40 years since an iconic striker youth graduate

541

Notwithstanding we had four strikers isolating and that under most circumstances, four strikers would be sufficient, the games against Hibs and Livingston highlighted a long-term problem.  Celtic have been able to produce wingers, defenders and midfielders who have become first choice starters in the first team, but we are unable to produce a striker.

In the last 20 years, Craig Beattie is arguably our most successful striker-graduate from the youth system (gulp), and he moved on having scored 13 goals for the club, the kind of return Leigh Griffiths may have hoped for in a month, a few years back.

Gerry Creaney made his debut 31 years ago and spent a couple of seasons as a regular starter, before eventually playing Premier League football for Manchester City (it was a different world back then, kids), but Gerry was nowhere near a top performer at the club.

It is now over 40 years since the last iconic striker, Charlie Nicholas, came through the youth system to electrify Celtic Park for three seasons.  He returned for a five-year spell later, when he largely stood on the same spot every 90 minutes, before working out some deep therapeutic issues as a media pundit in later years.

40 years and we were unable to produce a striker with the talent of Leigh Griffiths, despite many changes in coaches, systems and first team budgets?  This sounds unlikely.  I suspect the opportunities afforded to the young Leigh at Livingston were denied to hundreds of Celtic youth strikers.

  1. We’ve all wanted the club to take the Celtic haters to task for years.

Dubai was wrong, why wait until you’re in the wrong before letting fly?

    Its another own goal unfortunately.

  2. Those of you expecting the CEO to help the manager out after his media conference are sadly mistaken. Unless there is personal gain out of it or to protect himself in someway it will be radio silence. He looks after no 1.

The manager should have ran the script by his CEO and club lawyer. Clearly he didn’t and that was not a wise or professional move.

Have sympathy with his points however he has also not stated the broader context and it was wrong to go to Dubai.

At the end of the day he has failed as the football manager of the club and I do know what he was expecting to achieve with his comments either within or external to Celtic. It was Lennon’s Pedro in the hedge moment ; with the barking dogs and caravans not far away in the message. It’s amazing we have come full circle and our banter years are just beginning.

Well done Lawwell and the PLC Board. A dead club will win its 55th title in a few weeks time.

  3. Spikey – I agree with what Lenny was saying, but now we are all talking about that whilst he steers us to the worst season in about 15 years.

I think what NFL has had to put up with in this country is disgusting, but if Lawell, Bankier et all are not sitting beside him then it is a disjointed effort.

When I say the worst season under Neil’s stewardship his team selections, formations the whole kit and caboodle has been Dross, there has been 2 maybe 3 games this season where I thought ok we can build on that, the football has been pathetic. Players look disinterested, coaching staff look disinterested an utter shambles yet we are talking about Neil trying to defend going to Dubai and saying there is a concerted effort by some in the smsm and sky to get him the sack and they are talking nonsense.

NEWSFLASH Neil they have been doing it for years.

As I say I admire the way Neil has handled the sheer bigotry in this country and it saddens me that he has had to put up with it, but no harm to Neil Celtic will be here long after he is gone and that is my concern, either he should resign immediately or be sacked.

    D :)

  4. What happened tae the Celtic Chairman who said we’re not going tae sit at the back pf the bus anymore. Oh forgot he was labelled a war monger. Wish we had more war mongers that would take the scottish freemason association on again.

  5. I can’t disagree with Neil. No other club would have received the media battering that we got. So I get his point.

The problem remains though, a huge number of fans are angry at the club for going to Dubai and taking the risk. Right or wrong, legal as it was, knowing the battering Celtic will get from our haters, we should have known better and acted differently.

Right attitude Neil, maybe the wrong timing.

Think they might want to convert him to a centre half

  7. I too did not want to comment on Neil’s 40 sec clip (or the 2 additional clips I have seen since) until I’d seen/heard the whole media briefing to gauge context.

For those posting that they can’t find the whole press conference from today – BADA posted (@ 6.32) an audio clip. Go right back to the start of audio clip (6,01) and you’ll hear the whole lot from Neil…his spiel lasts about 20 mins, before Neil abruptly ends the briefing.

He spoke a lot of home truths, and offers up his personal opinion (rather than the clubs). Says a lot that we would want said, which was good to hear. But unfortunately his obvious anger becomes uncontrolled, which does him no favours.

He should have stuck to a pre-planned script of grievances, and not get drawn into airing his personal views without a greater level of restraint. His good points will get glossed over by the manner of his spiel (rant like). Imo.

BLANTYRETIM IS PRAYING FOR THE KNOX FAMILY on 18TH JANUARY 2021 8:54 PM

Thanks for that link, apart from trying to defend the trip, can’t argue with a lot he said.

