Tom, Davie, Development Squad face Valencia

Good luck to the Development Squad for their Uefa Youth League one-off cup tie against Valencia this evening. A win would see Celtic proceed to the quarter final – no mean feat when you consider the way some bigger league clubs harvest scores of youth players from across the globe.

Kick-off is 5pm, if you can get to Celtic Park. It’s not THE Champions League, but it’s an important metric we should follow.

Delighted Davie Hay and Tom Boyd are  Celtic Ambassadors. I see enough of what the Celtic support to here to know the value of the club, but we can never take these values for granted. The Celtic Movement needs leaders. Davie and Tom have been informal ambassadors of the club for years, as many of you can testi

I know , but it seems so much more fun here than in Scotland(when I was there)

I think you are right but as with Celtic I love Labour through and through.

  2. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

My son and I are just back from the game at Celtic Park tonight.

A good experience seeing some of our youth team playing.

I was very impressed with Chris McCart’s son , Jamie , Mark Hill (i think he was our number 8) , Regan Hendry and Jack Aitchson. We were in the front stand and young McCart defended well and was always talking to his team mates.

The Valencia players seemed fitter and a bit faster, their big number 7 thought he was Ronaldo.

The bhoys played better in the second half but didn’t seem to know how to deal playing against ten men.

The ref’s decision near the end when the Valencia player fell , was absolutely ridiculous.

Ronny was sitting with John Collins and John Kennedy was sitting beside Wullie McStay with former Hearts manager, John McGlynn ( I think he is one of our scouts) , nearby.

Nice to see Broonie helping with the coaching tonight.

  3. Interesting debate on our inability to take a decent throw-in.

The history of the game shows that in the original Laws of the game(1800’s) the throw-in was taken by the team who put it out of play. He who hits it, goes and gets it.

Similar to rugby union the ball was thrown in two handed above the head, and as with rugby however it had to be thrown 90 degrees. I assume the idea was that the advantage lay with the team who had 11 men on the park.

When I first discovered this it made me think,…. maybe that the whole rule should be reviewed as the team taking the throw-in is often disadvantaged

    1. Sacrificing a man to take the throw

    2. Having to use a technique that hinders ,and usually prevents ,a short throw.

There should be no reason why this could not be addressed eg allow one handed throw which could ‘launch’ a ball into the opposition penalty box. This would change the dynamic of the game as it would give some advantage back to the attacking team when the defence clear their lines by putting it to row Z.

Whilst I am on the hobby horse…

    Onlooker Rule change 2

Corners to be taken NOT from the edge of the pitch but from a spot ( at least a few yards further onto the pitch well OUTSIDE the corner segment.

My logic is that most modern pitches prevent the player easily delivering a decent corner. They are usually about 4 inches above the ash track which surrounds the playing surface, the pitch uses all available area apart from the linesman’s . At Celtic Park in swinging corners are OK as the player runs from behind the goal line from a good area of grass on the same level. However it is difficult to take an out-swinger as the player has to either run along the narrow strip of grass running almost in the opposite direction to which he wishes to direct the ball or negotiate the step up.

No wonder so many of our corners are poorly delivered.

  4. Come the revolution,I would like to see Tom Boyd and Willie McStay have bigger roles in about the first team.

  5. Hope Ronny and the squad are watching Peterborough – now that’s what a ‘pressing’ game looks like – saying that WBA look as bad as Celtic against Ross County.

The Onlooker…I’m not too keen on changing any more rules of the game. Such a complicated mess was made of the offside law, however, you make some good points re the throw-in.

Unfortunately the best thing that could happen to labour in this election would be for them to get zero votes. Then it might just dawn on them what the price is for betraying those vulnerable in society. You expect right wing policies from right wing parties but the labour party ( or the disgusting opportunists who pass themselves off as the labour party) should not enable them in the manner that they did

Roisin shorthall is the only one I would have any respect for. She resigned from the parliamentary party when she saw what was happening

Reading that Madden apologised to halliday for sending him off last year. If he took the time to check the video it was indeed a red card offence

    The inspirational James Connolly.

James Connolly didn’t ask for a copy of The Communist or Das Kapital just before he faced the firing squad.

James Connolly instead made his peace with God and found solace and comfort in his Christian faith.

I think that it can be safe to say that Connolly, during his final hours on this earth totally rejected the teaching Karl Marx and his literary work.

Coneybhoy: I think WITS is right, the Labour Party will lose most of their seats, largely due to going into government when a Fine Gael/ Fianna Fáil coalition last time around would have left the Labour Party leading a united Left alliance this time around.

Boundary changes make this election difficult to predict but I would be very surprised if FG/Lab will make up the numbers on their own to form the next government.

    Hi TBJ

I just happened to log in there and saw your post.

So yes, still about, not been posting as much lately, also not got to as many games this season as I’d have liked due to various reasons. But hopefully can get back shortly to cheer us on to the title.

Maybe if he watched last nights shambles.

  25. Watching the WBA game, we should have pursued James Maclean two years ago, far superior to SA or GMS. I tell you what, he would not be pushed of the ball as easy as our midfield was last Wednesday at Pittodrie. Also he would wind the Zombies up no end!!!
