When media collaborate with power you have problems

1190

A journalist, banned by Celtic, attacked the club in the Daily Record today, suggesting the SFA chief exec Stuart Regan should have told Peter Lawwell to ‘wind his neck in’ and ‘remind him of his duty to the game’ after he wrote asking for clarification after Sunday’s game.

The hyperbole was raised to the extent the notion “Lawwell dragged our game back into a very dark place – somewhere dangerously close to disrepute” was put into hundreds of thousands of hands today.

A dark place, close to disrepute?  For writing a letter asking for clarification? Sounds to me like the know the trouble Peter Lawwell is causing to the vested interests at Hampden and they want him stopped.

By remarkable coincidence, this happens to be the same journo who wrote the puff piece for SFA president, Campbell ‘What school did you go to?’ Ogilvie for writing to Uefa demanding a referee was demoted (while circumventing due process) and asking for a player to be banned.

No mention of winding a neck in or duty to the game for a vastly farther reaching letter.

The same paper gives a platform to Barry ‘EBT’ Ferguson to level wholly inaccurate accusations against Celtic:

“By questioning the reasoning behind [the failure to award a penalty]in the name of their supporters, they were nodding towards all manner of hoary old conspiracy theories.”

Conspiracy you say, Barry?  Who mentioned conspiracy?  An explanation that the standard of refereeing is not good enough and that having 6 officials at Hampden hindered good decision making didn’t occur to you?

Some people are quick to deny conspiracies when a far less controversial response is available.

A concerted campaign has run for days now to ensure that Celtic cannot ask questions without being demonised.  When the media demonise those who question authority we are in a very dark place indeed.

This is intolerable.  It would not happen in England, where the breadth of media is wide enough to escape narrow seams of authority.  It doesn’t matter if it is the government, the Church, the police, big business or sport, if media collaborate with power, you have problems.

Some of it comes from people perhaps bitter that Celtic called them out and banned them, some from those unable to find perspective or consistency between writing about a Campbell Ogilvie letter and a Peter Lawwell letter.  All of them are time-served opinion formers who make money from Celtic’s actions.

We are the last superpower in the game, survivors in the battle of the ages.  This antagonism isn’t going away.  Not until their grandchildren are in place, anyway.

Clubs need to write letters when improvement is needed.  I hear estimates that income to Celtic from winning the Scottish Cup would have been in the region of £1m.  Football is big business and processes and resources need to as good as they possibly can be. If they are not, the very least you can do is ask for improvement.

On Meekings appeal yesterday….

The player’s appeal was right to be upheld, the case should never have been put before the SFA panel in the first place.  The referee Steven McLean saw the incident.  That was not disputed.  He asked his assistant for his opinion.  That was not disputed either.

Meekings representatives pointed out at the hearing that officials are not allowed to re-referee a game after watching TV.  This is a central tenant of the game and was accepted by the judicial panel.

Retrospective action is only allowed for incidents which referees did not see.  It is not permitted for referees to reconsider an incident he saw.  It is blindingly embarrassing to our game that the SFA didn’t know the rules well enough before taking this action.  I hear there was incredulity at Celtic when they heard Meekings was banned in the first place.

…… and you wonder why Celtic write letters.

Last call for the Ben Nevis Huddle……..

You’re right, I thought Paul Lambert got sent off but it’s must be an urban myth. According to Lambert when he was not eating through a straw…

“That Lambert can talk about the Old Firm, let alone play, is thanks only to the progress of dental surgery and a bank balance that allowed him to go private rather than wait on the NHS.

Eight weeks ago he was stretchered off unconscious at Ibrox with severe facial damage after Jorg Albertz’s knee crashed into his jaw. If the pain which followed was bad, it was minimal compared to the realisation that Celtic had paid through the nose for an incident in which Lambert had been the victim.

Lambert’s tackle on Albertz turned the game. The penalty which was awarded allowed Rangers to draw level at 2-2 in first-half injury time, though television later proved Albertz dived in anticipation of Lambert’s sliding challenge.

“I lost four teeth,” Lambert says, pointing to the new bridgework. “People keep saying I made a reckless tackle, but I must be the first guy in the history of football to bring down an opponent with my jaw – that was the only point of contact.”

What happened afterwards left a sour taste in Lambert’s damaged mouth. Albertz is absolved of blame by the Celtic player, but not Rangers’ manager. “I’m told that that Dick Advocaat was in the referee’s room during the interval demanding I should have been given a red card for giving away the penalty.

I was out cold on the stretcher in the dressing room, waiting for the ambulance, and he’s trying to get me sent off. I don’t have a problem with Jorg, he saw a situation and played for the penalty. He also apologised to me.

“But what Advocaat did still disappoints me. It is not professionalism, because my injury could have been much worse for all he knew.

“I cannot remember a thing about the game, not even the two goals we scored. I blacked out totally, although I have watched the tackle on video since.”

Celtic took almost as long to recover as Lambert. Without their defensive midfielder – who was not permitted to play for a month, which is mandatory for all head injuries – they slumped to five defeats in eight games. It is no coincidence that his return three games ago was followed by a surge in confidence which brought 14 goals in those matches.

  6. FourGreenFields 18:15 on 24 April, 2015

From a BBC report at the time

Referee Kenny Clark waited a full 35 minutes before issuing the first yellow card, to Lambert for a late challenge on Amoruso.

With the Celtic defending becoming increasingly desperate, Albertz showed all his experience when he pushed the ball dangerously into the box and simply waited for the challenge.

It came from Lambert, who flew in at full stretch – conceding the penalty and a facial injury which saw him stretchered from the field to be replaced by Johan Mjallby.

    ……………………………….

Time and alcohol have dimmed the mind then. I had a clear recollection of Dallas as the ref, but it seems I have conflated two games against a deid team where the referee was a joke. Crazy notion I know.

The account from the BBC is mince though, according to my now newly identifiably dodgy recollection.

My account has Lambert and whoever coming together and the other guy falling on Lambert and knocking his mouth sideways. replays showed that Lambert made no unlawful contact with the other player.

That the BBC wrote it thus is another indictment of their ill-informed punditry.

I hope you are well.I meant to say I apologise if this has been mentioned before.

Thanks for pointing out that I had posted basically the same post twice.

The reason for this was Greensideup-gbwo mentioned that we need the rest of the fans groups to get involved as we are always painted as the bad guys or the complainers.

I was only posting to Greensideup to reply to his post as he might not have seen my earlier post.I frequently come on here and see posts getting repeated.it is because all people on here do not read back all the posts.Take care Livibhoy, also these “people will never get to me” I am too old in the head.Sorry for long post.Take care my friend HH.

The way I see it is we need the rest of the fans groups to get involved as we are always painted as the bad guys or the complainers, paranoid etc. this is largely helped by the rags. If it is a broader based effort it will carry more wait and they cannot just target us like they are doing right now, enjoy your holiday

  19. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

The SFA could have got this all sorted on Monday as they could have done the Monday after the Dougie Dougie game by telling the truth.

I can still hear Dallas the elder churning out lie after lie the Monday after the game at Tannadice. He would have known the truth a few hours after the game had finished but instead his statement made matters worse.

That was the time Dallas and his crew should have been run out of town.

Someone posted last night, Dallas the younger reffed last Saturday, was one of the match officials last Sunday and was the ref at the Hibs Livi game om Tuesday. He must have earned over £1500 for those games. Nice rewards for being the son of the unofficial leader of our refs. I wonder how more experienced officials feel about that.

It may be coincidence but since Dallas the elder has been involved with uefa refs, we see seem to have been given some real clowns in our european games. I may be talking mince however.
