Topping’s who knew what when?

2675

In his Q&A session with the Daily Record yesterday, outgoing SPFL chairman, Ralph Topping touched on the subject of who knew what when, regarding Rangers slide into liquidation saying:

“There wasn’t one single person ever who envisaged this case happening. You tell me who pointed out that this was going to happen – did you?

“The biggest assumption about the set-up in the SPL would be that you would have Rangers and Celtic playing in it in perpetuity – nobody thought that those two bastions of football would ever be involved in anything like this and nobody flagged it up.”

Well, in October 2011 I knew.  This CQN article from 27 October 2011 notes in very specific detail Rangers were going to liquidate, a phoenix would be created which wanted direct access to the SPL (the top flight at that time).  I got the timing wrong, predicting the phoenix would take place during the season, but to be fair, it later became clear this was Craig Whyte’s plan at the time.

Ralph Topping’s SPL knew too.  Rangers alerted them to the situation that very month.  The SPL spend November, December and January preparing the ground for Rangers administration and liquidation, a period during which a new TV deal was signed.

Some Chinese mathematicians did a calculation on the chances of getting 10 heads in a row in a coin toss after Derren Brown did it in one of his shows. They worked out the odds were 1/1024 so 15 consecutive home draws by my calculations would be 1/32,768

    Look at like betting odds

Would a bookmaker give you just evens for tossing 4 heads in a row – should give you 16/1

    ————

    That’s a different bet.

He would give you evens on the next toss not on 4 tosses in a row

I wasn’t aware today was the anniversary of England winning the World Cup in ’66 so it’s lucky Clare Balding managed to mention it within 30 seconds of the program starting.

that’s the point it is on consecutive home draws – not the chance in each individual draw.

Ask a bookie what odds he will give on 5 consecutive home draws (nb if its sevco he will only give odds on)

we shouldnt be complaining about sevco getting a home draw

    we got one as well

The question was what are the odds of a home draw.

Now at the start of every draw the odds are reset for every team so it’s 50/50.

Now if you’d said 5 years ago that the huns would get a home tie every round then of course you wouldn’t get 50/50 odds. Though it’s 50/50 chance each time the draw is made.

Though you’d have lost your money when they drew away to Dunfermline.

  11. lets all do the huddle on

a bookies wouldnt give you evens on the next toss of a coin

they would likely give you around 4-5

FB- Cathro will be lucky to see next weekend, Hartley has done very well at Alloa and Dundee, who pulled the trigger too early, all these clubs go through a period when they get 2 draws in 10 for example, Dundee had that late in the season. Was good to see Brendan taking him to Lennoxtown for a few sessions.HH

  24. FAIRHILL BHOY @ 6:44 PM,

    Good shout, think he’d do a job…

We need Hearts to come above…

Was really disappointed in Ann Budge I must say but, they are a Club that are getting there house in order, have huge potential – they should be Competitive in Europe.

With Aberdeen and Hibs fighting it out for Second and Third, at the end of the Season, so we could have another European Spot up for grabs;)

Interesting that Brendan played KT at centre half again yesterday. Getting the feeling that Brendan might see that as his best position in the years to come. Paulo Maldini could switch between both positions effortlessly. Not that I’m comparing Maldini with one of the greatest defenders of all time!
