Development strategies

Booking £20m from TV rights in China over 10 years is a remarkable deal for the SPFL, it shows a lot of faith from broadcaster, PPLive, who have the responsibility to foster the league in the world’s most populous country.  The cash will be beer money to Celtic but represents a substantial income for most of the Premiership.

The deal opens the door for Celtic to follow-through, the only club with the wherewithal to exploit the merchandising, scouting and recruitment opportunities there.  We’ve seen strategies developed in Mexico, India and now China, while the European football-tourist market is also now being targeted through online partners.

None of this will put the ball in the Ajax net tomorrow night but it is important nonetheless.

Delighted we’re at Tynecastle in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.  Hearts players found the will to live against Hibs last week but they have little more than effort to their game.  Should be a cracking tie, which will not be subject to the performance vagaries of a home tie with Morton.

Keeping possession is my main concern. When you don’t have the ball, it is hard work trying to defend and win it back, Hence in the final 10-15 mins I think we tire mentally.

So like LiviBhoy, I’d love to see us retain possession for longer periods.

However, to do this I feel we need better movement off the ball.

If Neil and the coaching staff can improve on this, then I think this young team can go places.

  7. Johann Murdoch,

hope you and TT and MalorBhoy all ok.

    Look after yourselves today.

Id imagine Dam Square will be safest place today given the amount of Hoops who will be there.

From the looks of it (Dam Sq webcam) a few already started to congregate there already.

Stay safe and enjoy the game Johann.

  11. LOL just had a wee look at the live feed from Amsterdam, usual Valkyrie (tall slim blonde Dutch women) passing by but out of nowhere an anomaly appears – a small rotund (very) female figure in a Celtic top along with her partner wondering across the square! So far 1-0 to the Dutch babes. Ok less of the voyeurism and misogynistic comments. Back to work :-)

  12. You may recall that BRTH missed the match at the weekend as he was attending a family celebration for his dad’s 86th birthday. Well this morning I received a feature for the next edition of CQN Magazine – not written by BRTH but by his father BRTH Senior!

This features gives an insight into following Celtic since 1941, when the bombs were dropping on Clydebank. BRTH Senior also picks his own Celtic team from the players he has watched. An unmissable feature.

  13. That Euro Bar is missing a trick

They should have got an early license, and opened for breckie.

Where is the Dutch entrepreneurial spirit ?

Let’s hope the Ajax team lack the same qualities tonight.

  17. LiviBhoy –

Got to disagree. It’s a must win game for Ajax but not for Celtic.

A draw leaves us 2 points in front and an excellent chance of third spot and a place in the Europa League.

A win gives us a decent chance of qualifying from the group, but in no way is it a must win game for us.

  18. Joe Filippis Haircut on

In Europe you only get a few chances to score and that is my concern for tonight we are short of the cutting edge needed to score a couple of goals. It stems from a lack of creativity in the midfield both a goal scorer and a creative midfielder.I think the best we can hope for is a 0-0 draw I hope I am wrong and we can win the game but it is going to be a very stiff test for us.H.H.

    Tom McLaughlin

I think we just see it in different ways. I think that Neil Lennon sees it as a huge opportunity to progress. Ajax are wounded. They haven;t won a game for a while. They are down and it’s a real chance to go for the jugular. We can’t even think about AC Milan yet which may well be our next cup final but I think there is more chance of winning this game tonight than beating Milan at home.

The way I look at it we have a few of our big game players back. We are away from home which may actually suit us against Ajax because they will not be as cautious and slow going forward as the first match. If Samaras and Forrest are both fully fit we have a very dangerous wepaon in the counter attack.

To me tonight is our cup final and is a must win for the reasons above. I will worry about the AC Milan game when it comes around.

  20. I have been speaking to my Dutch colleagues about the Ajax fans and why the police don’t just hammer the crap out of them. Consensus is the Dutch Police would rather hand out speeding tickets than confront them. I told them that is exactly the same attitude of the Glasgow Police. Scared of big boys but will harass the bejaysus out of a group of teenagers peacefully walking to a game of football.

  21. LiviBhoy

    8 Euro a pint Is that with a constant top-up? :-)

Yes, it will be interesting to see if it’s empty come 4PM today

Probably be fine today but it is pricey. The whole of Amsterdam is not that cheap tho.

Agree, was over for the game in 2001, had a great time then, and a great result. The only trouble i saw back then was our own imported gangland shooting.

I really hope the Ajax thugs are known to Police, and kept seperatated today.

It has the potential to be a ‘tricky’ day.

  28. I had a flat in Amsterdam in my younger days…met a lot of good Dutch people, still have friends there.

You would think, that considering what the Dutch went through in WW2, the Ajax fans would be slightly more aware of sectarianism….its sad to see. Been on the phone to a Dutch pal of mine(Ajax fan), he is outraged at the attack on Celtic supporters.

The Dutch on the whole are good people, just don’t owe them any money:)…(joke)

    Sorry Bart :)
