Avoiding Bobo, Crown Office, Keyser Soze

653

Well done to Tony Hamilton and his team at Celtic Charity as well as the 60,000 participants for a memorable weekend which confirmed the spirit and heritage of the club.  It was great to see Martin O’Neill and Kenny Dalglish revel in, as well as so many of our more recent heroes, some of whom are aging better than others.

Credit also to the English Premier League players who turned up in such numbers, and who spent 85 minutes avoiding Bobo Balde, after Robert Pires ‘met’ the central defender early in yesterday’s game.  For all the array of talent on show over the weekend to prize goes to Carlos Cuellar, who spent £11k at the charity auction in the Kerrydale Suite on Friday night, the biggest donor by some distance.

The wee guy from One Direction looked terrified from the moment he first flicked his hair on the touchline, and he was on the same team as Bobo.  I’m sure he’ll recover quickly from his knock and enjoy telling the story for decades to come.

Henrik still has it, his movement was unmistakable but ‘Big Greenock’ looked like he was still 22.

The report by the Scottish Law Reporter yesterday that the Crown Office are in possession of material in which prosecutors refer to possible “discussions between former Police Officers employed by a media firm connected to Rangers FC and serving Police officers” moves the debate on recent well-publicised leaks onto a new level.

Charlotte Fakes has apparently been reported to police for inappropriately obtaining material.  While this has yet to be established, the act of reporting the content as being inappropriately obtained, had the unintended consequence of confirming the authenticity of the material.  All of which puts the content of said material under scrutiny.

Post-Leveson the media have been cautious on reporting Charlotte Fakes material without clear evidence that a crime had been committed by ‘victims’ of the leak.  If the Crown Office have now acted, parts of the media still independent may be emboldened.

With Charlotte Fakes now as easy to find as Keyser Soze the direction of the police investigation will be difficult to predict.

  1. Talking about Rod, I had to give up tickets for a Celtic v Deid FCC to see Rod.

My girlfriend at the time had tickets for the concert in Glasgow. It was cancelled and rearranged in Edinburgh a month or so later. Same night we were playing.

Could not get out of it, had to go to Edinburgh. Luckily Rod kept us all up to date with the score.

We won and had a great night.

We would sing Always Look On The Bright Side even when we were losing (as was often the case) and when the huns were running away with the title. We were abysmal around the time that song was popular.

Seems a decent sort Mr Beckham. He seems very down to earth even though he has made obscene amounts of cash.

He should have binned the Mrs when he missed training at Man Utd because he was watching his kids whilst she went off shopping though. I suspect ferguson was ultimately frustrated at his lack of ‘golden’ balls to deal with the situation and the argument which resulted in a boot striking his heid was the end of his career there. Ferguson struck me as a frustrated father figure who knew the boy had the world at his feet and blew what could have been a trophy laden career in football to chase the money and endorsements that his wife appeared to be the driving force behind. That is my opinon and I may be wrong but I don’t believe he ever wanted to leave Man Utd. Like I say though comes across as a very decent fella and a great footballer. Maybe not in the esteem that he is held in around the globe but certainly one of the best England have produced in the last 20 years.

Wee bit disappointed he was booed that night. Hopefully now he is retired he will be back at Paradise to sample the big match atmospshere and will be given a Celtic welcome. Great players should be lauded at Paradise. We are not anti football fans.

Sepp Blatter admits awarding Qatar the 2022 World Cup may have been ‘mistake’

The Fifa president wants the tournament to now be moved to the winter

Awarding the 2022 World Cup to Qatar may well have been “a mistake”, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said for the first time on Monday.

Staging the tournament in the Middle East has caused much controversy because if it is held over its traditional dates in the middle of the year, players will have to contend with searing 50 degrees Celsius heat.

Calls to move the World Cup to later in the year, during the European winter, have also been unpopular as it will cause major disruption to domestic league competitions in countries such as Spain, England, Italy, Germany and France.

