Winning to zero, far flung corners, Blue Pitching

294

It’s been dreich in Glasgow all week, so I was hoping the miserableness continued for our guests from sunny climes tonight.  A cold blast of wind and rain would surely suit our northern European locals, but it’s as though the city knows there’s a big European game on.  The weather is perfect for football.

Like most I’ve been in two minds about who we should start with up front but the truth is how we defend is more important.  A narrow win to zero is a good first leg result in Europe, I’d take that right now.  And I’d have Leigh up front!

Qarabag are a team who travelled across Europe last season with some purpose, but they haven’t experienced Celtic Park yet.  I’m hoping for a night like we had against Shakhter Karagandy, where we pull together to get the job done.

I watched a documentary on homelessness in the London borough of Tower Hamlets recently.  It seemed to be a shakedown area for those who have spun off the planet.  Poverty, social-exclusion, anonymity and hopelessness on an industrial scale in one of the world’s great cities.

The Celtic Foundation have been working in the far flung corners of world for years, as well as in Scotland and Ireland, but working with London’s needy, in Tower Hamlets, as they now are, has a different feel to it.  There’s a tendency to think of London as one huge cash machine, which it is in many respects, but it’s also where a lot of our poor end up.  The social isolation is absolute.

Celtic Foundation’s objectives, to improve Health, promote Equality, encourage Learning and tackle Poverty (HELP) know no boundaries.  We can’t be the biggest club in the world right now, but we can aspire to be the most ethical.  We (that’s you and me) can set the highest standards.

Nothing would demonstrate this more than having 100 people doing the Great Scottish Run for the Foundation in October.  Get yourself and/or a friend registered.  You don’t need to be fast, you just need to get around Glasgow in your own time, and target raising £125 for the Foundation.

Thanks to everyone who donated to our Mary’s Meals school kitchen appeal, in connection with yesterday’s Magners ticket competition.  It amazes me that every time we run a ‘Who do Celtic play on Saturday?’ competition, people get the answer wrong.  The winner will be drawn this lunchtime, so watch your email.

Thanks also to Magners.  The people there get the point of what the club’s all about.  They could have put their mineral water brand on the jerseys in Iceland, where local laws don’t allow alcohol sponsorship, but they offered the space to the Foundation instead.

These guys at Newco love a drama.  They’ve blocked the rights of four shareholders, including memorable name Blue Pitch Holdings, who declined to answer questions on about the nature of their interests in the club.

The Companies Act provides for this as you have a right to know if your shareholders are, for example, amassing shares for a prospective takeover bid.  It’s unlikely Blue Pitch and the others are planning a coup of this nature.  A response along the lines of ‘Hoping for future dividends and capital growth’ would be sufficient.  It strikes me as a pointless exercise, playing to the gallery, although it’s consistent with their other shareholder charm offensives.

Totally agree, but I believe we’re more likely to get a goal over there than a clean sheet here…. If that makes sense.

Hope we do both but it could be a two leg fixture.

    Unless we score 3!

Qarabag’s second (or third) rate Brazilian forward, Reynaldo Silva, looks like a whole handful of anxiety for Virgil and the Bhoy Ata.

Here’s a youtube assemblage, replete with a backing track of Azerbaijan’s most recent entry into the Brazilovision Song Contest, and featuring a classic (and well executed) Dead Man’s Fall sniper hit.

Are you really living in Baku? If so, this must be a special time…..and next week , perhaps depending on tonight`s result, will be even more so.

A win to zero and a death strike in the upper ninety should make the return tie a doozy for Celtic Glasgow.

  9. ThompsonTwin – I have also lived in London when I left 6 weeks rent deposit was common and I’d seen 8 in places. Where does somebody that ‘chooses’ to live rough get around £1000 for their first month rent and deposit, before their benefits get sorted?

  10. My Glasgow mole bumped into the Qarabag team yesterday . They were out for a stroll and looked very unimpressed with the local weather. They were a long way from home in an alien environment.

Tonight I meet up with my mole and his Kazahkstani student friend. Kazahkstan consulate handing out free tickets to any of their countrymen who want to go.

