Why Celtic need to take their portion of Anderson’s money

424

I’ve given Ann Budge appropriate levels of criticism this year but credit where it is due, she managed to get the ‘exclusive’ that James Anderson was a potential benefactor in waiting for Scottish football.  Anyone who comes up with £2m for the game is entitled to break the news in whatever way they choose.

Unlike Budge, Anderson clearly understands how important it is to cultivate support in arenas you want to influence.  He is now perfectly placed to do just that.  Hearts fans can only wonder how their club’s fortunes would differ if he, not Budge, fronted their financial rescue.

£50k per club is generous and welcome at every one of the 42 clubs.  It is easy to suggest Celtic should take the high ground and leave their portion in the pot, but that suggestion looks different if you dig into the grubby details.

Right now Celtic’s reserves are reducing by millions each month.  We don’t want to, and are unlikely to, sell anyone of value this year, pay cuts have happened – and not just for top executives.  That £50k might keep a couple of people in jobs.  Alternatively, if it is put to altruistic use, it should top up the support the club gives to the Foundation.

There are times to be generous to smaller clubs, but it is ludicrous to suggest that the extra £1219 they would earn if Celtic declined their portion would make any material difference.  It is a stupid idea, counterproductive and of value only as a vacant gesture.

We need to get ready for 10-in-a-row and Champions League qualification.  The Foundation needs to continue its work with the most needy in our community and beyond – and we still need to sell season tickets.  There is not enough money to do everything we will want to do in our own back yard.

    BSR,

I found you logic to HT very convoluted and inconsistent, apparently you hold sevco as the benchmark as they are the only other club you mention.

You raise the ticket office staff as furloughed which if electronic refunding was implemented would be a minor issue.

The online process is very easy for the Plc but not for all those requesting a refund whom you obviously dismiss.

You then refer to refunds a “windfall type payment” dismissing the idea that small numbers of supporters every season request refunds, this is I suspect, the system used, and complaints have been made about how hard it is to request a refund, we’ve seen them on here. You later use this idea that one off type of repayment as an excuse as to why it can be done electronically.

You then demonstrate the Plcs required procedure of processing and filling out cheques as if they had no other choice, when we know the whole lot could have been done electronically and automatically without the risk to supporters or staff. You can be sure the cheques will not have our CEO’s or any other senior staff signatures on it because that part will be done automatically.

The strategy to make season ticket refunds more difficult as a company policy is the reason it remains more difficult, not because away games are one off games, all the away games tickets are distributed on the away game scheme, another little money making scheme. Like the season ticket the majority are deducted from accounts electronically.

You then go on to focus on those who want the refunds and Your interpretation of the reasoning for changing their minds, dismissing the idea that increased complexity is unfair and no reason for supporters to be annoyed at this. HT clearly stated he was doing this because he found the imposition and increased risk to supporter to be unfair and took this as the most effective way to demonstrate his feelings.

You finish off with your final dig at fans having to make a decision that causes them anxiety as if it is their fault when it is the Plcs strategy to cause this anxiety, in the hope people will not reclaim what is rightfully theirs.

Then double down on the bullcrap that the process is not more complex.

More than a club but nothing more than a business eh.

Agreed the staff have the greatest risk, they must be what the board consider expendable family members, eh.

Ten minutes later hail stones, loads belting off the conservatory roof. She returns soaked, speechless…….😱sunny noooow🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻

`I suspect the dilemma of asking , or not asking for a refund is what really bothers some fans, not the fact that there is a simple protocol to be followed to get the money back.`

    I suspect you are correct.

I also suspect that Celtic could have made it simpler. That does NOT mean that it is difficult as it stands but it does mean that it could have been easier.

Was this a deliberate choice by Celtic? Who knows.

  12. TIMALOY29 on 5TH JUNE 2020 1:33 PM

So, according to yesterday’s report in The Athletic, Celtic has decided to pursue long-term targets who have been watched in person. So who are Celtic pursuing for LW?

Moi Elyounoussi is the obvious primary target.

Who else? As I can remember:

Niclas Eliasson (in the final year of his deal at Bristol City)

    Jordan Ibe (free agent)

    Gyrano Kerk of Utrecht

Other guys who have been linked but probably don’t meet the profile:

Michael Olise – youth player at Reading

Thomas Robert – Montpellier youth player and son of Lauren Robert

Rodrigo Riquelme – Athletico Madrid youth player. Generally plays on the right but has played on the left and as a number 10.

    Any I’ve missed?

    —————————————————————————————————————————————————

By n large, that is a decent short-list.

Something tells me Elyounoussi won’t be back next season. I am more hopeful on Forster. But Moi, not so confident.

Jordan Ibe would be a No from me. He’s earned too much too young. It has distorted his application and attitude towards his profession.

Gyrano Kerk, and / or Rodrigo Riquelme would be worth a shout.

I don’t really know too much about the other names mentioned.

  13. my tuppence worth on the refund.