Asked by insideworldfootball.com about awarding Qatar the tournament, Blatter said: “It may well be that we made a mistake at the time.”

Blatter, who in May said it was “not rational” to play in Qatar in June and July, added: “On the other hand, you must also consider political and geo-political realities.

“The World Cup is FIFA’s biggest, if not only, global event. Who are we, the Europeans, to demand that this event has to cater to the needs of 800 million Europeans above all?

“I think it is high time that Europe starts to understand that we do not rule the world any more, and that some former European imperial powers can no longer impress their will on to others in far away places.

“We must accept that football has moved away from being a European and South American sport – it has become the world sport that billions of fans are excitedly following every week, everywhere in the world.”

Blatter hopes FIFA’s executive committee will endorse his proposal to switch the tournament to the winter.

If such a move is rubber-stamped, the Swiss added: “The next steps will include a close look at the international calendar and to establish what consequences the change would have.

“We would naturally need to speak to and consult with all interested parties and stakeholders.”

Qatar defeated bids from South Korea, Japan, Australia and the United States to win the right to host the tournament for the first time.

That’s correct. My old man was over for that game and came back totally blootered signing that song. he had managed to buy me a knocked off new Hoops. My first in years in the pub after returning from Belgium. He got it for £10 which had clearly been swiped from a Livingston Sports shop. It was a good jersey but had the horrid Peoples emblazoned across it and I wore it even though it was miles too big for me.

They had a cake they handed out to the crowd because I may be wrong but it was their first ever match at home in European competition. Terry Cassidy came round to the Celtic support and my old man got a hold of his hand through the fence to shake it and wouldn’t let go and talked some Celtic ramblings in his ear for a good five mins.

Also during the game my old man picked up a drunk guy who was lying on a flag and helped him watch the game. Big Mick Galloway who drank in the Vaults in West Calder in those days scored a screamer and my old man let drunk guy go to celebrate only to turn round and see the Bhoy being carted away by the ambulance crews as he had fell over and got a bit of a sore one on the terracing!

Celtic face potential boost from AC Milan injuries

CELTIC could face a significantly-weakened AC Milan side in their Champions League group matches with the news that the Rossoneri are now missing three key defenders.

Vice-president of the club Adriano Galliani has insisted that the Italian side have the depth in squad to overcome the injury setbacks, but warned: “We have to make sure we do not lose confidence.”

20-year-old full back Mattia De Sciglio is expected to be out of action for at least two months as he undergoes knee surgery in the next few days, while Argentinian centre back Matias Silverstre – on loan from city rivals Inter Milan – has also been sidelined.

The latest headache for Milan is the news that Ignazio Abate – Italy’s first choice right back – is to undergo tests after sustaining a muscle injury while on international duty.

And experienced stopper Daniel Bonera is still recovering from a fractured kneecap.

However, Galliani is unfazed by the setbacks, earmarking potential stand-ins for the missing quartet. Speaking to AC Milan’s official website, the vice-president said: “When we get injuries, we are unlucky because we tend to get them not only in the same line but in the same positions.”

“Abate and De Sciglio are the full-backs of the national team but we are able to overcome this setback.”

Galliani suggested that midfield duo Cristian Zaccardo and Andrea Poli are capable of filling in.

Celtic last faced the Rossoneri in 2007, winning 2-1 at Parkhead but losing 1-0 in Italy.

That away game in Ekeren was meant to be my first overseas trip to follow the Hoops. Sadly, my first teaching placement as a student coincided with it and I lost my deposit for the coach, two nights in Amsterdam and an overnight in Belguim.

  18. We shouldn’t gloat too soon about AC Milan having a weakened squad.

Our players still have international fixtures to play and more importantly domestic games where our referees seem to have a liberal interpretation of the rules on fouling when Celtic play.

We might be without more key defenders than AC and with fewer subs.

A great trip by all accounts. I was only a Bhoy at the time. Maybe 13 or 14. No danger I would be allowed to go. It was a 1-0 away victory in Europe and we didn’t get many of them in the 90’s.
