We need to hear from Crawford Allen

136

We don’t have a dog in the fight over refereeing standards at last night’s League Cup game at Ibrox.  Livingston and even the perennial Ibrox media holdouts were aghast at a decision which led to the opening goal and subsequent VAR approval.

However, we remain the only club who SFA Head of Refereeing, Crawford Allan, felt it appropriate to pick-on for a decision by one of his officials he felt was wrong.  Some context.  In December 2021 Kyogo scored the only goal of a league game against Hearts.  After a rocky start to the season, where the club had won only one from their opening seven games, Celtic collected 25 from 27 points up to that night.

They were on form and closing in on the top of the table, the whole country could sense it and an assistant referee did not raise his flag when Kyogo scored.  Allan could contain himself no more and took to Radio Scotland to express his suspicion that Celtic were advantaged.  He didn’t say it that way, of course, but by saying he thought the assistant was wrong, that was the implication.

His intervention was ill-judged.  Referees get a hard enough time without their own boss taking to the airwaves to undermine them.  This was true then and remains so now.  That the SFA Head of Refereeing didn’t see anything wrong with his actions gave us an insight into how his mind reacted to that Celtic Park moment.  Football takes hold of us all.

We need to hear again from Crawford.  He either should explain his view on decisions favouring other clubs, which would be even-handed but an horrendous mistake, or he need to explain how inappropriate it is that he only spoke about Celtic.

When trying to raise standards in an organisation, it is practically impossible to achieve progress if your own missteps are brushed under the carpet.  The SFA has been a hiding place for bowling club committee-types for decades.  Our game just doesn’t have the competence to attract those with the ability to succeed in a more responsible environment.

  1. In any line of business, if a contractor continually balls it up, you are within your rights to issue a warning. If mistakes continue thereafter, you are within your rights to terminate said contract. In the best interests of Scoddish Fitba’, terminate the contract with these “cowboys” and get in new refs from anywhere bar Scotland/NornIron

I believe that is the direction of travel for our Board , witness the VAR chopped off goal when we played at their dump a few weeks back , cast your mind back to the ridiculous sending offs we had at their dump over the years , Tosh , Thommo , Lenny , and the blatant cheating by McCurry , Dougal , Thomson , Clark

  3. Deniabhoy –

    regarding –

    The league cups.

    From Celtic website.

Old Jim Mooney used to bang on that one of Steins failings was in sacrificing success in the league cups to progress in European rounds or indeed valuing two points in the league as more importatn. He could give me exact line ups and rage some about who should have played, if we get to the final we should have the strongest teams playing, and that saving players for other games devalued the final, you get there you win the bloody thing.

He said sometimes he felt we gifted the huns a trophy, we didnt care about trebles, but if they won a league cup early in season then they really did.

I would say surely the players would be up for it anyways no matter who played, but he would counter, if the manager stopped caring as much maybe so to did the players

That record of 14 finals in a row –

A defeat to huns in 64/65

We win in 65/66 , in early october 65, and having won the scottish in april, many believe beating the huns is the catalyst for a belief in themselves to go on win a league and then all that followed.

That win the first of 5 in a row beating Original Rangers in the first two, then Dundee, Hibs and Saint Johnstone up till 69/70, allowing our second treble in 69. A team old Jim would argue were even better than the lions.

    Then the downfall.

Beaten by Rangers, Partick Hibs , Dundee, 71 to 74, the period Jim would say, we lost the significence of it, as the lions left one by one, and the Quality street gang came in, yes they were quality, but maybe europe and continuing past the 6 in a row matching acheivement, we just valued them more. He said also, look at the fall off in the crowds , often half of the previous matching finals –

Ironically as we go for ten in a row, we win the league cup in 74/75 beating Hibs 6-3, so it could set up a treble, Billy last season and we do the cup double, but fail miserably in the league

77 the double returns, but another losing streak in finals awaits, we lose to Rangers , Rangers, Aberdeen and Rangers. The 14 finals in a row ends, and a worse barren period awaits where we cannot even get to finals anymore , the emergence of United and Aberdeen curtails us, but the huns get the knack again of winning the league cup.

Between 79 and 98 – 19 finals we appeared in only 4, 3 losses to huns one to raith.

At that point i truelly believed we were cursed to never win the bloody thing again

I get to see my first winning cup final in 82/83, I didnt see us win it again until 98, ironically at the edwardian toilet block, only our 10th win overall, the huns had racked up 20 the previous season.

    Since then –

another 11 trophies for us, but still we contrive to lose a final to Killie.

the last 6 wins in 7 seasons, winning it is better than not,

this season needs to be absr win.

