Armageddon-SPL strong at the bottom

788

Dundee are nine points adrift at the bottom of the SPL but made a good fist of it against Celtic last night, after a rocky start.  They held their own for a good 30 minutes either side of the interval.  They are clearly the worst team in the league but they are a pretty decent worst team.  Armageddon-SPL is strong at the bottom end.

You and I know the Celtic support, as a group and to any statistically significant level, are vastly better behaved than any supporters of any other large football club.  This is a source of enormous pride but comes at a cost.  Over 20 years later you will still hear about fruit thrown by one idiot, I do.  This is a good thing.  It means that there has been little to talk about these past 20 years.

When you benefit from the greatest reputation in football you are held to the highest standards.  No one will blame Chelsea fans when we drop the ball.  I’ve heard no reports of damage or injury at Dens last night, but 20 years from now someone will tell you what was said by a representative of Dundee today.  This will be a good thing.

  1. Fess19,

I am no fan of Thatcher, but to call her a dictator is simply wrong. She was democratically elected three times (twice with three-figure majorities) – whether we like it or not she was popular with large sections of the British public.

On the Falklands, it’s true Britain missed clear signals that Argentina was going to pull a stunt of some sort, but I suspect this is more cock-up than conspiracy. Regaining the islands after they were invaded was a high-risk military manoevre, with the real possibility of failure and national humiliation. No way IMHO that Thatcher would have knowingly gambled in this way.

On this morning’s news… one wonders, however, why her correspondence with Jimmy Saville has been censored…

  2. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

So Maggie gave Sir Jimmy Savile half a million to continue abusing young lassies from Stoke Mandeville. Not making light of it but from the correspondence between the two, she was more of a pimp than a madam. From the correspondence the question arises did Sir Jimmy make a pass at her and from the subsequent reward ..did she like it ?

  3. Chairbhoy,

Militarily, the Falklands campaign was an impressive success. British forces were operating thousands of miles from home, supply lines were stretched, and the Argentinians were dug in. To retake a scattered archipelago with so few casualties was a considerable military achievement.

Poltically, it was a mess. Carrington resigned because the FCO missed the signals that an invasion was imminent. Nott resigned because he was not temperamentally cut out for the job of defence secretary in the cold war (see his infamous TV interview with Robin Day).

As for international support, Britain had plenty. But I would never use the UN as a barometer of morality in international affairs… (this is the organisation that had, until recently, Syria sitting on its Human Rights Council).

Britain’s post-war decline can be attributed to many things, but the Falklands is not one of them. Indeed, the country is a significantly wealthier and healthier place than it was in 1982, so the “decline” narrative needs to be placed in context.

  4. Awe Naw..

    Stalin????? Democratically elected? By whom?

Sorry, specious comparison. Thatcher may have been many things, but a genocidal, anti-semitic, dictator she was not.

  5. Maybe they are the same club after all…

FRAN SANDOZA last night revealed how he was advised on day one at Rangers not to cross himself before matches.

The Ibrox striker told a Spanish newspaper: “Am I a Catholic? I’m not talking about that. But is it strange to play for a Protestant club? That is not something football is concerned about.

“But on my first day the people at the club advised me not to cross myself before the start of matches. That helps to avoid misunderstandings but it is not a topic that bothers me much.”

    ì

But on my first day the people at the club advised me not to cross myself before the start of matches

    î

    Fran Sandoza

Sandaza also reveals in the interview that he considered returning to Spain during the summer, but clubs couldn’t match what Rangers were offering.

He said: “I wanted to see whether the door was open for me to make a return to Spain, and I got some offers from clubs. But once I saw what Rangers were offering me I stepped back from those clubs.”

I’d wholeheartedly agree with you on the need for facts as a foundation on which to build an understanding of any given incident.

Interestingly Thatcher paid tribute to Pinochet for his help in securing the war with Argentine. Pinochet as everyone will recollect was, like Thatcher, a less than benign leader of his people who used murder, torture and interment to uphold his authority.

Sometimes politicians find it expedient not to let facts get in the way.

Indeed, this morning I’m intrigued by what was redacted in the exchanges between Thatcher and Jimmy Saville – I hope I’m around in 10 years when they’re revealed.

  7. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

Ah now we are getting to specifics. I feel if I was to continue this debate with you. You would become more and more specific rather than the easily issued unanalysed soundbites. I wilk leave you to your very unspecific tub thumping and yes Technically Josef Stalin was democratically elected just like George Bush. For the record I was not impressed by the Falklands military operation and quite a few other aspects of your lazy analysis. I fear a series of repetive posts

Thatcher accepted the help of Pinochet and subsequently offered personal assistance to him.

We both know Pinochet was another fascist dictator whose military performed hideous acts against anyone who deviated from the anti socialist path.

As Churchill said: If the devil came out against Hitler,I would at least give him an honourable mention in the House of Commons.

  10. I’m sitting in Sydney watching the Melbourne Victory Newcastle Knights game on tv. A 21 year old Kiwi (attacking midfielder) called Marco Rojas has just scored a cracker and set up a second. Apparently he’s scored 8 and had 5 assists in the first 12 games and he’s out of contract at the end of the season. Someone should take a look at him

  12. Italiabhoy @ 08:52,

Your observations on the Military campaign are spot on – IMO.

It is stated today something we all knew, Mrs Thatcher did not know if this Campign could be successful.

She was perfectly prepared to take the huge risk that no Military tactician (all of whom would have known what was written in ‘The Art of War 3,500 years earlier) would undertake – such a leap in the dark, making it up as they went along unless it was a do or die mission.

It was a failure of intelligence, a failure of diplomacy, in all a failure of Government, it was for them and them alone a do or die mission. Briish Forces, Islanders and Argentiians life’s were risked to save the Conserative Government and Mrs Thatcher’s political life (btw they were deeply unpopular at the time.)

The exceptional bravery of exceptional men brilliantly trained saved the day and after that for a decade Mrs Thatcher could do know wrong, she circumvented her Cabinet including her talented Chancellor to ensure her extreme and wrong minded views and policies were implemented.

I was their, I watched the news and read numerous reports and opinions – I was not convinced by the spin at the time nor will I be now with revisionist commentary.

Things were far from perfect in the early eighties but we were a world power with signifiacant resources and huge potential, we are now a second division state struggling to keep our place.

When we are at the 50th anniversary we will be a third division country struggling to keep our place.

  16. From the FIFA website

    Rangers go under

    14 June

Rangers’ perilous financial position had been an open secret but there was still shock when, after 140 years of history and a world record 54 league titles, the club was consigned to liquidation in mid-June. The Glasgow giants were subsequently reformed as a new company and granted entry to the Third Division, Scotland’s fourth tier, which they currently lead by nine points with a game in hand.

  17. Good morning friends from a very wet and wild East Kilbride. Off to Mrs Baldie’s cousin’s wedding today (bet she’s delighted with the weather) but my turn for driving duties.

  18. Chairbhoy,

We are wealthier and healthier now than we were 30 years ago. That IMHO is more important than having 10 aircraft carriers and a standing army that could invade East Germany at three hours notice.

In the future, countries will be judged on how many opportunities they offer their citizens, how they support those who succeed, and protect those who fail.

In military terms countries like Britain, France, Germany, Australia, Japan etc will be insignificant. Each will be under a friendly military umbrella (in our case, the USA’s, or possibly the EU’s if it ever gets its act together).

The era of Britain being the predominant military power in the world ended sometime before 1914.
