence a lot of the voters were clearly fair weather, probably disgruntled FF voters. When you are in a party you have to stay and try to change it, so I will persevere. The voters probably won’t. Trouble is they will vote for either of the Tories or for Sinn Fein . None of this makes political sense but as I say, that is the fun and games in Irish politics. Not really a predominantly Socialist country as far as I can see(happy to be proved wrong) , just pockets in cities. I think Scotland is different due to the industrial history, socio-economics and UK set up.

Anyway, the founder of my party has just appeared as a vision in the head of my pint to tell me he was kidding about the socialist politics and was really a fundamentalist Catholic all along. I can safely say that ;-)

  7. Have to say lurking hasn’t been a lot of fun lately between one thing and another. But who am I to criticise when I contribute virtually nothing? For some reason I keep coming back. I watched the development team game against Valencia this evening and just logged in to read the updates on the match with the benefit of hindsight. Absolutely brilliant reading- a reminder of what it’s all about for me.

  8. To keep with the Spanish theme, this Saturday in Glasnevin at 1.30pm, there is a rededication of the headstone of Frank Ryan of The International Brigade.

    An interesting man.

No party political banners, only the Tricolour,Starry Plough, Catalan, Basque flags.

  10. Coneybhoy: It is a pity that the Labour Party joined in the last government but when it merged with the remnants of the political wing of the official IRA, I think that was its death knell.

I don’t know what the future holds, but a coherent, realistic alternative to FG/FF has to be the future.

For me, a realistic opposition needs to formed, hopefully that will come about after the next election. Vote 1 – 23 in order of your choice:-)

Read an article not too long ago about how the struggle for Independence and the lack of an industrial revolution prevented the emergence of a strong Labour Party when it was the norm in most other European countries. Labour in Ireland were conflicted (apart from the leader on the head of your pint) Author was a guy called Rooney. Think what happened in 2009 has saw the emergence of a more ideological body politic. Problem, as Almore states above, there are more schisms in the Left in Irish politics than there are varieties of baked beans. It’s certainly going to take another couple of elections for the left to get its act together.