    1. Celtic have not offered a refund directly to ST holders. They put it in a News item on 18 May on the website which had no mention of refunds in the title. There was no email to ST holders. That News item takes about 5 minutes to find when trawling the website; assuming someone told you it existed. The link in the News item take you to a form only. There is no Refund section on the website. This is all deliberate in my view

    2. Celtic are very poor in my experience at dealing with transactions that are not straightforward and variable in performance on those that are straightforward

    3. i’m very interested in HTs comment that the away tickets were refunded electronically. I suspect that is a 100% reversal of card transaction , hence relatively easy

In summary, i don’t mind the printed form but anyone who didn’t sign up to electronic renewal should have got a form in the post and those of us who are electronic should have got an email

PS I am still chasing Aer Lingus for the voucher i claimed from the cancelled St Johnstone game. Was very slick and good service to offer it at the time but still no voucher. My wife is still awaiting payment for cancelled flights by Ryanair

On the refund thing I think theres been wee bit of jiggery pokerry by Celtic TBH. Example theres deffo a few fans that dont have access to the tinternet and printer as for the PO box number?? get a grip they have our bank details ffs. My ol’ uncle who i sit beside doesn’t do the tinternet in fact i have a hard time getting a reply from him when texting, hes not comfortable with it, the fon is for emergencys i think lol. So think of the folks who didn’t know about the form or did but had no access to tinternet or printer. And what the hell was wrong with sending/returning by email……….ye so a wee bit of jiggery pokerry Celtic IMHO of course

  19. If any team deserves a wee rest. It is Celtic.

The new Season could be spectacular.

Hopefully get the 10…. and I would like to play against Real Madrid in the Champions League preferably in the last 8 or better.⚽️⚽️🇮🇪⚽️⚽️

  20. i had a discussion with an exiled Celt who now has a Bournemouth season ticket. He thinks Celtic should not sign Jordin Ibie as he claims he is trouble and is a disruptive influence

  21. I am gonna lose 200pounds for a holiday deposit, anyone wana hazard a guess what my refund is?

Ffs we just saw our team doing the 9. At start of season that is what I hoped for and that is what got, grand being a celtic fan 😀

  22. Tim Malone Will Tell on

I watched Eliasson play for Bristol City when they played away to Brentford – looked pacey and pretty decent.

  23. I want Rodrigo Riquelme. No idea if he’s a player but that’s the sexiest latino name we’ve had at the club since Jorge Cadette…..

Of course some bam would have it reduced to RodRiq in about a week…….

  24. I thought Big Dermott would make a contribution to the cause maybe out of a guilty conscience seeing as he allowed Rangers to shaft the fans Regarding Res 12 and led them a merry dance along the way. He is happy to have no FFP in Scotland ( mmm I wonder why ) So no probs making a donation if he decides to do so .The least he and the board could do is just pay the fans their season ticket rebate without all the drama . All electronically of course. No Snail mail and cheques , its not the 90s anymore. Paul I am a bit embarrassed that you brought the Celtic Foundation into justifying taking a paltry sum from a relatively unknown guy who is very new to the scene . Also you said Celtic shouldnt take the Moral High ground …lolol , really ?? When it comes to the fans they dont have a Moral High ground . Oh They are great at talking the talk …. More than a club….big family ……etc etc . Yes it is to us the fans …..The Board have no Morals when it comes to us wee guys . Not been on in a while Im assuming there was a scathing article from Paul when the SFA kicked Res 12 into touch can anyone point me in the direction ……………

  25. See Sevco have won the closed season cup again. Over on FF (God forgive me) they have been offered 25 quid voucher that cannot be used against merchandise. I.E the new Carstairs home top, but no problems will put into MyGers fund. (Whatever that is)

Meanwhile perennial runners up “Celtic” offer a full refund and are getting many unhappy fans tearing them a new aeroshole. This does not affect me being a non ST holder.Saying not everyone has access to the internet I wonder how they found out about offer in the first place. Okay I agree that Celtic could have made it easier but don’t know why they chose the route they did. Maybe someone could contact the liaison officer and ask him.

If it gives you any comfort, Ibe has also been linked with Sevco.

Most of the reporting I’ve seen has suggested that a permanent move for Elyounoussi is unlikely. A loan is possible but I doubt it will be resolved soon.

I have a feeling its Elyounoussi on loan or somebody we haven’t been linked with yet.

  27. prestonpans bhoys on

Anyone heard of Charlie Lindsay , nope me neither but one of the most sought after youngsters in the UK. Says the Huns, close season cup winners again. Oh plays for Glentoran apparently😱

  28. Paul: On the Anderson money, I think you are dead wrong. The extra £1200-odd will make a difference to a lot of clubs. And even if the difference were negligible in cash terms it’s still the right thing to do.

The chronic delusion that we can reach a better life in some other league is corrosive to our club. The health of the Scottish game is crucial to Celtic. The best team we ever had, in its best-ever season, got beat home and away by a provincial club and won the league in a tense draw in the final game of the season, played against a European tournament finalist. That was proper football; that’s what we are lacking now.

The £1200 won’t bring that about, of course, but it would be a sign that we recognise our fellow clubs’ difficulties.

It’s not called a league for nothing.
