Tomorrow is Celtic’s biggest game since Seville

441

Tomorrow’s Scottish Cup final is Celtic’s biggest game since Seville. Having banked our 100th trophy, and an invincible league title, the opportunity to achieve a clean sweep of domestic trophies without loss of a single game is wholly without precedent. Even the Lions didn’t achieve this.

We are in an incredibly special season, an incredibly special time, for the club. When anything seems possible, it is hard to properly evaluate just how well things are going. We have had many title winning seasons, but the club’s trajectory, not to mention the sheer enjoyment of what we’re watching, has seldom come close to this season.

We face the club who have pushed us most in recent years at Hampden. They will arrive rightly believing they can win the trophy. It will be a huge task for Aberdeen, , but the odds on them taking the cup back north with them will be considerably less than those against Celtic completing an undefeated season a year ago.

Congratulations to the Celtic FC Foundation and everyone at the club who contributed to the incredible event at The Hyrdro last night. The scale and sheer professionalism of the night belied the fact that everyone involved were miles out of their comfort zone.

It was an incredible Celtic event. Thanks also to the performers who donated their time to the Foundation for free.

See you later at Greenock!

  1. Welcome to Page 5.

How good has this Blog been over the past week! Beautiful, wonderful, magical.

We are on the brink of an historic achievement. I have total faith in Brendan’s Bhoys.

  2. OK, you’ve all inspired me to share my memories of 25/5/67.

It’s a bizarre story for a couple of reasons.

I was coming up for 7 and was, like every other 7 year old in Kirkintilloch, banished to the swing park behind St Flannans Primary School for the duration of the game. The park was crammed with every kid I knew. We sang all the Celtic songs. The main one was: we’ve got Ronnie Simpson, Number 1, we’ve got the best team in the land. Right through to: we’ve got Jock Stein, manager, we’ve got the best team in the land. That took bloody ages!

I left the park and started to walk past the school gates towards Fellsview Rd where my granny lived – and where I practically spent my childhood.

I saw a guy with a tranny. No, not THAT type! I asked him the score and he said ” wan each. As I turned into the street I heard a loud roar. Someone’s front door opened and an overweight guy came out and tried to do a somersault on his front lawn. It wasn’t pretty.

The odd thing is that I have absolutely no recollection of anything else from that day. Nothing!

The next day all the kids lined up in the playground from P7 to P1 and we did a lap of honour round the ash football park. There was that much dust kicked up it was like an episode of The High Chapperal.

The bizarre thing is this. I’ve yet to meet ANYONE who was in that swing park that day. Everyone swears that they not only watched the whole game but (at 7) had their first pint.

Were any CQNers in the swing park that day?

BTW I’m currently in the highlands as my daughter went through laser eye surgery earlier today. Any CQNers in Evanton?

  3. Scottish Cup Final 1967

    Celtic 2-0 Aberdeen

This was a final I remember very little of.

    Unremarkable.

Apart from the fact that it was the day after my 20th birthday.

Willie Wallace scored twice, both goals from cutbacks. A poacher in his prime.

They were scored within 5 minutes or so, either side of half time.

I was impressed by Jimmy Smith playing inside forward for Aberdeen.

He was the only Aberdeen player to create any kind of resistance to the efficient and relentless Celtic attacking.

We were nearing the end of our momentous season and matches were coming thick and fast.

We played 7 games in April and Ronnie, Tommy, Willie and Bobby had also appeared in Scotland’s 3-2 win at Wembley against the then world champions.

Four days earlier we had defeated Dukla to qualify for Lisbon.

Of course this victory would be the third leg of an unprecedented quintuple, with us clinching the league a week later at a rain sodden Ibrox with a 2-2 draw and of course, in case anyone should forget, that memorable day in Lisbon on the feast of Corpus Christi.

    https://youtu.be/8IvaEhjS_7o

Another controlling performance tomorrow and similar poaching prowess will ring the curtain down nicely on our INVINCIBLE season.

  4. Apart from one balatant plonker intrusion, these have been great times on CQN.

I do not fear that the lack of comment on here about tomorrow’s game or the focus on 50 years ago will be a distraction or sign of complacency.

We are fans and do not need to prepare for the game. When we turn up at Hampden tomorrow, we will do what we lawyas do and are practised in doing- we will support our team.

Brendan Rodgers and the players, on the other hand, will never have lost focus this week. They are making their own history and Aberdeen will have to be very very ery very good to stop them.

    These are the days

    These are the days.

    These are days you’ll remember.

Never before and never since, I promise, will the whole world be warm as this.

And as you feel it, you’ll know it’s true that you are blessed and lucky.

It’s true that you are touched by something that will grow and bloom in you.

    These are days you’ll remember.

When May is rushing over you with desire to be part of the miracles you see in

    Every hour.

You’ll know it’s true that you are blessed and lucky.

It’s true that you are touched by something that will grow and bloom in you.

    These are days.

These are the days you might fill with laughter until you break.

These days you might feel a shaft of light make its way across your face.

And when you do you’ll know how it was meant to be.

See the signs and know their meaning.

It’s true, you’ll know how it was meant to be.

Hear the signs and know they’re speaking to you, to you.

Thank you! I was at the Hydro last night it was an incredibly special and emotional time.

Folks, we sing that this is what it feels to be Celtic. What a wonderful feeling.

Not one of their players would get in our team and perhaps at a push 2 on our bench. We have the better manager – he reads the game superbly and changes it before problems arise. McInnes does not. We have solutions on the bench, and the players can play 3, 4, 5 at the back and with 1 striker or none, diamond, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3.

The only thing Aberdeen have not had in any of our meetings this year is blind luck. Also, we have played well against them and not turned in a stinker. I don’t expect that as Rodgers has them ready as evidenced in all the big games this season bar 2 (Barcelona away and Borussia at home). He rescued the situation against Hapoel in the 2nd half.

So I can’t say I’m fearful. Watchful? Well we all know football and its propensity to kick you in the knackers. But not tomorrow? Surely?

PS I love this dear place and know the love and effort that has gone into it but gosh it is hard to use!

  14. Hi Bhoys,

Sorry to interrupt the good mood of the blog, but we got some bad news today. My sister-in-law, who is in hospital, was given the bad news that the chemotherapy had stopped working and that there was no other treatment. She is only in her 50s. So for those of you who believe in prayer, can please ask for your prayers?

    Thanks and HH
