Tom, Davie, Development Squad face Valencia

Good luck to the Development Squad for their Uefa Youth League one-off cup tie against Valencia this evening. A win would see Celtic proceed to the quarter final – no mean feat when you consider the way some bigger league clubs harvest scores of youth players from across the globe.

Kick-off is 5pm, if you can get to Celtic Park. It’s not THE Champions League, but it’s an important metric we should follow.

Delighted Davie Hay and Tom Boyd are  Celtic Ambassadors. I see enough of what the Celtic support to here to know the value of the club, but we can never take these values for granted. The Celtic Movement needs leaders. Davie and Tom have been informal ambassadors of the club for years, as many of you can testi

TBJ, at half time of our home game against Killie last November, Madden was awful in the first half. When he came off at half time , he stared at our support as if to say i’m getting paid £800 to pee you lot right off.

In the Motherwell game last December he was as bad as he was at the Killie game.

We were poor in each of the above matches but his performances were bad as ours.

  3. The Onlooker,

Im not sure if the throw in should be changed. When a team kicks the ball out they give up possession therefore the other team is given it. If you have a boy that can take a shy the proper way it should be to your advantage hitting the penalty spot or flinging downfield to a speedy half or winger. There was a boy in the EPL Fulham I think who take a shy and they scored a few from his throws maybe delapp. But I deffo think they should change the offside rule back as refs don’t know how to interpret it, if your off your off, simples

WITS – Richard Wurmbrand is another great inspiration and hero of mine.

Did you know that Richard Wurmbrand made the case, and a rather convincing one it must be said – that Karl Marx, was in fact, a Satanist?

He IS one of the better officials. However that’s damning him with faint praise.

He does try to let games go without brandishing cards. He had our recent Friday night trip to DU. While he yellow carded LG for goal celebration, he let go poor challenges by Johansen and, in particular, Armstrong.

It could be argued that game is a poor example given how it panned out.

I have watched games he has refereed not involving Celtic. He is one of the less inconsistent and generally makes fewer mistakes.

Good shout re Roisin Shorthall. Partic liked the way she called out Ryan when he was the Health Minister over the citing of two clinics in his Constituency. Brown paper bagism at its worst and Gilmore wouldn’t back her on it. Stephen Donnelly an effective performer as well. Labour will get their just deserts on Feb26th.

    Interesting one.

I had a quick look at the bbc updates of tonight’s Ross County Hearts game.

After Hearts first goal, County goalie, Scott Fox, complained to the ref about him being impeded at the goal.

Maybe our refs think goalies being impeded is now acceptable.

Hamiltontim, in the run up to Tommy Coyne leaving us, it was when he was his best football for us. I didn’t particularly like him but his performances were improving and was disappointed we sold him.

The death of his wife while he was playing for Tranmere must have been horrific for him and his family.

  22. Police concern at return of ‘casual culture’ in Scottish football

    By Chris McLaughlin

    BBC Scotland

Organised hooligan gangs have attached themselves to two-thirds of Scotland’s senior clubs, say Police Scotland.

And only seven of the 42 SPFL clubs are categorised as having no risk supporters.

A BBC Scotland investigation also found police are concerned by a return of the ‘casual culture’ prevalent in the 1980s and 1990s.

The Scottish government has issued a total of 579 football banning orders since their introduction 10 years ago.

‘Resurgence in the casual hooligan element’

“It’s fair to say that in the last couple of years we have seen a resurgence in the casual hooligan element,” said assistant chief constable, Bernhard Higgins.

“In the last two seasons we have had a number of very high profile incidents where fans have clashed a mile away from the stadium or clashed two-and-a-half hours before a match.

“People can get in touch with each other much easier through social media and through mobile phones.

“If you look at the European scene there’s been a resurgence in the Ultra fans groups, so that might be percolating down to Scotland.

“I have to make it clear though that the vast majority of games pass off without incident.”

    ‘Not football supporters’

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster is also keen to stress that point and highlights the work being done to make stadiums safe places.

“We strive continually to improve in this area and help make the game as accessible as possible for all generations, with designated family areas and positive initiatives such as free tickets for young people common across many of our clubs,” he said.

“We are very clear in the message that anyone who doesn’t behave is not welcome at or around our stadiums and, indeed, these people are not entitled to call themselves football supporters.

Rangers v Celtic in the 1980 Scottish Cup final

“As a wider, societal problem only a collaborative and thoughtful approach can begin to tackle the unacceptable behaviour which these people choose to indulge in, not to mention the issues behind them happening in the first place.

“Scottish football has a part to play in this – tens of thousands of great people attend our matches every week and they are a force for positive change.”

    ‘Middle class high-jinx’

Earlier this month, the SPFL recruited Karyn McCluskey, of the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit, in a non-executive director role.

And the governing body has set up a working group to examine the issue of unacceptable conduct.

However, one former football hooligan believes the current problems pale in comparison with days gone by.

“In the 1980’s you had young men coming from urban areas into city centres to cause large scale disruption involving CS gas, petrol bombs and knives – a huge gang culture,” explained Bradley Welsh, a once notorious casual who followed Hibernian.

“What you have now is a bunch of young middle class lads wearing designer clothes and going along seeking high-jinx for self-esteem – there’s a huge difference.”
