Avoiding Bobo, Crown Office, Keyser Soze

653

Well done to Tony Hamilton and his team at Celtic Charity as well as the 60,000 participants for a memorable weekend which confirmed the spirit and heritage of the club.  It was great to see Martin O’Neill and Kenny Dalglish revel in, as well as so many of our more recent heroes, some of whom are aging better than others.

Credit also to the English Premier League players who turned up in such numbers, and who spent 85 minutes avoiding Bobo Balde, after Robert Pires ‘met’ the central defender early in yesterday’s game.  For all the array of talent on show over the weekend to prize goes to Carlos Cuellar, who spent £11k at the charity auction in the Kerrydale Suite on Friday night, the biggest donor by some distance.

The wee guy from One Direction looked terrified from the moment he first flicked his hair on the touchline, and he was on the same team as Bobo.  I’m sure he’ll recover quickly from his knock and enjoy telling the story for decades to come.

Henrik still has it, his movement was unmistakable but ‘Big Greenock’ looked like he was still 22.

The report by the Scottish Law Reporter yesterday that the Crown Office are in possession of material in which prosecutors refer to possible “discussions between former Police Officers employed by a media firm connected to Rangers FC and serving Police officers” moves the debate on recent well-publicised leaks onto a new level.

Charlotte Fakes has apparently been reported to police for inappropriately obtaining material.  While this has yet to be established, the act of reporting the content as being inappropriately obtained, had the unintended consequence of confirming the authenticity of the material.  All of which puts the content of said material under scrutiny.

Post-Leveson the media have been cautious on reporting Charlotte Fakes material without clear evidence that a crime had been committed by ‘victims’ of the leak.  If the Crown Office have now acted, parts of the media still independent may be emboldened.

With Charlotte Fakes now as easy to find as Keyser Soze the direction of the police investigation will be difficult to predict.

On the subject of booing players.

I remember being at Tom Boyds testimonial and David Beckham was roundly booed by the support when playing for Manchester United.

We were not in our usual seats and the whole bus was sitting together in the Jock Stein rear if I remember rightly. I couldn’t understand it to be honest. I never have understood booing any good player who comes to play at Paradise. I was the only one applauding when he came down our end to take corners. I want to see all the great players play at Celtic Park and if it is a friendly or testimonial I don’t see the point in booing.

Chris Sutton did give him a slap at OT. We played them so regulalry in those days maybe some people took it as a battle of Britain clash. Who knows?

Didn;t understand the booing of the wee boy from the boy band. He publicised the game massively and probably added to the crowd. Also a great PR excercise for the club that he pulled the Hoops on.

John Terry was probably booed for two reasons. He plays for Chelsea and his private life has been chequered to say the least. I think the booing of both players was light hearted and not nasty in any way.

I think most people attending wanted the team in Hoops to win even though it was a friendly and the other team were in the away jersey. It’s natural to want the Hoops to win. It’s our identity and our legends were in the Hoops. I think that had an impact. This was demonstrated when John Bishop stepped up to take the penalty and was booed by the crowd.

Just a question out of interest why didn’t Villa have more of an input to the game? That surprised me slightly. I thought that Stan’s XI may have had some sort of mock up Villa kit on. Do they have their own tribute for Stan organised or in the pipeline? Delighted to see the celebrities pull on the jersey and some great players too. Wish we had got Berbatov when we bought Stan I remember there were rumours at the time.

I think we have earned some new fans from the well known faces who turned out on Sunday.

A marvellous occassion and Tony Hamilton and his team deserve all the credit for putting it together. Stan Petrov is one of us and he must feel it now more than ever. Very emotional to watch him with his kids.

CELTIC legend Henrik Larsson has said he doesn’t rule out The Hoops’ chances of reaching the Champions League last 16 again this season.

The Scottish champions have been drawn against Barcelona, AC Milan and Ajax in the group stages this season and the former No. 7 believes teams visiting Glasgow face a tough task.

Larsson said: “Last season’s group was difficult and so is this one.

“Being realistic, you can see that it is a very tough group for Celtic.

“But nothing is impossible. The teams coming to Celtic Park are not going to enjoy it that much.

“It depends what they can get out of the games here and hopefully do something away from home – then you just never know.

“It was fantastic to watch Celtic do so well last season.

“Last season’s success will help them but they have lost a few players who were important to them.

“It’s time for the other guys to step in and try to have the same level as the other guys who have left.

“There was a wee smile when I saw Barcelona come out of the draw again, as they are two clubs who have been special to me in my career.”

Neil Lennon’s men beat the odds last season, progressing from a group that featured European giants Barca, Portugese side Benfica and Russian outfit Spartak Moscow.

They ultimately lost out in the next round to Juventus.

Larsson, 41, returned to Parkhead as part of a Celtic XI playing against a Petrov XI in a charity match on behalf of former Hoops midfielder Stiliyan Petrov who is in remission from acute leukaemia.

And the former Manchester United and Barcelona striker believes Petrov’s illness has brought an already tight-knit group of former team mates even closer.

Speaking of the match, Larsson said: “It was a great occasion,

“It was nice to see so many people turning out to sell out the stadium and give him a fitting tribute.

“The game wasn’t the most important thing; it was about being there for Stan.

“Stan was a big part of the group of players we had. We were very tight and still are.

“When something bad happens to anybody that is close to you and you shared so much with, it makes you tighter.

“It brings you closer together, it makes you realise that you are not immortal.

“Stan was fitter than most people so you see that it can happen to anyone.

“But it was fantastic to see that Stiliyan is getting better and better, and that is the most important thing.

“He was very happy and very emotional. It was a day he will never forget.”

Celtic begin their Group H fixtures with a trip to Milan on September 18.

First player I remember being booed was David Moyes, when I stood in the old jungle ….and that was when the teams were being announced. First I recall getting the ‘treatment’ was Kenny Dalglish during the Billy McNeill testimonial – he’d had a poor World Cup and made a slow start to the season but it seemed a bit much even to me as a 13 year old. Later in the same season Tom Callaghan was booed when he was brought on in an end of season game v Morton in thR season we lost the league for the first time in ten years. And later I recall every touch of Owen Archdeacon being met with groans during a match v DUFC which we lost.

When I played amateur football in the 70’s, I got to know Davie Moyes dad. A fine man who devoted his time to the amateur game. I was aware no allegiance from him or Davie towards any team apart from the one he coached or Davie played for.

Something else I haven’t heard in years is the Celtic support singing ‘Sailing’. Rod’s old hit and also a hit for Southern Brothers and Quiver before that. I was watching a Bundesliga game last week ( can’t remember which teams) and I’m sure I heard the fans singing it or a version of it in German.

I don’t know why we stopped singing it but I’d like us to bring it back. Another good song for a Celtic crowd to sing on big occasions.

My understanding was that the deid club fans sung it first in a YNWA style against us with scarves aloft and the bear silenced them by rattling in an equalizer mid song. I think less than a minute passed between their goal and ours I think.

Not my memory. Just something my old man told me. He ranks it as one of his favourite goals against Deidco.

I like David Moyes. I think the job he has done is remarkable.

On reflection, it may have been said in the press he wanted to play for them.

    Nonsense of course.

  25. to be honest , I was near a lot of the people booing John Terry and Louis T and there was nothing lighthearted or defensible about it. These guys did this for Petrov and his charity and some small minds got in the way. Thankfully the vast majority ensured it was a fantastic Celtic day with a great atmosphere and great memories
