AGM, buys, refs and new reveal on ownership

153

Brendan Rodgers reclaimed some of his territory disputed by conspiracy theorists at yesterday’s AGM.  The manager explained how transfers worked at Celtic, insisting, “it’s really no different here to most clubs.”

The coaches identify the profile of players required, the scouts create a shortlist, and the manager makes the final decision.  Notions than Brendan would take a job under any other circumstances are for the fairies.

Refereeing standards are often raised at these occasions and yesterday was no different.  Michael Nicholson explained the club are in regular contact with the SFA over the issue and that there is a meeting today on the subject.

The biggest reveal of the day was from Ross Desmond, director and son of major shareholder, Dermot, who said, “My father grew up a huge Celtic fan. We don’t consider ourselves as shareholders, we are custodians.  In his lifetime and mine, we will not sell the club.”

We have never heard this intention before.  Dermot has been a major investor in the club for 29 years.  Now in his 70s, some of us wondered what his exit strategy would be.  I know there are some who would like to see him sell up, but honestly, the potential outcomes there are unedifying.  God save us from the ‘All we need to do is invest properly’, the debating society revolutionaries, or the ‘I can bring the club into the 21st century’ types.

  1. also in the future,

great grand-weans allthough being celtic supporters, will be able to go sit in their great granda billy’s debenture seat at ibrox, virtually polish the name plate, see their share certificates and pedal on the saint etienne bike.

and be awarded a deid trophy to a dead team, in a toilet, with refreshments from the bowl

The Ibrox cup-semi final riot was v St Mirren and we lost 0-2.

    The cup-tie v Eyemouth United was 3-1.

Round about that era we also beat Gala Fairydean 6-0 at home in the cup.

  3. Was at the riot game against St Mirren in the semi-final at Ibrox. Bob Kelly said he wouldn’t ask for a replay and conceded the game to St Mirren. We seemed to play St Mirren often in the Cup at that time. I think I remember a game at Celtic Park where both teams were clapped off the park (or maybe it was Third Lanark).

  4. Remembering the Ibrox riot v St Mirren and the emptying of the Celtic end at Hampden v Rangers in the 1963 Cup Final replay with 30 minutes to play tells me that Jock Stein’s arrival came just in time both on and off the park.

The long-suffering Celtic support really were starting to rebel after years of mediocrity at a time when unlike today, they really did have something to complain about.

I shudder to think where the support’s angst would have taken the club if Jock hadn’t become manager and changed the world forever.

We drew 4-4 at home to Third Lanark in the early 60s. Could it have been that game?

  6. First Celtic game was against Hibernian in Edinburgh 29th December 1956 .

3-3 draw ,Fernie was magical .Thank you Santa 😜

  7. Living in Toryglen both Cathkin and Hampden were close. My first recollection of attending a Celtic match was at Cathkin where we lost to Third Lanark. I remember they scored 4 and Bobby Evans played for us – I’ve searched Celtic wiki and it must have been October 59 – we lost

    2 – 4.

I was 9 years old and would have got a lift over.

  8. BILLYBHOY1967

The story goes that at half-time that day, Big Jock stormed into the dressimg room and shouted, “Whit’s the f****n score here?”

To which big Tam Gemmell said, “Four nothin tae Thistle.”

Gemmell didn’t appear for the second half.

  9. The technology already used in top class football is only the start of the AI revolution.

It’s potential is virtually unlimited , from determining potential superstars, coaching predicting / preventing injury and recovery to enhancing sports science.

Where will it end up. ? Instead of training machines, Machines will be all powerful, making

machines that will render humans redundant.

If you look at the advance of technology over the last few decades that that may be no exergeration.

The Samsung smartphone I am using to type this is millions of times more powerful than all the mainframes involved in the ” Moon landings. ”

In fact the images beamed into our homes to a gullible word were a good AI starter for 10.

The technological advancement of AI will not end well. Rogue machines will not be a horrific fiction.

This is probably the main reason why I no longer get too hung up about the politics of football. Res 12 et al.

Enjoyment of our team, the game as we know it is paramount to myself. Enhancement of our games via the match day experience is now my number 1 football focus.

Enjoy it while we have it.

Eat , drink and be merry for tomorrow ( Well who knows )

HH, May the odds be forever in your favour.

The enclosure where the front stand is now Celtic versus Slovan Bratislava popped into my mind

  11. BOURNE

Yes. I was at that game and cannot remember anything other than this was Celtic’s first European match and there was an awful lot of white shirted players on the pitch.

  12. I vaguely remember Celtic v Valencia and a tremendous save by John Fallon that sticks with me to this day.

  13. Tom McLaughlin,

It might well have been 4-4 v Third Lanark. The score is what I remember, along with the clapping of both teams. Made a change from the slow hand clap that sounded out fairly regularly at that time.

Apart from winning the likes of the Charity Cup, the first time I ever saw us winning anything was the 65 Cup, when Jock had just returned. To me, that is still the most important victory in my time watching Celtic. I doubt we would have Lisbon, if it weren’t for that victory.

