Unfathomable collapse from Celtic

1665

Surprised?  Well, yes.  This was a no-contest early-on in Maribor last week.  Even though Celtic didn’t come home with the win, the chances, balance of possession and play, were well in their favour.  A defeat last night was never out of the question, but it was the nature of the defeat that was most concerning.  We were second best in defence, midfield and attack.

Pre-match, Ronny told us he expected Maribor to sit in and counter-attack.  They didn’t, forcing Celtic into disarray.  We were fortunate to go in level at halftime; I was screaming out for a tactical change from 20 minutes in.

Kris Commons proved his value. From the moment he arrived, we had an out-ball for the first time in the night, but it was not enough.

Celtic tried to qualify for the Champions League without a target man, or a striker able to play the kind of football Ronny Deila requires to play his kind of football.  Stokes, Griffiths, Pukki and Balde are not an appropriate Champions League strike force, by some distance.

We have plenty of midfielders who are happy to pass and run but no one with the composure to hold the ball.  Brown, Forrest and Tonev were all missing, but none will occupy the holding roles given to Kayal and Mulgrew last night.  Or to Wanyama two years ago.

The defensive collapse since last season is unfathomable.  Virgil van Dijk was clearly a class above, whether in defence or attack, and Mikal Lustig was also assured – it is perhaps no coincidence that we lost the goal moments after he was replaced, but Efe Ambrose and Emilio Izaguirre have returned from the World Cup in alarmingly poor form.

This is where we are.  We knew this at the end of last season, perhaps Neil Lennon did too.  Ronny Deila has a significant rebuilding job on his hands.

Will we make a significant moves forward this week? This season? The Europa League isn’t the cash-cow of the premier tournament, and it carries none of the glamour, but it is a competition we need to be ready for. Perhaps more importantly, qualification planning for next season’s Champions League starts now.

  1. Eyes Wide Open on

Between last night and this morning I have read plenty of tims commenting that all is not lost, its time to regroup, go back to the drawing board etc

Thats fine, but as long as those same posters realise those comments are simply a coping mechanism which is helping to get them through the eye of the storm when passions are raised the highest.

When the dust settles then reality will bite.

The 2 home games vs Legia and Maribor the players have been like rabbits caught in headlights.

We have no leaders and no warriors.

    We have no real experience.

The above attributes cost money and they are not, to coin Lawwells phrase ‘intellectual purchases’.

We can regroup all we want, but ultimately the same strategy is going to have the same outcome.

The protests need to become larger and more vocal – the voices need to be heard.

Time for a change – from top to bottom, including Lawwell and most of the playing squad.

  2. Efe may not be on top form but he saved us a few times last night. And had he still been at right back I think we would not allowed the cross. Matthews looked like he can’t run. Why bring him on. I know Lustig was injured so had to be replaced. But not with an injured player surely.

As for those who say attendances will drop. If that means all the glory hunting moaning minnies from last night don’t reappear then that’s fine by me.

Supporting Celtic means win, lose or draw. To me anyway.

I would imagine that Maribor and Legia players get paid much less than Celtics. How come they are more effective teams than us.

    Agree with your point.

    To answer your question.

    a)Money doesn`t necessarily buy success.

b)Ronny has been promoted beyond his proven ability.

    Can he turn it round?

    Hopefully.

If you think booing your team after 15 minutes of the game starting, with a crescendo at the half-time whistle, then that’s fine ……. good, at least, that, from your moniker, you agree pur Board have done a “glorious” job with the balance sheet, given the recession, the corrupt (financial) cheating of the zombies and the fact that we are playing in a very minor league / Country, with low revenue streams available etc…

…..and……. I will continue to highlight the bhuns for what they are…..they put Scottish Football in the position we are in just now, and people like you want them back ….God give me strength….

………on a lighter note ….. your moniker tells the true story …. :)

Now, as I said earlier, I will leave the negatonians to vent their anger for a wee while ….. See you at the next home game…….

