Aberdeen fans, grasping financial fundamentals

627

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge Aberdeen fans’ banner on Saturday in response to their chairman, Stewart Milne’s suggestion that fans are damaging our game with talking about the consequences of clubs being found to be cheating.
capture-20151221-130408

I know some people learned the lessons of 2012 but others appear to have acquired amnesia. Back in 2012 only one SPL club was of the view that Rangers should not be allowed to phoenix and gain entry to top flight football. After a considerable campaign by fans, all others, apart from Rangers themselves, and Kilmarnock, decided it would be better if existing rules were allowed to stand on the matter.

Milne was off his head making his comments. The only way to possibly pull a stroke like this would be to keep quiet about it, even then I doubt it would be achievable. Making his feelings known was only going to engage Aberdeen supporters, who will have the ultimate view on what the club do.

The issue remains in the long grass until the Supreme Court have concluded their business, but what we said in October remains valid: if Celtic stand alone, the matter will not be looked at again, if other clubs are on-board, it will be examined appropriately. It is for fans of Aberdeen, United, Hibs, Hearts, Motherwell and make their feelings known.

The Herald’s piece this morning on Newco being “handed a place in the Premiership next summer as a result of some hastily-arranged league reconstruction” was remarkable. It was absurd but also worthy of respect. “NOBODY at Rangers (sic.)” wants this, but as other clubs need for Newco’s promotion is so great, apparently this is not really implausible.

Promote them, not because they are in need, because other clubs need them.

The starting position on league reconstruction is notable. For years only Celtic and Rangers blocked the SPL from being expanded. The majority of top flight clubs live in fear of (and experienced) relegation. They want a less competitive middle to the league. When the SPFL was formed a temporary moratorium of league reconstruction was agreed. This moratorium is due to expire shortly, a window for change is about to open up.

Tracking underneath all of these debates are the financial fundamentals. Newco is not financially viable. They are not viable in the Championship and although Premiership football would give them a few millions more, it would not change the fundamentals.

The circa £17m it takes to run a club at Ibrox before you employ football staff leaves little money for football given their anticipated top-flight income. It would take years and many tens of millions of dead investment to change this, as well as Mike Ashley raising the white flag.

These facts have not been grasped yet as the consequences of the hoped for investment of tens of millions not appearing are not being considered. Dave King might invest £30m-£50m, so with a fair wind everything might be OK. On the other hand, I think even £50m is tight, and I don’t see anything like that money heading to Ibrox.

The consequences of what happened in 2012, even on these pages, have yet to be realised. The old business model is finished, it’s not coming back.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the Foundation Christmas Appeal bucket collection on Saturday. You see people at their very best on these occasions. If you want to know how your money will be spent have a read here.

Very last shout from CQN Bookstore for Christmas delivery, if you’re after 16:00, it’ll be after the festives’ before you get your book or DVD.

Can I ask you a simple honest question, no ulterior motive, just curious.

I am in your camp when it comes to the team and coaching staff, I will defend them till the cows come home, the suits is where we differ.

    Question is……

What if the club do or say nothing re all the cheating and corruption, what will you position be ?

Cos I know how much you dislike the cheating hun bassas as we all do.

  3. My friends in Celtic,

I see the Arsenal players donated their money yesterday to their own charity foundation. I also see that Man City ( not for the first time) subsidised their fans trip last night.

The Celtic foundation is a wonderful cause, and I know that our players are charitable in their own ways, but possibly after Saturdays capitulation maybe our players or the club should have made some amends to the supporters who made the effort.

Funny you should ask that as that question was asked yesterday to me me in the pub and I’ll tell you exactly how I answered it.

If there not at the very least an asterisk on those years and cups and leagues with thems cheating by the start of the 16/17 season, I will no longer be a season ticket holder at Celtic Park, I am loyal, not to be mistaken for stupid, and my mates know when I say a thing, it’s a done deal, hop that answers your question?

    No.

It’s those who are advancing the argument who are saying it’s the right thing, and the only reason the Board haven’t done the right thing is the potential reperussions for themselves or others.

If that argument is valid for the board then why isn’t it valid for the players, managers, etc?

  8. I’m struggling to understand the mindset of a petition to sack the current Celtic manager, there’s a lot of talk of the disconnect of the board to the fans well here’s the SP news I am totally disconnected from Celtic fans that would start a petition to remove the manager of our club.

FFS go and borrow the huns we deserve better banner…

  9. JJHS,

It seems I owe you an apology. After reading about that petition, we do have some fans who act like the Huns.

A petition to sack the Celtic manager is appalling.

It’s more deserving of a sine die ban than letting off a smoke flare ( which devices as I understand it are designed to be held in the hand whilst sitting in a small rowing boat at sea, so unlikely to be a major risk inside a stadium).

  11. GERRYFAETHEBRIG on 22ND DECEMBER 2015 11:37 AM

I don’t think as fans we have ever been close to the board, I remember my father never having a good word about the Kelly’s or the Whites, as for Ronny getting the sack at Christmas (which he won’t) it doesn’t sit right with me when he is going for 5 out of 6 domestic trophies…..

