Travel bans and Uefa forfeit

208

Uefa’s decision yesterday, that if a club cannot visit to play a Champions or Europa League qualification game due to travel restrictions, if must forfeit the tie, will force some harsh planning on Celtic.

Travellers from a specific nation could be prohibited from entering Scotland, while Celtic players could be quarantined if they travel to that country.  In this event, Celtic would probably have to base their European squad in a (relatively) safe European country until the ban was lifted or quarantine restrictions expire, or withdraw from the European competition.  Neither prospect is appealing.

The problem does not expire after the qualifiers; governments will remain edgy about spikes as they arise for months to come.

The consequences of the crisis for season 2019-20 were almost impossible to imagine as recently as February.  It feels optimistic that plans for season 2020-21 will go without a hitch.  Contingency plans should note we may need a larger than normal squad.  All rivalries aside, this is one season where it would be useful to have our domestic competitors involved in European football as often as we are.

About 3 years ago I read an article about EPL finances. The writer demonstrated a near exact correlation between money spent on players and final league positions – the more money spent, the higher the league spot. This is far from any Corinthian ideal but it is what it is.

The thing that disappoints is that the sports media have collectively taken a vow of silence about the sources of, say, Man City’s or Chelsea’s finances. From Sky to BT to ITV and on to the BBC even to raise the issue of dirty money is taboo.

  4. Just passed my local – about 20 outside with no social distancing – looked like a funeral wake. Certainly not one family

And look at the rubbish last night , Fulham receive how much, no one is interested in the rest of the EPL , it’s disgraceful and shows why we are ridiculed by fans in the lower leagues in England who think money makes them a team

That’s my worry. If that mob, or anyone else, fall behind us in the league they’ll pronounce COVID is rampant within their squad and call for null and void. If by any chance they are ahead of us at anytime they’ll call for the league to be declared theirs.

SPFL must declare a minimum amount of fixtures played before anyone can be declared champions. Declare it now so everyone knows the score and commit to it.

Looking at our squad gives me the confidence that we shall prevail. Even more so if Lenny gets his 2-3 in. Even more, more, so if Eddy remains.

  8. Kind of embarassing being an Aberdonian at the moment. 🐏

The only thing this proves is that people can’t be trusted to behave in a responsible way, considerate of others, and are unable to follow saftey advice.

The vast majority can, but it doesn’t take many to spoil it for everyone else.

The surprising thing is that these outbreaks haven’t been more frequent. Looking at the pictures from up and down the UK , I’ve seen far worse scenes than those currently being shared on social media.

    This won’t be the last.

    Stay safe everyone 👍

  9. Governments are telling people pubs and restaurants are open but you need to observe social distancing and hygiene rules. However a lot seem to only hear up to the word open.

  10. Gene,

More than that, we are actively being encouraged to use pubs and restaurants.

The ” Eat out to help out ” scheme is proving very popular.

I am now completely baffled by government contradictions.

Seemingly if you are contacted by test and trace ( Or whatever it’s called today ) you have to self isolate for 14 days, even if the test proves negative.

The government states that this is because the result may change in the next few days.

What exactly is the point of a test if the results are meaningless.?

Gene – I remember listening to Dr Fauci in the USA announcing their four phase plan for re-opening America.

Said to Wee BGFC at the time that many of them would hear nothing after the word “reopen” – to many selfish idiots to rely on the rules to be followed.

It is especially unrealistic to expect social distancing rules to be followed in pubs – as alcohol consumption increases, care and compliance decreases.

This wee virus only needs a small chink of an opportunity to spread like wildfire – opening pubs provides that opportunity probably more than any other relaxation of lockdown.

  16. I just wish the Owners/chairmen of the top teams in all the small countries could get locked in a room and not be allowed out until they come up with a plan to form a feasible break away league / leauges . I know Belgium and Holland are in discussion about this , would hope that PL is in the loop along with many others . A league based on strict FFP and actually champion the fact that this is the case . Have rules in place whereby a clubs wage bill can not exceed say 60% of its total income ( im not an accountant but you get the general drift ) Im sure fans all over Europe welcome something along these lines . The wages being paid by the Top teams is disgusting . I honestly feel that nothing will get any better for us and indeed clubs from the smaller countries unless we make drastic changes , With what is going on in the world at the moment , this might be the time to think out the box and tell UEFA to do one. The powers that be at Celtic have no other ambitions other than to be a little bit better than Rangers . We need to broaden our horizons and it will never happen as long as we are stuck in this league. PL and the gang should be making this their top priority . Maybe they are pushing for change behind the scenes , no idea. If we win 10 I think there may be a fall in interest in the years after this . Ok we can ” go for 55″ but I fear that the total lack of proffessionalism within Scottish football will mean playing against even weaker teams at home . Sorry if Its a bit of a downbeat post but I really think that we have reached a point where we and all clubs outwith the big 5 countries need to knock heads together and break from UEFA

  17. Football a working class

mans sport, took over buy capitalism and them greedy ones in the Stock Market, also that mob at Sky Sports and the BBC the lot off them making a good living on the back of real working people, well what do you expect from middle class rogues.

  18. Blantyre Tim

Firstly I hope you are well and dealing with the challenges as best as can be.

Secondly I can’t see what was wrong with my dads opinion on previous thread. He would say it every week as we walked away from the chapel at mass.

He was trying to explain to me why all these ‘wise old men’ used to moan about how bad Celtic were and how Rangers were going to win the league this season ( this was in the period 1968-73 ) because we were not up to it anymore etc etc. He was a plumber at the time working 60 hour weeks and he enjoyed the football faith and family. It was his view that Celtic allowed escapism and an association with success for some and also gave them something to moan about and ‘kick’ metaphorically. It was a distraction from dreary lives where they were often unfulfilled. It had been so since he was born in 1931 and always been so he felt.