  5. The defensive collapse since last season is unfathomable. This statement from Paul`s article above baffles me,Efe Ambrose and Emilio Izaguirre defending in last seasons champions league was just as bad as it was last night.Ronny Deila were told is a man with a vision, it is early days yet but it is very worrying the tactical naivety he has shown in these Champion League qualifiers at the moment he looks like a man out of his depths.Even if the players are not good enough it is patently obvious he is not getting the best out of them.He is our manager and it is early days but the board have picked a man of very limited experience,a man whom Iam sure will manage the downsizing of our club without causing too much fuss.Unfortunately I think he will be their fall guy.

Now it didn’t say what period the 25% of Guide Dog owners had had their incident, but lets just say it was a year. That’s 80 collisions.

There are over hundreds of thousands of commuting cyclists in Central London, never mind leisure users. Transport for London estimates over 500k bike trips are made every day in London that’s over 180M/year (taking off some for weekends).

The percentage of cycle journeys resulting in a collision with a guide dog is so small my calculator won’t display the number.

    ——————————————————————-

Ha, how curious that you believe that my irrational and baseless dislike of cyclists can be overcome with mere statistics. You’d have been as well arguing that the article did not mention what colour of shorts the cyclists were wearing.

No doubt the clappers on this site will welcome back their sevco pals to CP.

I mean, that was the plan from the off, wasn’t it Peter.

Downsize to the level of sevco and the bigots will lap it up eh.

DD waxing lyrical about bigots and cheats, PL deliberately sabotaging any chance of a decent team on the park, and with the brass neck to lie without flinching.

There is only so much supporters will take, we are being taken for fools.

Major downsizing on players, but not on PLC salaries and bonuses eh.

The gravy train needs to be stopped in its tracks.

As far as im concerned….there is hunnish influence on the Celtic board.

I refuse to believe any chief executive could be as inept, that’s why it must be a deliberate attempt to play the bigot card.

The PLC reckon the clappers will welcome their sevco pals to CP, however, I think there truly is a battle for the soul of Celtic.

Im not buying their bigot pound strategy, I hope im not alone.

We need to protest, or they will keep playing the bigot card.

Sack this board, before they totally destroy Celtic.

  9. Good morning everyone, feeling down? Angry? Overcome by sheer hopefulness? I was till this morning. My thoughts turn to the people of Gaza, no homes, jobs or infrastructure. Mr and Mrs Foley must be in utter despair. We lost a football match, like we have done in the past and no doubt in the future we will lose again. Perspective .

  10. Is it just me or have Paul67 and others exaggerated how well we played in the maribor away leg

Sure, for the first half an hour we were well on top, but they picked the pace up after that and managed to keep much better possession, albeit we did create a couple of really good chances

But to use phrases like ‘no contest’ and ‘Maribor were thoroughly outplayed at home last week’ wasn’t how i seen the game at all

i would more have described it as a professional european away performance but we werent scintillating by any means

anyway, i do think we should take the europa league quite seriously, it is important that we play as many games against different styles of opposition as possible, it will help the manager and the players

for sunday though, i repeat what i said last night, we should play a 2-1 formation on sunday, with the team being

    gordon

    lustig

    virgil

    mcgregor

and that is it. the rest should be sold by the end of the transfer window

    Good Morning.

Outside the sun is shining and it looks like being a pretty nice day.

It is always good being a Celtic fan on a nice day.

Being a Celtic fan should mean that you head out of the house with a spring in your step, because you feel part of a club – a movement if you will – with which you can identify and take pride in.

I will always take pride in Celtic.

However, being such a fan you hope that in theory and practice those who run the club, who are responsible for its every day function and purpose feel the same pride and passion as I do.

Celtic Football Club is first and foremost a club which just happens to play football and is called Celtic.

The very fact that some protested outside the stadium last night tells you that there are those members of the club, members of the club with the same pride and passion as I have within me, who are not happy with the way the club is being run.

And I think they do have cause for venting their frustration and anger.