Only makes me wonder why now, as for the board cowards of the highest order

  9. And the BT posts the whole video, as I typed lol

Ps to those foolish enough to post/spread unfounded rumours that the newest + test came from Duffy….it’s already been widely reported, and confirmed by Neil Lennon, that the the players was already isolating. Hint: Duffy played on Saturday…so was NOT one of the players isolating.

I would like to see the full thing, as he said that the distancing on a plane was changed from 2m to 4m on Celtic’s return, if that isnt someone trying to find fault then nothing is.This stinks if this is the case but NL has said it so questions must be asked. They wont be asked of the dentist or FM by the press here so an official letter from Club lawyers to the Scottish Government must be sent and the relpies posted on the Club Website or via club media.

If the Government are threatening to pull the plug on football let them , NL mentioned the Scotland Conga, the dressing rooms at Hamilton and St Johnstone being cramped and having 3 players per bus going to Easter Road, this stuff is getting made up as it goes along, however Sevco are portrayed as doing the right thing commended by Government, when, players how many are unknown but will be known to someone, had a party for a birthday. Definitely different standards and looking like its what colour of jersey you wear.

  11. Re – press conference: If that’s the way NFL is feeling, the team will be absolutely flying from now on in! Let’s get after them Celtic!!! por cierto

  12. When Sevco go to Belgium they will need several aircraft to meet 4m distancing, if it is even allowed.

  13. Neil said what most of us feel. It was PL’s responsibility not Neil’s and he’s been hung out to dry

Really believe whether he stays or not we should be 100% behind him. In our hour of need when Rogers left he came, time for payback

As a community we protect our own

  14. blantyretim is praying for the Knox family on

I agree it would be better to see the whole press conference the audio link asked you to log into BBC which I won’t do

  15. TT,

Yes John Reid was a proper Chairman and he called out RFC and Murray without fear or favour.

The snivelling Bankier should not be on the Celtic Board never mind Chairman. Lawwell another coward.

These guys actually think the fans are the enemies ; their whole mantra is set up for that and ended up with them erecting their own version of the Mexican wall.

Can’t wait to see to see the begging letters for the season tickets. They will need a modern day Hans Christian Andersen to write a fairytale. I confidently predict the renewals will be extended and extended until they realise in August they have 30k season tickets and are out of the CL.

  16. blantyretim is praying for the Knox family on

Unfortunately John Reid was all bark and no bite .. the dossier we where promised never turned up a bit like weapons of mass destruction

  17. John Reid used to sit directly behind me in the North Stand, por cierto, he was in the posh seats, then he got the N.I. portfolio and was no longer present. Imagine having that credibility to speak for you, especially at this time. That old saying, you never know what you had until you don’t have it comes to mind, por cierto.

  18. Quandary:

While I think change is inevitable and desirable, I sincerely hope Neil’s press conference will not be the reason the board use to facilitate change.

We couldn’t mess this season up any more, could we ?

CALL ME GERRY on 18TH JANUARY 2021 9:17 PM

Would you agree that Celtic PLC have a duty of care towards NL and that in him being allowed to, frankly, go off on one in full hire of the nation, they have yet again failed miserably ???

PL has let loose the “Big Bad Proddy SNP/Everybody Hates Us” squirrel via the impulsive manager. Plenty on here have picked it up and ran with it.

Why did PL not play that card himself last week?

Why not come out with these e-mails where the Scottish Government have supposedly moved the goalposts? Make the bullets for some other patsy to take the rap for them.

NL is the front for this and yet again left blowing in the wind.

Some at Celtic Park tonight should be hanging their heads in shame.

Managed to see some of the manager’s presser.

His points could be valid during any given season and it yanks my chain.

    Why now?

His valid points will be portrayed as a man desperate to deflect from a car crash.

Ditto the MIBs. Why are they sometimes criticised only after defeat?

It comes across as deflection and sour grapes.

Call out the SMSM and Hundits after 9 in a row. Ban Sky after skelping the Huns. Call out MIBs after victory.

Maybe it’s taken a car crash of a season to remind everyone how Scoddland operates. Hopefully it will live long in the mind.

Where is this 2 meter plane distance moving to 4 meter coming from?

Only seen a Twitter account mentioning it and he/she couldn’t even spell Jullien properly😱

  22. John Reid was the chairman when my daughter was a mascot.

He went out his way to make her welcome and spent time getting to know us.

He didn’t need to go to these lengths, and I doubt the current chairman would.

    HH.

Incidentally Steven Presley was also magnificent and all the staff I encountered couldn’t sing his praises highly enough. ( especially the ladies )

  23. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Spare us the Neil Lennon’s been hung out to dry tosh.

If you actually listened to him he said the Dubai trip was his idea, so he should defend it..

Hats off to him for trying.