  4. The meeja management line pre the huns game was that Beale had to “win” the Cup……”had to”……

……………the boul’ “wullie” would have been under no illusion how vital a hun win woulda been………………

It just take enough influence to throw a game .

If…IF….Livi had scored would the roof have caved in at The Toilet Block…probably.

    Fix fitba; empty Hampden.

    HH Celtic Quick News.

  5. He is one defeat away from his jotters.

They have turned on him big style, even a 4-0 win was met with still not what we want to see.

Kenny Misser summed up the hun mentality, if he cannot beat Celtic in a meaniful game, then doesnt matter what else he does.

Winning a cup is just postponing the inevatuable.

  6. As a long time lurker, I haven’t posted for a few years but my son has asked me if there are any supporters buses coming up from England next Wednesday’s game. He’s doing his training in Sheffield but I’m sure

if any he will be only too happy to travel up with you.

Let me know asap if seats are available

    Thanks

  7. Bada

She’s back running the foodbank tonight – but under instructions no lifting – sitting down doing the admin.

    Got to love her 🥰

  8. ” it’s now more than 4 years since they conceded a penalty in a league match at Ibrox, and 22 months (61 matches) since they conceded a penalty in any league game.”

How do we promote that as much as possible? We know the MSSM won`t.

PS Obviously the stats refer to Sevco !!!

  9. St Stivs – thanks for the post / response in LC. Jock’s stance became the norm in England where the top teams were putting out youths and reserves to save their better players for the league and Europe. Wenger called it a “non-trophy”.

Think the FA threatened to fine clubs for not playing their strongest teams?

  10. Hot Smoked,

That “tackle” by Weir is way beyond a stonewaller; mind you, so were the others. I think (as someone said earlier) that it may not be simply cheating so much as fear that the MIBs will be risking life and limb from the deid team’s follow followers, if they ref properly.

  11. When next the opportunity arises, Celtic should issue a release asking for clarification of when the head of refereeing will and will not become involved in on field decisions

We simply must hold them to account

    Silence achieves nothing

  12. My first time witnessing the blatant cheating in their favour was when my dad took me to Ibrox in the mid 70’s( Joe Craig game ) ..I watched in astonishment when the ref overturned a penalty for Celtic after Greig broke Bobby Lennox’s leg …my dads comment ..it’s always Been like this ..some things and attitudes never change 🤔

  13. Hot Smoked @ 12:29

Sorry for taking so long to come back.

Yes the sequence without a penalty given is certainly a strange one – however I do think, like Collum last night, some refs don’t like giving contentious decisions at Ibrox – that’s individual cowardice on the spot, not conspiracy in my book.

Maybe Willie and VAR were thinking about the Lagerbielke incident in roughly the same area of the pitch and the furore over the Roofe no goal a couple of weeks ago.

There are decisions that ‘get up our nose’, however organised conspiracy against us? I say no …..and the facts of our success back it up.

I agree with Paul 67 in calling out Crawford Allan, however such was the ridicule and distain he has been subjected to since that Hearts intervention, I doubt he will do it again. HH

  14. CARPE DIEM 63 on 28TH SEPTEMBER 2023 6:33 PM,

I was at that game, right down at the corner flag. The linesman flagged for offside against Bobby and, he was well off. But, that didn’t stop that bassa Greig, who must have seen the offside flag, from clattering into Bobby.

    He was an animal 🤬

  15. Gene @ 7:11

I think Collum had a much better view than VAR and the VAR operator therefore did not consider it a clear and obvious error……by the way, I am still gobsmacked that we came out on the ‘right-side’ of the Roofe ‘goal’ a few weeks ago – for me, at the time, it was a momentous decision for us.

  16. Cloud9

From the replays I saw on every angle it was a clear FK – it says a lot when we’re surprised we get the right decision

  19. See the Villa women are complaining about the quality of their Castore strips. As they hold the sweat and look like a second skin.

Newcastle have just ended their partnership early due to the poor quality of the kit and not one article has mentioned that Mike Ashley is now in charge of Castore.

The Huns really know how to pick them! 😂😂😂

  20. We can’t ignore the role of the BBC in the Crawford Allen affair. They were the ones who invited him on, although obviously he could have refused. They were the ones who spoke about that Kyogo goal for days on end. Have they ever invited him on again?

I’m sure castore is still owned by the brothers who started it with Andy Murray one of the shareholders

  24. Gene…pretty sure Mike Ashley still has his mitts in Castore, ergo Huns ;-)) Happy to b proven wrong

  25. As far as know, the brothers who started Castore’,sold the company

It would have been very strange of Ashley to advertise Castore, all around St James, before he sold up,if not involved.

  26. Turkeybhoy…our game against them is nearly a month away…not sure how they can be judged based on performances in the here and now.