Celtic fans know that they do not have any God given right to watch a team win every single game. However, they do have a right perhaps to believe that those who run the club — the business side and the footballing side — will prepare and apply their individual roles with a view to ensuring that Celtic fans see the best players who are reasonably available in the green and white hoops.

As I sit here this morning I have to ask if that task, that ambition, has been achieved by the board and the football management team which stretches from Ronnie Deila back to the physios and the scouts etc.

Is what we saw last night the very best Celtic fans can expect to see?

Last season, I wrote that any summer signings that were made should be made with a view to securing victory in this years champion’s league campaign.

Messrs Balde, Pukki and Boerrigter arrived at a combined cost ( including wages ) of around £10 Million or more — and within a year only one of them is seen as good enough to secure a place on the bench in the biggest game of the club’s season in financial terms.

By placing these players where he placed them last night, the new manager was sending a message to the others in the football department and to the board.

The message is ” You have failed in your task. You have not bought players of first team quality. You have wasted £10 Million and I will not pick them.”

I think Neil Lennon thought similar.

So, again I ask, but this time in terms of policy and thinking for the football club — Is this the best we can expect?

In terms of the football, I would have to say that last year we had a back five which created a record shut out ratio in Scottish Football. With the exception of the goalkeeper, that five were all available to play last night and indeed took to the pitch.

However, for whatever reason, the manager saw fit to change their positions and so completely change the balance that these players deployed successfully over last season.

    Was that wise?

Further, Celtic sat back and handed the ball to Maribor for long periods last night, thus reversing the reputational trend of European nights at Celtic Park. Celtic have played that way before but against the big clubs of Barcelona and Manchester Utd when we attempted to frustrate their style and system and get under their skin causing doubts — and we always had a goal threat and ultimately we prevailed in some great European ties..

Last night we had no goal threat and against a decidedly underdog team, we did not frustrate Maribor at all and only succeeded in filling them with confidence leaving ourselves with a huge task in the event of them scoring which of course they did..

    Was that wise?

Bringing Commons on made a difference, but we did so at the expense of reducing our defensive and tackling midfield down to two. Losing Kayal’s bite meant that Maribor had more room, more time and more control when they came forward which will always lead to the other team making mistakes.

Personally I would have withdrawn Berget for Commons, and moved Charlie Mulgrew left in front of Izzy — but only two in midfield — was that wise?

Celtic can win or lose as a football team — I will still return to support the bhoys with pride and joy.

But the club is a club not just a team and there is a growing feeling that it is very much more of a PLC than a club which in turn distances itself from the ordinary supporter like me.

I love being involved with the charity side of things — I wear my heart on my sleeve when it comes to that, and I have no doubt that Peter Lawell and many others within Celtic Park are fans first and foremost.

However, there is a danger of the club being scrubbed down and made ready each day with disinfectant applied by the rules of the PLC with the result that what you get is a sort of sanitised Celtic — clean, perhaps impersonal, washed and in all truth lacking it’s own personality and familiar feel which is replaced by the sanitised impersonal cleanliness of something that belongs to someone else but which is made available to you for a period of time before being washed down again and passed on to someone else.

That feeling persists — and I ask is allowing that feeling to persist wise?

Is that feeling of impersonal and distant the best we can expect from Celtic in 2014?

We will go into the Europa league but the club and the team needs a shot in the arm.

We need players to make us get out of our seat and football that thrills. We need a sense of common identity, a feeling that the club means something to us all and that we all belong — and the board, and maybe some of the fans, are not doing all that they could or perhaps should, in achieving that.

We should have prepared for Europe from the top down but we haven’t — not in real terms.

We nee to reconnect club, fans, company structure, charity, roots, ethos — and only then will you get the feeling of joy that exists when you really follow Celtic.

We have to back this manager, but in turn he has to show that he has what it takes to move from Norwegian football to managing Celtic in Europe — make no mistake it is a big jump and domestic success alone is no measure, and should not be a measure – of our ambition as a football club given the resources the club has available to it.