This was his sentiment. His rationale to me, an 8 year old boy. I actually still think similar does apply today. Football ( and esp Celtic ) in its flirtations and vicarious connection with success and failure IS a great escape for many people from our day to day pressures.

You may see it differently. That is fine if so. None of the above is elitist in any way in my view. It affects all demographics who connect with the game.

Massive disappointment last season. We could have buried them in Denmark after 20 minutes. I’ve just erased CP from my memory now..

  24. We lost composure against Copenhagen. Hopefully we learn from it. Through to the quarters with one off games is a helluva opportunity for them.

Copenhagen were totally average, and teams we should be beating in Europe, and please, no ‘we just expect to beat these teams’ bollox, I have watched their games on Eurosport since lockdown, and they have been absolute shite

  29. Right now there’s a wee bit of hysteria on another site about the huns new signings, I’m not a member of this site just a lurker due to the perceived amount of hunterlopers on it.

It’s just the same old same old since victor frankenstein aka big hauns charles green created his monster.

IMHO our reaching the nine again was more devastating tae the huns than the 10; there are huns out there that possibly have no idea we done it first so our equaling them is akin to us when they reached the same plateau.

Our doing it in 1974, that’s 46 year ago and 23 later they did it, again it’s my opinion it’s like when we beat them 7-1 they would come back with”but we beat you 8-1”, most of our response, after we had asked our da’s, was “that was 14 year ago before we were born and during the war tae so disnae count”.

Personally I was more gutted that they equaled Jock’s fantastic achievement, 10, 11, 12 etc meant nothing tae me at that time, although like all of us I was over the moon when Harald’s insurance marker went in.

Let’s cast our minds back to the summer of 97, for all they had clinched the 9 we were only 5 points and 6 GD behind them, we were also 15 points and 33 GD ahead of 3rd place Arabs, with a spanking new stadium.

Having spent 8 million pounds that season there was also the humiliation of losing the SC semi replay at hades to a lower league side which possibly signaled the end of the road for TB, although one contributor to the Big Lhist with the same name reckoned we were 2 years too late.

So here we were heading into a season where deidco spent 14.5 million, got off tae a flyer in the League, although if the truth be told negri’s first goal that day never crossed the line, the day after a tottie “©” the Big Lhist laid one on a plate for Chic Charnley at Easter Road and yet were out of both European and the League Cup competitions by the end of September.

Meanwhile, the “second worst thing to hit Hiroshima” joins us in the dugout on July 3rd. He does however surround himself with Celtic mhen who were winners with the club and brings in his former protégé Henrik Edward Larsson along with Darren Jackson, Craig Burley, Regi Blinker, Jonathon Gould, Marc Rieper and in November and December Paul Lambert and Harald Martin Brattbackk.

Initially, not a lot there tae put yer hoose on us winning the League, in fact comments coming from Upton Park were along the lines they would drive the Grim Rieper tae Parkheid themselves.

However, even with negri scoring 33 goals before the end of the year, his final two on the day we dropped 3 points up at Perth, he would only contribute 4 more during the second half of the season one of those in the cup, they would drop 8 points before a Burley/Lambert double gave us all 3 points at new year.

So much for the genius, who gained his knighthood for his service to business, in pumping his manager, who spent over £50m on transfer fees in his six years in charge, only 2 months intae the season, not only that he dumped gazza aka the FGB and told both gorams aka the flying pig their days were numbered.

After dropping 6 points at the start of the League campaign we went off on a wee run and were a point ahead of deidco before facing them with 7 players making their Glasgow Derby debut, it was also alleged Celtic supporter Kenny Clark’s debut where he set his stall with yellow carding 5 Celts including a double yellow for Stephane Mahe, we also lost big Alan after 14 minutes with guff pointing 10 fingers in the air 15 minutes later.

The following week with both Davie Hay and Danny Crainie shown the door we faced bottom side Motherwell at home, losing 0-2 with wee Regi, who had a Stinker the week before, getting red carded, things wurnae looking good.

And then the tide turned on a game that had been postponed due tae a royal princess losing her life in a Paris tunnel. As usual the FGB fouled his way all through the game until the Scottish Collina had enough and red carded him for another assault this time on big Greenock but then against the run of play the squash player put them ahead.

It seemed to be another “I’ve passed this way before” when in the last minute from a sublime Jackie Mac cross big Alan leaped above their thuggish defence tae bullet the ball home. Bedlam at Parkheid and tae put more icing on the cake durie was red carded in the tunnel while poxie knoxie in the referee’s room.

Incidentally the ref never officiated another Premier League game that season, nae wonder he gave them 3 penalties several years later up in Dundee.

That set us on the one road again and 2 weeks later we won our first LC in 15 years and only our 2nd trophy in the 90s.

Although we lost up at Perth on December 27, minus Henrik and through a scrambled o’boyle goal, he would make up for that on May 3rd, our only other loss in the League came at hades where once again looking like a TB side we pummeled them only to lose out to 2 break away goals.

This result though put us level on points with them but they were ahead on goal difference at the top of the league, so it was still all to play for but thanks to Ally Mitchell it all ended well although after our 2-0 win at New Year they dropped 15 points on the run in so see that 14.5 million it was all for nothing as they also lost the SC at Parkheid tae.

The season our 10 was stopped Jock’s side won 3 trophies, naesurnames in his nane, so let’s stop worrying about who they sign and how many, it’s all about quality no quantity.
