Why players betting on games is a serious offence

1618

How do you find out that a footballer is betting on the game?  They don’t walk into bookies and hand a slip over at the counter, this stuff is all done on smartphones or by telephone.

Betting information is protected by the Data Protection Act, the SFA have no authority to ask and bookmakers have no authority to tell, even if they know a player is breaking SFA rules.

Even if a player sits in the dressing room, and announces that he’s just bet on the match about to take place, and all his team-mates reported him, he would be able to dismiss the charge on the basis that his comments were a joke.  No one could prove otherwise.

But, very specific charges are levelled at players.

The betting industry survives on the quality of their information being better than that of their customers.  “Are you likely to win at the weekend?”, “Any inside info on who the new manager will be?”, “Who’s struggling to be fit for Saturday (and therefore unlikely to be first scorer)?”

If you are a player, you have the inside line on a market worth hundreds of millions each year.  Football has an unhealthy relationship with bookmakers, at some clubs, the betting partner has their own lounge and has full access to the players’ lounge.  Many players are big gamblers and some have big incomes.  They are both significant clients for bookies and potential sources of inside information.  Like many big gamblers, they are offered special odds, not available to the general public.

Let me tell you one way of catching a player who is gambling on football.  He is tempted away from his old bookie to one who has become friendly with, possibly after giving his former bookie a bum steer on a striker who was supposed to be injured.  The former bookie then ‘discovers’ that the name on one of their accounts doesn’t match the name on the linked bank account, and that this account holder is a footballer.

The bookie is now officially concerned that illegal match fixing is going on.  With the possibility of criminality (even if it is without basis), they can alert the authorities.  That would teach the player a lesson for leaving, while making money through advantageous odds and feeding bum information back, and destroy whatever competitive advantage the other bookie has.

Does anyone know of any other way a specific charge of gambling on football could be raised?

Maybe the players are all just daft laddies.  Maybe the SFA decline to release reports into players gambling because there is nothing to see in them.  Maybe you can break the rules on betting but not be punished because it’s a silly rule.

You don’t need to be match fixing to be involved in serious criminality when dealing with a bookmaker.  The football watching public need transparency from the SFA on this issue, no matter how much money floods into the game from the gambling industry.

Not surprised John Guidetti has postponed signing a permanent contract, that’s what footballers do, largely due to how much money they and their representatives can make, but only when the time comes.

John Guidetti has no loyalty to Celtic despite the fact that we resurrected a stuttering career, and put him on the podium, where he could bang in some goals and rebuild himself a name. His protracted talks eventually coincided with form loss and injury, so his decision to wait for a better deal hasn’t paid off, just yet.

Celtic could easily marginalize JG and have already begun the process of replacing him in his role as single striker, with the promotion of Leigh Griffiths. When Scepovic was brought the other night JG disappeared up the tunnel in a flounce, maybe he needed ‘to go’ anyway he returned to the bench.

If he’s banging on the first team door he’ll return, but only then.

Celtic have LG, SS, and AS who can all play in the lead striker role which isn’t about to alter as we’ve learned by now it’s Ronny’s way, which is eleven (if Craig Gordon comes up for a corner) potential goalscorers.

A pair of strikers is dead, and we’ve even seen full backs scoring more goals this season than they would dreamed have under previous managers. RD stated almost as soon as the window opened he expected to be working on transfers right until the last day, it’s the way Celtic do it, and the January window is for adjustments, and never part of long term planning.

Celtic should be reviewing whether LG SS and AS good enough for the CL qualification in 2015/16, if they come up short, we should have the name(s) of their successors, pencilled in now.

Here’s what a striker looks like

You know FR was a multi million pound footballer, made plenty of cash, had a great lifestyle.

He has been struck down with a horrendous disease, one of which our own Jimmy Johnstone died of. I feel for the guy and his predicament, he has the background to make some money to see him through, hopefully for many a year to come.

I am glad that Celtic have contributed to this venture of making FR some money.

Jimmy, I don’t know how well off financially he was prior to his death, but he certainly didn’t make the sums of FR

There are plenty who struggle through illness and don’t have the luxury of falling back on their previous employers.

FR I never liked as a player he hated us and you could see it in him.

Jimmy Johnstone well he was one of us in birth and death.

It’s the intangibles though. We invariably play better as a team when Scott Brown is in it.

Found this whilst trying to explain hubris to the youngest girl.

Now I wonder who we could apply these words to?

    Catching the Hubris Express

Living your life as if you’re alone,

    the only one alive.

Worried more about catching the next train

    You know this is wrong,

    completely unforgivable;

    yet you carry on nevertheless,

distracting yourself, so as not to acknowledge

the trail of tears left behind.

But, you see, a mistake has

you have finally met your match.

£3m is being quoted by die hard United fan Jim Spence.

I doubt they will get that much.

If Ronny Deila wants the man Celtic have to go get him. It’s important the manager gets the players he wants.

£8k per week or thereabouts. If we sign a £3m player from any other nation they will earn at least double that. It’s not just the initial fee that needs to be considered but the overall cost of the player over the period he is with us.

Man Utd appear to have about £200m worth of shoite! It’s not uncommon in modern fitba to be honest.

As I said previously, I accept (in fact, I believe, although I haven’t checked) that we probably gained more points per game when SB is in the team, than when he is out.

That might mean, in the past, and with the coaching/players and (most importantly, playing style) we then had, he was effective. But, we are moving in a different direction, and with a different style of play… one which SB is not really equipped (he can run all day, which RD seems to like, but his passing is not up to the standard required for RD’s style of game).

Under NFL, it was about last man defending/blood and guts football … all heart and little skill …. SB excelled at that . It was horses for courses … SB was a NFL type of player

So, I will accept that in the past we have been better with SB than without … but the parameters are changing … I think a McGinn would bring some of what SB does, plus more that is relevant and useful to the current team, particularly given the direction in which we are heading.

Whether we would have a better PPG previously with or without SB is impossible to PROVE. But I suspect that, given that SB was a NFL type player, it stands to reason that players suitable to a system would lead to a higher PPG.

Now, however, SB is not suitable to the passing style RD wants to play, so I suspect that our PPG would improve if we had a RD style player in the key mid role.

But, once again, I will watch Sb tomorrow, and hopefully, will see him growing into the role that RD wants/needs him to play.

  19. There is a story in the Herald Diary about a child calling Cameron’s radio show with a joke. “what vegetable makes your eyes water”, Andy chirps in,”an onion”

    “Nope”

Stumped he gives in, and asks for the answer

    “A turnip”

“a turnip, how does that make your eyes water”

“well, if you get hit in the b*ws wi’ a turnip, it will make your eyes water” replied the urchin

    You are one tough hombre!

If Leigh Griffiths and Stokesie can develop under RD, then SB Deffo can binders I’d argue he’s been consistently doing so for several years already.

As I have said to overseas supporters before, Scott Brown brings something to the game that is so much more obvious live than it is on TV. He is the heart of the Celtic team and someone to whom most of the other players look when inspiration and reassurance is required. He is very, very influential on the park.

Incidentally, I was shown a photo of you and Torontony when I visited CQN Corner on Wednesday. Even had I not known, I would instantly put you down as a couple of Bhoys 0:-)

Another point. Scott Brown`s passing is often criticised on here . It used to be poor. It is now much improved and occasionally excellent (see goal 4, I think, on Wednesday night). When a reputation, good or bad, is born, it takes quite some time for it to die.