  14. BOURNESOUPRECIPE

When Celtic returned from Bratislava after winning the 2nd leg 1-0 my dad took me to Celtic Park where a few hundred had gathered to cheer the team home. We were allowed toto the Celtic end and the players came out to receive the applause.

Looking back, it was quite bizzare.

  15. PARKHEADCUMSALFORD

Agree 100% on the significance of the 65 Cup Final. A magical day of magical memories.

  16. I was at a couple of games with my da in 61-62 but the first one I recall in some detail is Celtic 9 Airdrie 0, Oct-Nov 1963. Vividly remember the Celtic end shouting for Frank Haffey to take the penalty which would have made it 10. He skied it over the bar to big roars of laughter.. Having said that, I can’t remember any of the nine goals.

    RON BACARDI

Parkhead with the brightest lights we’d ever seen, never experienced anything like that before floodlit football was jaw dropping for a wee kid, – just taken for granted now.

  18. first game was a final Celtic 8 Clyde 0

cant remember much about the game apart from the sheer delight all around

was aged 8 what a baptism

  19. PHILBOY Regarding Roddy Sutherland there was a few brother’s here in Livingston one of them was called Roddy ,I only knew another brother called John,if i bump into John I’ll ask him about Garthamloch and his brothers

  20. On the JFK thing, the only thing that can be proved,is,your head being hit with a high velocity bullet from the front, goes backwards.Clearly evident in every film.Hit from behind, you go forward as he did when the first bullet,( The Magic Bullet),hit.

‘God save us from the…. ‘I can bring the club into the 21st century’ types.’

Were you holding a voodoo doll of Dominic Mckay when you wrote thar line?

Before Dom’s Liz-Truss length reign, many thought the club was crying out for fresh executive minds or methods. But today – naw… we’re fine as we are. Steady as she goes without any of they damned modernisers

Don’t misunderstand; I love how we totally boss it at home and our impressive cash surplus.

But this regularly a busted flush in Europe business is a riddy and needs a fresh look, shirley?

I’m praying that Brendan can get a Lenny like Lazio result next week.

    ——

Can’t recall my first game but one early one, with my uncle John from Dennistoun, was a minor or even reserve game. I think against Killie but I could beringue.

Pointing out a flame haired player in hoops, John said something like he was gonnae be a Sellik star or great. Occassionally he’d near burst his lungs singing along with the songbook. The player was a very young Tommy Burns. I was overawed by the experience – and my uncle. HH

  22. Tom McLaughlin,

The funny thing about the 4-1 game was that the adults around me (I was 10) were quite ok with going 0-2 as it meant the game would be exciting. At 0-3 one guy said “jings – Thistle are fair making a game of it. I hope big Jock knows what he’s doing (dropping Jim Craig)”. He obviously didn’t – as Thistle scored again!

  23. Read a great article tonight saying,Clement might sell Tik Tok to fund his rebuild across the City .

I will be spending more on Christmas presents if that’s the case.

Mc Causland will be the next £ 20 mullion player next year, watch our media.

  24. As I have said before,my first game was the 7-1 game,on my Fathers shoulders.Only remember the noise,celebrations,nothing else.Too young.The rest of my Cup memories when I did know,were sheer misery until 1965.Dunfermline,St Mirren(semi at Ibrox),Huns 1963.

  25. Some serious disorder in Dublin town this evening. Very serious. Not clear if it is linked, or if so how, to a very disturbing incident which took place in that very City earlier today. Might be. Vicariously. Either way caught the Garda off guard so to speak. Sometimes things can take a life and a momentum of their, think Rodney King, think Mark Duggan….Not good

  26. How on earth can you guys remember your first game.?

Factually recollections shift as we mature.

Genuine question, cause I cannot remember anything about my first game.

I do however remember the amazing European nights, the standing on beer cans and the general excitement. I even remember fondly queuing for tickets.

    HH,

  29. Celtic Mac,

It’s mainly tenage thugs. They are rioting and attacking the Gards and have set a Garda car and and a Luas tram on fire.

  30. Great show on BBC4 earlier, ‘An Adventure in Space and Time’ the story of how Dr Who came to pass. First shown on the 50th anniversary of the show, and with such a great cast, Brian Cox (the Scottish one albeit with a Donegal family history)as Canadian Sidney Newman, David Bradley, incredible as Bill Hartnell, and Jessica Raine as Verity Lambert. Strange thing but Dr Who is forever linked with the assassination of JFK in that the first episode, sixty years ago today, was shown the day after that most tragic event. Shortly after Celtic beat Kilmarnock 5-0 at Celtic Park. The first episode, overshadowed by the aftermath of JFK’s death, was actually repeated a week later, unheard of at the time. I often spin a yarn, to the most gullible of conspiracy theorists, asking the question, if Dr Who was shown on Saturday November 23 1963, where was he the day before? You need to rewatch the Zapruder film to find out the answer…

  31. Either on CQN or Sentinel Celts someone posted about difficulty negotiating turnstiles especially if depending on a walking stick.

If it was here can they contact the Celtic SLO via JPTaylor@celticfc.co.uk who can help you out.
