When and how football lockdown lifts

334

I had a conversation yesterday about what the world will be like when lockdown is lifted.  We agreed it will not be lifted all at once.  Small private gatherings will be permitted first, then restaurants, cinemas and eventually bars.  The last thing to be released from lockdown will be football stadiums.

When you consider how football fans shout, sing and embrace, normal attendance at games will not be possible while the virus exists and large parts of the population remain in mortal danger.  Thousands of spectators cross-contaminating will not be allowed to happen until the virus is eradicated or a vaccine is distributed.  This could take years.

Around 90% of the football industry across Europe may go out of business before selling another match ticket.  Scotland would be left with Celtic and the community clubs, who can furlough every member of staff, get a grant for the rates and rent out their pitch to youth teams to pay insurance and utility bills.

This is just one small unthinkable thing in a seemingly imperious industry that is very thinkable in 2020.  Similar consequences will be replicated in other industries across the world.  If football wants to survive, it has to get innovative very quickly.

Facemasks, visors, gloves, a shedload of new rules on behaviour permitted at a football ground, alcohol gel dispensers everywhere and cashless kiosks are all things clubs should be planning for.  It would be a mistake to assume the game we are familiar with will return at any point in the next year.  Your football stadium experience will either be very different, or it will not happen for a long time.

  1. Thanks Paul 67………….an interesting insight into an uncertain future……….

The thought has often occurred to me that we are so lucky

to have This Dear Green Place, where Tims can congregate in the safety of Virtual Distancing.

Most of the contributions here are top notch and keeps the blog the Go To venue for Celtica.

There are of-course those characters whose views seem out of place and then there are the trolls – wait long enough and their real character betrays them and they are fun ooot…… an’ flung oooot!

  9. I flew into Jakarta 25th February to be met with , sanitizer and temperature recorded. Filled in form with flight details including seat number also address in Indonesia along with phone number. Keep info for 2weeks any problems contact authorities. This was approximately 3weeks before UK acted.

Meanwhile Trumpet and Strumpet running about USA and UK shaking hands and blaming someone/ anyone else for the problem.

I sincerely hope that all people suffering from this virus make a recovery although I realise that is not the way it will work out. Please take care everyone,as for Mr Boris Johnson who imho is a buffoon makes a full recovery and a Damascus revelation and can convince his colleagues that the NHS does indeed need the 350 million that his cronies promised in their election manifesto

  13. If the scenario as outlined comes to pass, how do we survive for a year with no season ticket renewals ?

  14. fairhill bhoy on

WHITEDOGHUNCH-sorry buddy I haven’t explained that well at all.

Go to YouTube and put in-Celtic-That was the team that was 1987-1988.

I was there in the jungle that day as well.Great day, great season 🍀👍

“Scotland would be left with Celtic and the community clubs”

    ———-

And of course, Rangers. Under our current custodians, no Rangers = no old firm = no Celtic, so that’s pretty unlikely.

  18. If the SPFL vote to hand end as is in the championship and other leagues then we’ve liquidated null and void. It’s a good day.

I’m happy to wait to see if we can get this finished on the pitch. I suspect there’s a lot of disappointed Sevco fans today that were hoping to see us crowned as champions as they could then start the asterix pish.

  19. We are missing our football especially the Celtic football club. Puting staff on furlough to help with costs durring this difficult time and well paid played taking pay cuts or deferment. What is the football authorities doing to help our local clubs, with no great resources,in the lower divisions. Is there any hope that our Junior League teams can survive this catastrophe or are they all going the same way as Rangers 2012.

Has anyone given a thought for the for the future of these community teams

We’re will Jobo be without EK to support when we are away from Paradise.

I heard the official news about HMRC refusing the cva just outside Chesters at Skelwith Bridge so it has special memories for me! Also spent my 50th birthday down there a couple of years ago

  22. Bankiebhoy1 makes a pertinent point. What is essential about digging up a football pitch ?

AD- null and void isn’t an option, Maxwell said there would be no tv or prize money, and ST Holders could sue clubs.

  25. Maybe the Huns are digging up the Ibrox pitch in a last ditch desperate attempt to recover One Eyed Willie’s long lost buried treasure…
