Understanding the perpetrators walked among us

485

We will never know the scale of sexual abuse in our institutions, or how far back in history they go; “historic” covers a lot of ground.  What we know for sure is the lifelong damage caused by this abuse.  Yesterday’s SFA review, apologies from clubs and the Association, and many criminal convictions, cannot repair the damage done, but it vindicates those who brought the issue to light.

It is hard to understand that the perpetrators walked among us, lived otherwise normal lives and held positions of respect.  It could be decades before we know if the problems of the past persist today, such is the imbalance of power between abuser and victim.  As a society, as families or as parents, we cannot be complacent.  Boys clubs, churches and youth organisations were targeted in the past, but if these types still walk among us, and they almost certainly do, they will look where vigilance is less.

    ‘Celtic Target Pole’.

Question is, WHO at Celtic is targeting ‘’the Pole’?

The CEO, the manager, the head of recruitment?

We know it’s unlikely to be the former and the latter two will be exiting stage left by the end of May latest.

    Strange story.

  2. Why does our club seem to have the same company’s with Sevco ,the latest is a media mob called Dugout, why in gods name are we allowing the good name of Celtic be tarnished with a bunch of Tax Cheats ,Parks Buses ,and some mob supply them with money ,probably them 2Honk Kong Pheweys ,also I’m hearing that they have tied up a deal with Walkers Crisps ,just shows all the evil and bad people get the breaks ,I would like to see them losing this league, and let’s be honest they have been handed on a plate due to Lawell ,Lennon ,Desmonds incompetence,

  3. I now have an overwhelming urge to drink lager and eat crisps off a plate

I shall be blaming tomorrow’s hangover on CQN

He was very techincally gifted..had a great touch..couldnt get ball of him tbh…Derek Ferguson older brother of Daft Barry was another great player in that era..both fae lanarkshire..Wishaw and Hamilton i think

  5. Had heard of Derek, was down at Man U, played with Gartcosh I think (or maybe Burnbank)

    He’d just come back up

    We played them

    I was directly up against him – he was mince – obviously a one-off ;-) !

Shepherd ran the game when we played Celtic BC. He had a bit of a ding dong with one of our team – hard character fro Garthamlock – sadly no longer with us

Shepherd played for St.Aidans. We played them in a national 5s tournie which was actually on Scotsport.

They beat us due to some shyte reffin.

Think we won the Consolation Shield, having pumped the overall winners in the qualifyin tournie too ;-(

  6. Talking of gifted young players. When I was about 15, I either played with or saw Tony Green, Willie Carr and Alan Bell quite often. Alan Bell was arguably the most promising of the bunch as he was more powerful and `looked` more like a footballer.

Alan, I think, reached the heights of being in StMirren reserves while Tony and Willie represented Scotland.I have some sympathy for scouts trying to decide who will and who will not make it.

I thought Tony Green was a fantastic player.

In Blackpool on holiday I saw the Anglo Italian cup final live on tv from Bologna I think.

Blackpool won the cup and he was outstanding in the game.

  8. Tony Shepherd is watch Commander at Easterhouse Fire Station now

He went up the career ladder fast…….

He was an incredibly skillful player.

Injury led to an early end to his career but when we had weather such as we are currently experiencing, he was on the Pools Panel on TV . I think Gordon Banks was also on but I cannot remember the other two.

    Pavel Dawidowicz is after you.

No-one could say he isn’t a big name signing. 30 quid to get his name on your jersey if it is £3 a letter. He would repay his transfer fee in no time at that rate.

I have just Googled and it would appear I am masively wrong !

Tony, Gordon Banks and Roger Hunt appeared in a `re-make ` much later . Apparently, the original group was composed of : Tom Finney, Tommy Lawton and Ted Drake, former Scotland full-back George Young, former World Cup referee Arthur Ellis, and John Theodore Cuthbert Moore-Brabazon, 1st Baron Brabazon of Tara.

  14. Title subject is so hard to confront for people because its still a taboo subject, by its very nature its hidden and secretive and difficult to police. It often only coming out decades after the event. Today there is a societal awareness and acceptance that this stuff happens and that it destroys lifes. Thankfully there is better education, training and protective measures to reduce risks and to protect children now. We are all a little more enlightened about this subject today and so are able to discuss it I.e Header today. If you have a child you’ll also likely have had the safety talk i.e. appropriate and inappropriate behaviour.

Regards historic abuse, I have no idea how society was meant to tackle something it would not accept exsisted. When it did happen survivers, mothers, siblings and institutions etc. often hide it because of shame, fear, judgement and risk etc. We need to remember a mother does not pick an abuser, she picks a husband, a child does not pick a dad, uncle or coach that much is chance and the BBs, scouts and sports clubs do not employ abusers they employed volunteers, coaches etc some of whom go on to abuse and betrayed the trust placed on them.

Looking back now it’s easy to judge how wrong everyone got it, but our world view is shaped by what we know today not 30, 40 or 50 years ago. What we need to do now and in the future is ensure dont shy away from this subject.

We need to learn from the past mistakes and we need to keep abreast with changing tactics abusers employ to reduce risks to children. As a society we also need to be more aware of the damage we do when using this stuff to point score, or in bad humour as that undermines the survivors (it should be challenged). Otherwise 30, 40 or 50 years from now the same questions will be asked of us and if that happens we have failed.

I have seen the damage caused by abusers and the survivors should be supported and given a voice. We need to hear them and listen to them.

Certainly wouldn’t be getting John Theodore etc on a Celtic top.

Told my youngest if he wanted me to get a name put on his, he could get Ki.

    A fine post.

The more young people are educated on this matter, the more they would be able to spot and reject potential abusers and , in worst case scenarios, the victims would have a greater awareness that they themselves were not in any way to blame.

  17. GARYGILLESPIESHAMSTRING on 12TH FEBRUARY 2021 4:49 PM

Certainly wouldn’t be getting John Theodore etc on a Celtic top.

  21. Let’s open up a new vocabulary for talking about paedophilia to make it impossible for perps, to make it natural for children to protect themselves and unacceptable for adults to point score.

    ……………

I have known about the Derek and Clive stuff since the early/mid 1970’s.

One of the Guys that I worked with back then gave me a Cassette tape…I would sometimes turn the Music OFF at parties about 2am…and stick on the Derek and Clive Tape. It went down very well every time.

“Wee point I was sent on Whatsapp earlier to frame the state we are in, our win against St Mirren was the first against a top 6 team since 29th Sept, let that sink in.”

Not strictly true- we beat Aberdeen on the 1st November in the SC semi

We beat Lille , who are leading the top 6 in Ligue 1, on 10th December

But St. Mirren was our first League win against an SPFL top 6 side since last September

In that time we drew with Aberdeen, lost twice to Sevco, drew twice with Hibs, drew twice with Livi and lost to St. Mirren

    pedantic csc