However, thus far the manager has persistently played players out of position, has changed tactics from week to week , game to game, and generally has failed to convince both fans, and I suspect players, that he has a system that suits the players available to him. Yet one of the key elements of a manager in any business is to maximise the assets you have and if your assets don’t fit the system you either have to get new assets pronto or change your system to suit the assets you do have.

I am and always will be a Celtic fan, a proud Celtic fan, but at the moment we are not managed well as a club or as a team and some need to face that, accept it and deal with it.

Of course monetary stability is a must, but unlike any other business whose sole purpose is to maximise the return for the shareholders, Celtic PLC should not be like that with its primary objective being to always provide the best football team possible within a sensible financial budget.

That is one goal – the other being to create a great sens of “club” and right now we are doing neither despite some people within the club doing their very best.

However, I would also add that many commentators should be very careful what they wish for.

I have expressed a personal view on here many times that I am extremely wary of the entire PLC structure. That structure, as sold by Fergus McCann, was designed to ensure that no one person could ever take control of the PLC and so the club.

Whatever Mr McCann set out to achieve he did not succeed as the club can be dominated by one person or one group of people in terms of shareholding.

I am aware that many on here do not like nor trust Dermot Desmond. At the same time, I am told from many sources that DD ( despite any soundbites re other teams ) is a deeply committed Celtic fan. I have never met him, do not know him and have never spoken to him.

However, any man or woman who has amassed a £1.8 Billion fortune is a trader, a capitalist, a free marketeer and in business terms as tough as nails..

I sincerely hope that DD is sufficiently interested enough in Celtic to share my hopes and ambitions for my club and that he does not see the club as any kind of business venture. When he does decide to move his shareholding on ( and no one can force him to do that ) I hope he acts as a fan and acts wisely in deciding where his shareholding should go because all the blocks are in place for the controlling interest in Celtic to be passed on to any kind of city spiv you care to imagine be they Arab Sheiks, pin stripped city con men, fast buck freddies like Mike Ashley, or genuine Celtic fans with money.

That has always been my biggest fear and my biggest gripe regarding Celtic PLC and if there is a serious disconnect between the fans and the PLC with the result that there is a major shift in the shareholding the consequences could be far worse than anything seen or imagined so far.

I am a Celtic fan. I always will be but the club and those involved in it and with it have to look at themselves and their fellow fans and recognise that some things have to change in key areas and aspects.

And they have to change for the good of Celtic

NL getting unfair flack IMHO! My view is NL left because every time he requested a particular type of player he got a cheap imitation. Pukki is an example. It was clearly a plan E and Lenny was not impressed. Ultimately our manager has little say. RD started out saying he didn’t want loanees. He got players on loan. Why have we taken the lad from MC if he will only be here for a year?

to accept offers for key players, so that we might

maximise our chances of playing success, was a good

    one in hindsight”

What did we learn from that then Ian? Common sense, business sense, financial sense says stick with the proven successful strategy.

    Maybe this statement from Peter Lawell in the same report clears up the mystery;

“The investment in our Lennoxtown training facility

continues to yield benefits, helping to ensure that players

are recruited, developed and sold in the most efficient

    and cost effective way possible”

In any business, you should be measured on how you perform against the corporate objectives. It’s no different for PL than it is for you or I. You are given a set of objectives and you deploy the resources available as efficiently as possible, invest to achieve efficiency improvement and maximise profit.

To that end, I suppose you have to say that with regard to “to ensure that players

are recruited, developed and sold in the most efficient

    and cost effective way possible”…..

….that Peter is doing an absolutely wonderful job.

For those looking to see the bank balance get even bigger, stand by your man.

Problem is Peter, when your customer base starts to dwindle, so does income and any hope of European participation is ever decreasing in tandem, till eventually you find your new level, which in our case will be the transformation from an unbeatable home side in the CL, to also rans in the Europa League.

