Balance returning, Magnificent effort

1052

After a tenacious win in Paisley on Friday Celtic were back in the groove last night.  Passing was swift and accurate, movement – perpetual.  It was a quiet game for Kris Commons, which at an earlier time would have meant a game with few chances for Celtic, but the prodding of Johansen, Armstrong and Mackay-Steven ensured Thistle played much of the game trying to chase shadows.

The return from injury of two of our three right backs, Adam Matthews and Darnell Fisher, has given the team better balance, although Adam still looks to be finding his sharpness.

John Guidetti established his early season reputation against Thistle with a League Cup hat trick but that seemed like a lifetime ago last night.  The striker had the odd chance but the terror he inspired in defenders a few months ago has gone.

Enormous thanks to winning bidder for our Open Golf Championship Hospitality competition, which finished a moment ago raising £2050 for our School Kitchen project for Mary’s Meals in Malawi.  Thanks to Eden Mill Distillery and Brewery in St Andrews and all who participated.

It was a stunning effort and the money is now in place to complete the fourth CQN school kitchen!  Well done to all who played their part.

Celtic sponsor, Magners, who have helped from the beginning of this recent school kitchen project, have a competition to play at Lennoxtown and Celtic Park.  You can enter your 7-a-side team into the Magnificent 7s competition before 5pm Wednesday 15th.  It would be good to see CQN represented.  Qualifying round takes place at Lennoxtown on Sunday 26 April with the finals at Celtic Park.

Did you know that on this day in 2003, Celtic drew 1-1 with Boavista

Match Report, courtesy of Celtic Mad.

Henrik Larsson squandered a late penalty kick as Celtic’s bid to reach their first European final for 33 years remains in the balance.

Boavista goalkeeper Ricardo, after Eder had handled an Alan Thompson shot, superbly saved Larsson’s 76th-minute kick.

The Swedish striker had earlier struck the equaliser for Celtic who had fallen behind early in the second half to an own goal from Joos Valgaeren.

Boavista defended in depth but also looked dangerous on the break in a keenly fought contest that saw four of their players booked in a torrid 15-minute spell in the second half.

The Portuguese were much the happier with the draw but Celtic have already proved in the UEFA Cup that they can produce unlikely results away from Glasgow.

Celtic stamped their authority on the game from the start and John Hartson fed Larsson with an intelligent through ball but the angle was too tight and the chance was lost.

The Scottish champions had two strong penalty claims turned down in the first quarter of an hour when the ball struck the hands of Filipe Anunciacao and then Fernando Avalos, but the Belgian referee Frank De Bleeckere was unimpressed.

For all their possession, Celtic did not trouble Ricardo in the Boavista goal in the first half and too often the final cross into the area was poor.

The Portuguese side had a couple of chances themselves with Brazilian striker Duda shooting against Bobo Balde from good position and Luiz Claudio trying his luck from distance.

Celtic Park was stunned three minutes after the break when Boavista snatched the lead when Anunciacao crossed and Valgaeren touched the ball past his own goalkeeper.

Celtic’s response was immediate with Petrov cushioning a Neil Lennon cross into the path of Larsson who drilled the ball past Ricardo.

The game opened up after that and Robert Douglas produced fine diving save to keep out a 20-yard free-kick from Luis Pedrosa after Lennon had given away a free-kick.

Hartson should have scored after 73 minutes but Ricardo brilliantly saved his low shot from six yards.

Then came Larsson’s penalty miss and Hartson was unfortunate not to give Celtic a victory when his 85th-minute shot was blocked on the line by Paulo Turra.

I know we all presume that, but until I’ve seen some concrete evidence for that, I’m going on the basis that it’s still owned by the club. The mysterious outgoing £278k may be for something else – what I don’t know – but as far as I’m aware nobody has shown in black and white that it’s rental.

Rangers 5 game unbeaten run came to an end last night. In other news Stuart McCall has only gained 9 points from a possible 18.

Celtic meanwhile have only been beaten twice this calendar year.

  9. SFTB

My core point was twofold, firstly that DD may well have justification in thinking that individuals using the term Radio Shortbread may well be having a dig at Scotland per se. Granted the term itself, in isolation, doesn’t in itself inflict major insult but it depends in what context it is used when read in conjunction with the rest of the post in which it was embedded.

Who is qualified to determine another’s right to inference?

On a wee aside I recall Paul67 in one of his articles telling us that he did not like the term ‘the best wee country in the world’. He found it insulting. Likewise, as above, as words in isolation it could easily be interpreted as a compliment but most often than not the diametrical is the case. Sometimes I found it insulting whilst the same term being used by another, on another day, I found to be quite depressing, but fair, criticism.

