Alan Thompson, scourge of the Rangers

438

If you’ve been on Celtic Quick News since the beginning you’ll know how high a regard I hold Alan Thompson.  In 2004 I called him the most influential Celtic midfielder since the Lisbon Lions.  His goal won us our first Champions League points, he scored the only goal of our two-legged Uefa Cup tie against Barcelona in 2004, he has scored two thirds of our competitive goals on German soil and his deliveries for Larsson, Hartson and Sutton were legendary.  His free kicks and corners always threatened.

He also punished Rangers more than any other midfield player in the last 40 years, scoring seven goals against them.

We have had many more skilful midfielders, but no one since the Lions came closed to making the impact of Alan Thompson in the games it really mattered.

We wish him well.

  1. Best Thommo goal

Thanks for the memories Thommo – so many good goals, deliveries and performances. The above is my favourite. I will also never forgot your goal in Stuttgart, I had a few bob then and liked a punt….. bet Celtic to win – gutted at the end but delighted the saver I had on Thommo for the first goal meant I broke even.

I will not speculate about the reasons, whatever they are I wish you all the best Thommo and hope to see you back in football in the future.

    HAIL HAIL

  2. Alan Thompson was a great player for us. He wasn’t without skill, but his main talent was being there when it counted and winning – a bit like Joe Ledley. Super Joe is a different type of player again, but he’s a winner and he likes skelping the Currant Buns.

  3. Great article Paul,

Im gutted to see thommo go, he gave me many joyous moments as a celtic fan, his right footed goal at ibrox in a 2-0 victory, my first visit to the piggery, a personal highlight, a true celtic legend, miss you already thommo

The clueless fishwife would be gutted to hear any good news about the ole Celts, like us winnin’ the League.

Anyways, off into Shangri -La with new Mr and Mrs D.Trucks live album on the ole stereo.

I guess if you’re christened ‘Derek Trucks’ then the only thing you can do in your life is play the guitar like ole Duane.

  5. Paul67 – agree with your points on Tommo – I wish him well.

Many important individuals have previously left Celtic Park (for a variety of reasons) and we have survived and moved on – am sure his departure will be no different.

Any idle speculation on our part will only keep the story live for the LL.

Sad to see Thommo go in the way he has!

I for one would like to know what happened between Thommo and Lenny that led to Thommo being sacked over the phone,,,such a sad sad way for a Celtic Great to go??

    Hail hail

  8. What a shame that thins appear to have ended messily for AT. A wonderful player and a real winner.

However, I think this might have been coming for a while…

If you read the Celtic statement you will know that the phone call took place as Alan Thompson didn’t attend a meeting arranged between him and Neil Lennon in Newcastle.

As for wanting to know the specifics, I think these things are better not known. Why should we be told the specific details, these things are for those involved to sort out, not us fans.

Good luck to the guy, but life and things change.

Some of my happiest times and memories were due to the skills of guys like AT.

That’s exactly right. Maybe it’s something that we have no need or business knowing.

  17. Paul67

Do you know the reason why he was sacked?

So many stories last season about leading players astray on trips away.
