AGM, buys, refs and new reveal on ownership

153

Brendan Rodgers reclaimed some of his territory disputed by conspiracy theorists at yesterday’s AGM.  The manager explained how transfers worked at Celtic, insisting, “it’s really no different here to most clubs.”

The coaches identify the profile of players required, the scouts create a shortlist, and the manager makes the final decision.  Notions than Brendan would take a job under any other circumstances are for the fairies.

Refereeing standards are often raised at these occasions and yesterday was no different.  Michael Nicholson explained the club are in regular contact with the SFA over the issue and that there is a meeting today on the subject.

The biggest reveal of the day was from Ross Desmond, director and son of major shareholder, Dermot, who said, “My father grew up a huge Celtic fan. We don’t consider ourselves as shareholders, we are custodians.  In his lifetime and mine, we will not sell the club.”

We have never heard this intention before.  Dermot has been a major investor in the club for 29 years.  Now in his 70s, some of us wondered what his exit strategy would be.  I know there are some who would like to see him sell up, but honestly, the potential outcomes there are unedifying.  God save us from the ‘All we need to do is invest properly’, the debating society revolutionaries, or the ‘I can bring the club into the 21st century’ types.

  1. What is the Starz on

Dublin today….First the stabbing which was tragic but also involved great heroics by ordinary Dubliners who disarmed the knife man and then protected him from an angry mob until police came.Immediately the right wing crowd start stirring up things on social media encouraging people to “get out and fight ” and “stand up and protect women from foreign” type of nonsense. Ended up with Riots and looting..Chaos

Police held the line, but just about..Public transport stopped early, bars restaurants closed etc…

  2. What is the Starz on

One woman interviewed by RTE explaining she had just left the Stardust enquiry (taking place nearby) saw a man wielding a knife and stabbing people, ran towards him to help and then when he was disarmed, herself and another woman stood in front of him to protect him from the mob until the police arrived..because as she said “we are not savages”….That lady should be headline news tomorrow not the thugs and looters.

  3. What is the Starz on

The Stardust Enquiry by the way is an enquiry into a tragic fire in a disco in Dublin in 1981..

48 people, mainly teenagers died..including the aforementioned lady’s brother

  4. My first game was cup final replay defest against Clyde at Hampden.1955 I was 8, was 19 before I saw us win the cup in 1965. Seen a few since then.

First game at Parkhead was against Stirling Albion. Brother lifted me over the turnstile into the stand.

“You’ll need to pay for the boy”

Brother ” I don’t know who he is Jimmy, just let him in to see Celtic”

Me ” how did you know his name was Jimmy”?

    Little did I know.

My hero was Eric Smith because I read in the Record (B4 it went to the dark side) that he eat a raw egg every day to improve his fitness. My maw widnae let me try it.

  5. What is the Starz on

The Stardust was owned by Eamon Butterly,a friend of Taoiseach Charles Haughey.the first enquiry which was a sham and concluded that Butterly did nothing wrong (he was compensated handsomely) was presided over by Justice Ronan Keane husband of Haugheys mistress Terry Keane

  6. Good Morning – Grand Day To Be A Tim…

Don’t know all the ins & outs of the AGM but the videos and comments were very interesting.

It’s good to know, if indeed it will happen in practice, our Manager will have the final say on players now, it is key to squad building, player development and last but definitely not least first team performance.

Micheal Nicholson again talks of making us an elite Club, not exactly sure what that looks like at the moment but the domestic excellence and European prowess he alludes to is fine by me.

The investment priorities also look good…

    – Experienced, quality players

    – Barrowfield overhaul

    – Lennoxtown development

Twenty years overdue of course but very, very welcome.

Good vibe from Ross Desmond, hope he gets a higher input on the Board, would be really interesting to see how this fhellah does.

Parkhead with the brightest lights we’d ever seen, never experienced anything like that before floodlit football was jaw dropping for a wee kid, – just taken for granted now.

    ………………..

BEFORE Floodlights were ” Invented”, How did Fitba teams play their matches in the Dark WINTER Nights ?

    EASY….” They played the 2nd HALF….FIRST. !

  10. For Connaire

    For Info Lazio Away,

Just had a call from Celtic telling me that all Lazio tickets will be sent digitally to my mobile phone, and no other paper tickets will be sent

These will not be transferable and unless you have the QR code presentable at the gate,no one else will be able to use it

So just in case anyone who is looking for away tickets for this game, unless they are successful in the ballot, and are going there won’t be any spares.

    ==========

Connaire i hope this helps regards your query over tickets for the game Vs Lazio.

Chap seeing this went over and offered to buy them another meal – no they said we’re used to sharing. However he noticed that the woman wasn’t eating – so went over again and said that he noticed she wasn’t eating – are you sure you don’t want another meal – no she said we share everything and I’m waiting for him to finish with the teeth 😀

    Is it like the cassock?

    Hail Hail

  20. Thanks bhoys.

Seems it is – as GGH indicated – a soutane. Usually black, altar servers wore red yins.

All those years; never bothered to know or remember.

I think our priest(s) eventually allowed black Adi Sambas as well as sannies fae the wee drapers shop.

  21. CHAIRBHOY – kinda cassock like, but red. Never called a cassock where I lived.

Always told to clean and look after our soutanes and surplices.

His other classic was the one about the guy who lost his member in an accident.

Surgeon came round to talk to him about prosthetics available if he was prepared to go private.

Sizes, colours and materials were discussed with the most expensive being a 14 inch mahogany at 35 grand.

The guy says “since it is really for my wife’s benefit, i’’ll discuss it with her and go with what she wants. I’ll let you know after the visiting.

It’s the way I type them.

Surgeon comes back round and asks the guy if he had discussed it with the wife. “Aye,” says our hero, “she wants a fitted kiychen”.

  26. The final photograph is from one of the most notorious games ever played at East End Park, on Tuesday April 30, 1968.

Dunfermline had won the Scottish Cup for the second time in their history the previous Saturday and many fans wanted to see them parade the trophy at the end of this final league fixture against Celtic.

The gates were locked with 27,816 fans inside, many of whom had forced their way into the ground through the west gate or scaled walls to get in and who perched on top of the stands and on the floodlights throughout the game.

There were two stoppages, the crowd spilled onto the pitch after crush barriers crumpled and 49 people were injured.

Apparently the independent var review panel only found the following: Three VAR mistakes in Scottish Premiership revealed as dubious Aberdeen penalty and Dundee no goal deemed ‘incorrect’

Never knew it existed and assume they didn’t review any of our games 🙈🙉🙊