Secondly when micro-analysing a post the micro-analyser has no right to conclude in the plural, no matter who he is or what name he posts under. An opinion is just an opinion but when it is expanded to include the inference of the meaning, or meanings, of others thoughts, well I think that crosses the border into mentalist country.

Although unrelated to my original post, one thing I do find off putting to the point of abandoning these pages, and again it crept into discussion last night, is the continual sniping back and forth between the Yes and the No wings. We boast a democratic country, the people voted, the votes were counted and the result declared. End of. Understandably it was a very emotive period of time in Scotland’s history and people were on major highs or lows depending on their personal vote preference, but that’s democracy, live with it. I have no time for the yes/no card being nastily, and repeatedly, played into issues which predate the vote by a century or more and I’ve no time for posters using the result as a weapon when trying to point score of others on unrelated subjects, whether said poster does so under the guise of humour or not. I find it rather disturbing and possibly a sad barometer of what the near future holds for Scottish society in general. Democracy is good as long as the vote goes my way???

This is a football blog, I really don’t see any relevance to the outcome of the vote and issues pertaining to the Celtic world.

“but as far as I’m aware nobody has shown in black and white that it’s rental.” …..if ipox WAS owned by the club, believe me, the deeds would have been ‘produced’ by now …….the ongoing investigations are the attempts to wrestle the deeds from Green or White ……. Always remember that Michael was prevented from gaining ipox as security for one of his loans because the ownership was being contested in court ….. There’s more to come out on this one…….

An interesting spin on a price rise.

We should be reducing prices and trying to encourage more to attend games. The half empty stadium for almost every game suggests the current pricing is wrong.

    !BADA BING!

Surprised at the wording of that, given the source. I genuinely thought the DR would have highlighted the increase from this season rather than a reduction on 2011 prices.

Good way to look at it is that the saving over the past three seasons is half of the ticket cost for 2011. So mustn’t grumble. The tickets are still being discounted whichever way we look at it.

I use this term in reference to BBC Radio Scotland. Primarily it’s a dig at their poor coverage of Scottish football and their often narrow viewpoints and range of pundits. There are some diamonds amongst the glaur: Jim Spence and Richard Gordon provide balance, knowledge and integrity in sharp contrast to the comedic figures of Chic Young and Kenny McIntyre. It’s still my port of call for Scottish football though as I gave up on the commercial channels long ago.

Somewhere in my befuddled brain though I’m having a dig at Robbie Shepherd and his Highland music/dance show.Travelling home from Aberdeen or Dundee on the supporters bus, the day’s enjoyment was compromised for a few minutes at the back of six when the football finished and the opening torturous screeches of some Highland jig attacked our ears…quickly followed by a ‘polite’ instruction to the convener to, “Get that sh*** aff!”

No big political point from me and I’m sure a fanzine used it years ago anyway.

Right, what the heck has happened to RES 12 ?…… The last we heard, it was progressing….that was ages ago, and I get the distinct impression it’s being brushed under the same carpet as BDO and the HMRC appeal ……what is going on, CELTIC Board ?….I can understand that you are charged with managing CELTIC, and not with going to war with the Scottish Football authorities and / or sevco….BUT……you did take Auldheid, Canamalar etc into your confidence , stating that you were dealing…..THAT was a year ago…..!!??

Ye see, the Celtic board brought in a new manager and, charged him with the responsibility of, getting the club into the CL group stages…he failed…twice!!

Where I would cut RD some slack….Celtic’s biggest weapon for getting into the CL…a packed Celtic Park…roaring the team over the line…imho

RD, was denied the use of the biggest weapon coz…the Celtic board…prostituted the stadium that, you and I paid for and built…to be used for the British Establishment’s Commonwhealth Games…all for £5 million with the Celtic fans being fecked aboot…trying to get to Murrayfield in time for the game…but, the board blew the chance of £20 million CL-money coz of their greed…who took the fall for that?…..nobody did…know why?…coz, Celtic PLC are a rudderless-ship…run by absentee toffs…Thatchers children run Celtic FC….they arent…inept / incompetent…no, they are…B#STARD’s…of the highest order.

Anybody who cant see through the Celtic board….if there’s a God?…I hope he loves you.

    ……oot.

So that’s a £50 rise on season books or roughly 12.5% with the spin that we have been getting a ‘discount’.

This (£100 discount) has ‘cost’ about £4m a year, so the rise should generate a further £2m (about the cost of the Board and the CEO).