Get Scott Allan in the team along with Anthony Stokes and the goals will come, Griff will get 30+ and Ciftic & Cole might get 10 between them so 40+ from our strike force will see us picking up more trophies

    ——-

Gerry, for the last bit of your post to come to pass, Ronny would need to be gone.

Besides, he want want to play both of them out of position at outside left, that is, if they could get past the guys currently playing out of position at outside left…..

  12. We all have our opinion on RD & if he should be replaced or not but whoever created a petiton to have him sacked should be ashamed.

Hopefully they come to their senses and delete said petiton immiediately

    Embarrassing!

An excellent post. We could have sent out a message, not only to them but to the wider footballing world.

Instead, the message is “don’t worry huns, we’ll come back to meet you half way.”

  14. Just a quick hit and run (partly coz I’m at work and partly to avoid the inevitable abuse/flack)…

This irrational crusade to drive RD out of our club (“more than a club my erse!) is utterly pointless. No manager with any pedigree will come to manage a team in a third rate league (even a team virtually guaranteed to win it every year).

And do the RD dissenters think that they are making the position appear more attractive to prospective future post-holders with the endless tirade of vitriol against the present incumbent, in spite of the fact that he is as successful domestically as any other manager we have had in modern times?

Ah, but I miss the point, the Celtic manager is not judged on domestic performance, as Celtic are expected to win the treble any year, and any less is deemed a failure (by the deluded). In order to be regarded as a success, a Celtic manager must put out a team who can qualify for the Champions League every season, and even get through the group stage and into the last 16, with players whose competitive spirit, tenacity, tactical awareness, speed of thought and execution, ball control and accuracy of distribution are honed week in and out against the likes of Ross County, St Johnstone and Kilmarnock.

Do the dissenters not realise that the problem is in the lack of competition faced every week domestically, rather than because the manager is no good? It doesn’t matter who we get in (of those that are available and would actually come), the background to our present situation would not have changed, and it is unlikely that the outcomes would significantly change as a result.

What would give more chance of a significant improvement in our European performances and results would be more competition in the domestic environment. Not necessarily a certain club eventually coming back to a level where we can have a two horse race each year, but more one where we can have a real and sustained challenge on a number of fronts, from the likes of Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs, Dundee United, Motherwell, ICT, and dare I say, eventually them. Paradoxically, being guaranteed domestic success every year pretty much guarantees a lack of European success (even by our own limited definition thereof), whilst NOT being guaranteed domestic success due to a more competitive environment in Scotland would likely deliver a team more capable of achieving European successes if and when they actually qualify.

And therein lies the other stark fact for those who discount RD’s domestic success. You have to be successful domestically to even get a shot at the European competitions. So our team has to be jusged on its domestic achievements before we can even think about European success. And turning the ship upside down every 2-3 years for yet another rebuild is not going to give us the stability to deliver that.

Be careful what you wish for…

  15. In retrospect we should have asked for the league to be suspended when NL and niall mcginn were being sent bullets, and our coach moved in the middle of the night due to viable threats etc. The threat wasn’t over a few weeks, it was near indefinite. It was on a whole different level from previous managers’ harassment and intimidation.

As soon as it became life threatening, celtic should have withdrawn from the league or the SPL should have suspended it. celtic were negligent in their duty of care to Neil Lennon by not withdrawing from the league.

Next time there is violence and intimidation to our staff, maybe cfc should consider the option of withdrawing from the scottish game until the scottish game is fit and proper to receive a team with a Catholic/ immigrant identity.

Lay it straight out in the open – we can’t fairly operate and live in scotland due to life threatening intimidation. Tell UEFA. Look for a league to play in under these special circumstances. Could be the logical and easiest way out of scotland if we prove the intimidation and threat of violence is true. We certainly will have enough documented evidence to make a persuasive case to UEFA

  16. Ernie

Personally I think Celtic are right to ban those who took flares into the stadium in Turkey.

    An indefinite ban?

    No, but a ban nonetheless.

It was an incredibly stupid thing to do. If you’re old enough to do it, you’re old enough to know what the repercussions would be.

Good post mate and until there is a desire among all of the clubs in the game to clean it up Scottish Football will continue to be a sham…

In the wake of the exposure of FIFA, Blatter, Plantini.

It is right to push for an investigation into the Scottish Football Authorities.

They should be made to account for their actions.

The clearance of Dave King as a fit and proper person, are grounds for investigation.

That is only the tip of the iceberg.

UEFA should be dealing with this.

A petition to get Ronny sacked shows that many Celtic fans do in fact get taken in by the MSM in my opinion it is out of order we should be faithfull through and through and give Ronny and the team all the support we can remember we are still going for the treble. I also think there are many hoops fans marking time to see the outcome of the court cases involving the Ibrokes mob many us wont continue to support a cheating regime if it is not fixed and a level playing field established I believe Celtic will lose many many fans.H.H.
