We spoil the league

782

Illustrating the very high regard the business community and people of Barcelona hold Celtic fans, one of the city’s top restaurants, Cinc Sentis have donated lunch for two towards our annual charity causes.

I am assured by our resident food critic (WDH), Cinc Sentis is a fabulous dining experience.  The auction has just gone live – so get a low bid in early – and ends Sunday.  If you’re heading to Barcelona next week, or anytime thereafter, get your eBay bid in here.

Many thanks to Cinc Sentis and WDH.

Read lots yesterday about the vast majority of people in Scotland missing the ‘Old Firm’ games.  Trying hard to inoculate myself against any “bravado” I really don’t see this.  The edge we used to feel when going into the final minutes of a game needing a goal is no longer there, but I’m really not sure that edge is healthy or necessary.

More than this, I don’t know a single fan from another Premiership club who regrets the liquidation of Rangers, or feels their life is enhanced by the presence of Celtic.  Everyone is aware of the harsh reality – we spoil the league.

We do, of course, sell copy, as did the liquidated lot.

    A Glasgow uni ‘bhoy’?

    Yet you’re a cross dresser?

    Why am I not surprised?

At least you got in. In my time there was much argy bargy about ‘reciprocity’ between us and your mob about access to the unions. We let you in but you didn’t return the favour.

I remember a when we all went to the QMU instead of the Beer Bar over by, on a point of principle. Of course, it didn’t hurt that the Ramones were playing that night.

One of the only two times I ever got into the Union at Glasgow I listened in to some hairies arguing over a board game that seemed to consume them called Kingmaker. We then went to watch the ‘ Freds’ (cartoons) which made a lot more sense.

Nothing like a good bit of politics– especially round a pub table– to prick the conscience.

Old Tim enjoy Barcelona– Great City and check out the http://juanmanandhisdug.wordpress.com/ blog pages for some good info.

If you are looking for a wee snifter or two, The Bar Obama on the Grand Via towards the top of the Ramblas is always good value– you won’t be able to miss it.

There are also some good Irish Pubs down just off the Ramblas as well including one from the Flaherty’s chain of Seville fame.

There is a fair guide to them here http://suitelife.com/2012/02/02/top-5-irish-pubs-barcelona/ and of these my own favourite is the Temple Bar.

I’m not the best at booking holidays,I like a wee dram now and again and I booked the hotel when we played Barcelona last year, must have been the only hotel in all of Spain that was alcohol free. I blame it on BT. I think this is my sixth time in Barcelona, and enjoy it every time. I enjoy it every time I go there.

Glad to say the Hotel I’m staying at this time has a bar, whoopee.

  14. Re all the talk about great bands who played at Strathclyde

I saw many good and some not so good, but the best of the lot was the Ruts around 1980.

I was still at school but managed to blag my way in & by happy coincidence they are on in Edinburgh this weekend having reinvented themselves several times, but now as Ruts DC.

Saw them in Glasgow about 8 weeks ago & they were superb, with the brilliant musicianship from guys who make more cash these days as session players for amongst others Dexy’s.

The other standout Strathclyde concert was Thomas Dolby, when having spent a few hours in one of the lower level bars, the steps up to level 8, were a journey too far.

Have just read your post regarding Annie Borjesson. I live close to the spot where she was found. During the summer, I met an investigative journalist who was involved in her case and I was able to tell him that flowers and candles would appear on the prom in her memory. I asked him to let her parents know that she was being remembered. Tomorrow, I shall go to the beach and leave a candle for her.

If I ever fly from Prestwick or run friends/family members to the airport I leave a bunch of flowers along past the yacht club between the two benches. That is where there was a memorial service organised by Guje some years ago.

The local CoS minister was very good with Guje and the stories she will take home are not all negative, but the authorities didn’t go out of their way to help and in fact treated her in a dismissive way.

I don’t pretend to have any idea how Annie died but I know her death was not investigated in any way shape or form that was acceptable to her loved ones and that is simply unforgivable. I saw some of this in the parliament as well.

  24. Ryecatcher,

I was at that one too.

Used to go to see bands all the time, as even at today’s rates you could watch a name band for the equivalent of £10/£15,

Such a shame it is so expensive now.

In those days you could take a chance on a band, for the equivalent cost of two or three pints.

These days it is £20 minimum and often much more, so I am less inclined to speculate on a band unless I have heard lots of there stuff.

In saying that, The Valves are playing in a couple of weeks, and I recall seeing them as the 3rd band on the bill at the Apollo in late 80s, it may even have been supporting the Clash, but I can’t remember

  27. Was interested in buying a new HTC One Mini mobile, but, apparently, as of tomorrow, they are being withdrawn from sale due to losing a court case brought by Nokia. Nokia claim that HTC used some of their chips/technology without their permission.

Hoping for a good deal tomorrow.

Oh, it only applies to the “mini”, because HTC launched it after the papers were served!
