2020 will be the year of the trader

421

It will not have escaped your attention that Scott Bain is the only senior goalkeeper under contract at Celtic.  Fraser Forster is floating around while we wait and see if we can afford to meet Southampton’s terms (assume nothing here), while Craig Gordon rejected a “vastly reduced” offer to stay.

I know how important Fraser was last season, so if at all possible, I would have him back, but as a general position, I would be reluctant to pay comparable rates to anyone not in the ‘absolutely critical’ category.  Football clubs everywhere cannot afford the contracts they paid last year.  Like Celtic, many have to pay expensive long-term deals, but there can scarcely be a club in the world that would not be happy to offload players to generate enough cash to keep them in grass seed.

With so much trauma in the market, the clubs who shed expensive contracts and take advantage of newfound value from places they could not afford to buy from a year ago, will make the biggest gains this year.

The challenge for Celtic is to find a keeper who can mount a genuine challenge as first choice on the “vastly reduced” offer we made to Craig.  The same is true for other positions we are looking to fill.  Having missed Champions League football for two seasons, we have to be frank and admit that despite closing in on a fourth consecutive treble and nine-in-a-row, there are better players across Europe than some in our squad.  2020 will be the year of the trader, let’s roll the dice!

I’m not against reconstruction on principle, but like everyone else in the country, the first thing I think of is, “What’s in it for my club?”  A 14 team top flight has two fewer games against bottom 6 (or 8) clubs.  These games do nothing for Celtic beyond cluttering up our calendar, so I’m happy with that.

Since Hearts have moved on from both the football-competency and arrogant-belligerence approaches to avoiding relegation, their latest proposal, for a 14-10-10-10 setup hit the “What’s in it for me?” question.  For most clubs the answer is nothing, beyond putting your name to a motion that helps a club that participated in an outrageous charade against the league in recent months.  Aesop could have told the tale of Hearts actions this year.

I think my hatred of bitter huns came at an early age when i got

a boot in the haw maws from one coming out of a pub in KP………

Mines was after i made my 1st holy communion my pals (proddy dogs eat the frogs) although none of us knew what was what at that age..gave me a right kickin’ and started calling me a fenian bastard.

revenge came swiftly as i laid wait on them one at a time before school …the plan was (as my ol man told me) was to get them when they were still groggy in the morn. I kicked the shit outta them…revenge was a dish best served cold!!!

We all agree that a game at Tynecastle is a worthy fixture.

Howevva, since the league is judged on merit and points gained, they thoroughly deserve to be relegated.

Unless we want to introduce a franchise style competition like the NFL.

Does anyone think Budge or indeed anyone would be lobbying so hard if Hamilton, Livingston or Ross County we’re firmly fixed to the foot of the table?

    Thanks in advance

  9. A14 team top league would be better, much prefer playing teams an equal amount of times over the course of a season. Also reduces games for the top which is a good thing.

Surely it benefits the teams most likely to be fighting relegation (even if you have 2 automatic delegations and a relgation play off spot), given those teams will have more chance of coming back up.

There is generally no losers and plenty of winners. It would be short sighted in the extreme for clubs like hamiltin, ross county and st Mirren to vote against such a plan.

Teams like hibs, aberdeen, motherwell, dundee united etc. lose next to nothing, get to mix the league up a bit and also increase the likelihood of more derbies.

So we will see a vote against no doubt

Alf Garnett would probably be banned now but he was created to ridicule the racist attitudes of the day.

    ——————–

Your post reminded me of something Johnny Speight said in an interview years back.

It struck me then and has stayed with me.

When asked where he got the inspiration to create the character of Alf Garnett

    He replied …

    “I didn’t create him. I grassed him”.

  14. Timbhoy2

Big Fraser was immense last season. If he had that cross catching sorted he’d be the world’s best. Getting him signed up with Eddie at Number 7 in a new Adidas Hoops top is what we are waiting for.

Play 2 up front next season – Eddie and Griff with Klimala (who needs games) back up. Bayo just looks clumsy and bambi-like to me. Don’t see a player there.

Yes there were times I’m sure you knew

When I bit off more than I could chew

But through it all when there was doubt

I ate it up and spit it out, I faced it all

And I stood tall and did it my way

I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried

I’ve had my fill, my share of losing

    And now as tears subside

I find it all so amusing…..

Very sorry to hear your ending the Friday night Quiz, All good things come to an end I suppose, sorry also that I am most unlikely to be around tonight, I might attempt to answer a question on my phone just for the sake of it but I am as slow as a tortoise on a lap top so God help me trying to respond on a phone.

Anyway would just like to thank you sincerely for all the time & effort you have put in, to provide such great entertainment.

Yep, That’s the McGinleys. Pick you up and drop you off. More like a taxi than a bus.

All fine down here. D&G had/has the lowest mainland infection rate for quite some time now. I was actually allowed out this week for something other than hay and straw ….champagne.

Why was the Robert the Bruce statue vandalised?

    —-

i think it was because he sat and watched a spider struggle and fail to spin a web, and then keep trying and failing to spin the web

the spider was black in colour so his failure to help in the spiders struggle clearly has racial undertones

    hence the statue gets it

  25. I’m hoping and expecting that our prudence in the last few weeks in not renewing contracts and offering lesser terms to Gordon is evidence of our determination to get value for money. Hopefully the real money outlays are being focused on the must not lose players like Eddie and Forster.

I want to see Moi remain and a replacement for Jozo. Let’s focus our resources into making theses things happen.

If our third choice keeper isn’t happy then he leaves with the thanks and best wishes of all the support.

  26. Thanks to those who made suggestions about a fan statue, I guess it would be difficult to put all our choices on one plinth, What about a father/mother and young ones representing the Celtic family through all of our story? I think supporters should be recognised for their contribution to the club since its inception.