As for the manager, I have thought since day 1 of his appointment we might have landed a gem. After a few weeks, I have lost faith. Why so early? Simply because although I appreciate he inherited a pile of manure, his additions married to the deplorable tactics, selections and substitutions have turned aforementioned pile of manure into a steaming great pile of horseshite.

Dejected does not come anywhere near describing my feelings. Well done to the bhoys who tried to cheer us over the line last night, but I am afraid by 60 minutes in, I was left hoping for EL football. The thought of crushing , humiliating defeats all over Europe this season did not fill me with joy.

Humblings in the EL will be easier, only just, to stomach.

  26. Paul

    You headline your article

    ‘Unfathomable collapse from Celtic’

And the go on to illustrate why it was not unfathomable.

Added to your own explanations is that last night was, what is becoming an all too common cup tie scenario for Celtic.

Faced with an even supposed inferior opposition that is technically adequate, moderately physical, reasonably well organised and driven by the greater desire Celtic possess no answers.

In the general scheme of things, although those at the top would rather not acknowledge it, Celtic is a club in deep trouble.

It faces a long meaningless season where gates will diminish and for the fans who remain faithful, there is not even the consolation of possessing a single player who alone is worth the admission money.

Off the field, an absent landlord, an anonymous chairman and increasingly mistrusted CEO contributes to a lack of leadership of the quality required to even remotely connect with the fans .

  27. NEILMCCALLUMLENNON on

I haven’t read any comments yet and I normally have a day or two off when a result like last nights happens. Also I’m normally a happy clapper and understand the new manager needs time but my annoyance is at the complete apathy and embarrassing performance of those players. I watched the game last week and they played with confidence and look dangerous everytime they attacked. Fast forward a week and they looked like a team who had never played together. Words can describe how I have felt all day, absolutely gutted.

  28. And Paul what is the reason we have not invested in a goal scorer??

Do you think the fans should unite and force Lawwell out?

  29. Beamishismypint on

The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over and expect different results?

Ultimately however much the fan base grumbles about zero signings and a rookie manager, the suits will ignore us as they have done over an extended period. No point fighting on here as it seems to matter not even a little.

What would be appropriate and fair would be for Peter Lawwell to call a press conference and explain his strategy and take responsibility for getting it wrong.

Unfortunately he will not do that.

A fortnight ago I asked Paul to get Lawell on here.

    Still waiting

    Beware the trolls….!!

  32. In a game like that every little advantage must be utilised.

No Green Brigade was a shot in our own foot.

Their constant organised singing and chanting would have helped drown out the negative moaning groaning boo-bhoys.

The crowd only really came to full life after a few Maribor nutters started fighting.

There was 50% less atmosphere without the GB.

  33. Beamishismypint on

Right now I couldn’t care less who ibrox belongs to, my club is a shambles and that’s what worries me not some delusional all curing warmth from the demise of that shower.

  34. When disaster strikes it is normally not one thing that causes it.

It is normally several factors that combine.

That is where Celtic are at.

A lack of adequate investment in the playing staff prior to CL qualification matches.

Short sighted forward planning of the playing squad.

Squads should be assembled well in advance of these matches.

Our best players being continually sold.

Erratic scouting ,in some cases downright shambolic scouting.

    Wasting millions of pounds.

    Poorer cheap option players.

    Poorer cheap option management staff.

A far from perfect Moneyball business plan.

Staying solvent and having a team that can compete in the CL do not need to impossible to achieve.

Yes ,we are where we are ,but we didn’t need to be here.

From Barca to this in 2 years.

    Soul destroying.

    Whoever scouted Balde,Pukki,Boeritger,Bangura, needs sacked.

I will be at Dundee on Sunday shouting on my team.

We are where we are indeed.

He`s in the heat of battle. Not in the boardroom.

Sure,P.L., to the extent that he was involved in the hiring of Ronny, must take some of the blame.

How `bout the rest of the Board members? Why the fixation with P.L.?