If we are persisting with one striker, then it,s got to be griffiths,he,s scored for us and looks lively all the time,Ciftci no goals looks slow cumbersome and not much better than Balde,or Scepovic, why we signed a third rate player with a dodgy disciplinary record, who was about to be banned, just says it all about our board and manager clueless

Isn’t it ironic that 6 of the first 7 games ( I think) have been moved to suite TV and Celtic can’t give their overseas fans the opportunity to watch the only game that hasn’t been changed live

You are quick to criticize Celtic TV. As an overseas supporter, I can tell you that they do a great job at bringing us the games. This may be the ONLY game we don’t see live here in Canada.

If you don’t know the ins and outs, why would you presume that they could have gotten this deal done any better?

  18. My mate is a season ticket holder for Cliftonville and they use a bar code scanning entry system. Has a barcode on his phone he uses every time he goes. Says the system is always breaking down and they are reduced to showing your phone to stewards at the gate as you walk past. So guys are using last years without having paid for this years…

My criticism is that for overseas fans who pay a fee yearly they are not able to get today’s match when it isn’t being screened

Therefore CTV have exclusivity of the match and could show it

I agree with them preventing it from being shown in UK to generate a larger home gate

  22. BT….

I honestly don’t know the details. I suspect that few of us do. But I do not believe it is correct to say that Celtic TV have exclusivity.

    What a stupid,crass, generalisation.

Tell me have you done the research that proves that the majority of homeless in London do so out of choice.

    Pure unadulterated Thatcherite nonsense.

    ———————————————————————————————

Look – there is a distinction between people being being homeless and looking for somewhere to live and the people living ROUGH on the streets – sleeping under railway arches and in doorways.

The majority of the latter do not want the regime and constrictions of society – I have seen absolutely countless, someone from the street going through the hostel system, drying out and getting a place of their, usually a small council flat, or, bedsit, paid for by Housing Benefit, direct to the council, housing association, or landlord, and then in a matter of weeks, sometimes days, deserting the place and going back on the street.

These are facts – I do not lie. There is approximately £19,000 per year available to these people in London, plus guidance and counselling services – frankly most don’t want to be ‘in the system’

Name -calling is puerile, address the argument with facts – I am always open to another point of view, but it must be fact-based, not just abuse.

I have already said that those who are disabled and can’t manage, should be fully supported.

There are those on here who back the ‘living wage’ – that translates as £14,500 per year – I am saying that unemployed people ‘on the street’ in London, can get the equivalent of £19,000 per year, IF they are willing to help themselves, look for work and/or training – what in God’s name is WRONG with that?

I could buy you a ticket and meet you before match bud.

  30. Life just got worse, the Azeri TV have just pulled the game tonight as Celtic have backed out (allegedly) at the last minute on the TV rights .

According to the CTV “wall” live audio for all from 19.45 and video delayed overseas from 21.00 (UK Time) .

Not doing our global brand any good here in Baku , CSC club here and lots of Celts here in Baku , tremendous interest from the locals in this tie , looks like Celtic have behaved badly with the TV rights , the Azeri authorities are waiving the need for a visa prior to travel and giving Celtic fans a visa on arrival for the Baku game , and we wont let them see the game on telly!

  31. THE rush for tickets for tonight’s match against Qarabag continues. The Hoops will be bidding to secure a positive first-leg result ahead of the return match next Wednesday in Baku, Azerbaijan, and Celtic fans have been busy snapping up tickets for the big match.

In order to meet the demand we will be opening up selected turnstiles for cash entry at the match at Celtic Park.

Areas 415 – 419, in the Lisbon Lions stand will be for fans paying cash ONLY. Entry will be via turnstiles 48-49, 53-54 and 59-61.

Prices will be £22 for adults, £12 for under 16/65+ and £7 for under 13s. Fans wishing to use the cash turnstiles are advised to bring the correct amount in order to assist with keeping queues to a minimum.

Turnstiles will open at 6.30pm, so make sure you get there early to avoid disappointment.

Fans who have already purchased tickets and have yet to collect them are also advised to come along to Celtic Park early. The Ticket Office will be open from 9.30am until kick-off tomorrow.

Alternatively you can avoid any matchday queues at the Ticket Office using our print-at-home facility which is now available. Buy online and you’ll be able to choose the option to print your ticket which you can then scan at the turnstiles for entry.

Your support will be vital so makes sure you get along to Paradise tomorrow to back the Bhoys.

With your support we can do it.
