Benfica, Celtic and a world record

223

I doubt there has ever been a series of home games in our history as concentrated as what lies ahead for Celtic. We have three in the next eight days, kicking off a series of nine at home in the next 12 league fixtures.

I know what you’re thinking, the fact that we’ve played nine away and only five at home explains our poor start to the league campaign, but all that should now correct itself….. Form this season is comparable only to season 2003-04, when after drawing a blank in the opening game away to Dunfermline, Celtic won 25 consecutive league games.

That run came to an end when Henrik Larsson was rested for the start of the visit of Motherwell. We had just beaten Barcelona and were on our way to a 0-0 draw in the return game. At the time the draw didn’t matter much but it left Celtic four games short of the world record, achieved by Eusabio’s Benfica. Since then Dinamo Zagreb eclipsed the Celtic record but fell one short of Benfica’s.

World records are not easy to break, Celtic would need to win every game between now and the split in April simply to match Benfica’s 29 game winning run (would be an appropriate reward for those who’d travelled to Dingwall for the game).

If we win all 12 of the coming fixtures dominated by home games, Celtic will be third and fourth in the world record consecutive league game winning list.  Impossible. Right?

Let’s worry about Hamilton Accies tomorrow and see what the players can achieve thereafter.

When I was a young bhoy, we used to chant SEVEN, SEVEN, SEVEN. Another great chant was CEL TIC CHA CHA CHA. My memory (may well be wrong) is that most of the singing started in the Celtic End in the 50s and 60s. Again, I think the make up of the Jungle changed sometime in the 70s. Mind you, in those days, you could wander around from end to end of the ground and some people did exactly that.

Just for clarity and repeating previous, I have seen the tender for safety netting at ibrokes, the work to be carried out beginning January. Only down date, now confirmed, is if they get a home cup draw.

    This is fact!

Glad you came back on mate to verify what you posted earlier. Now we have some people on here telling us nets are standard procedure !!!!!.On what fekin planet. As I said earlier, yes nets are perfectly acceptable for work being carried out.with the workers wearing hard hats. Not for people standing in the vicinity, especially underneath.Safety Certificates? Please read James Forrest post on these. All the grounds that have had disasters had a valid safety certificate.Thr Huns one was granted in July.We know the roofas are probably now perilous, but some on here very willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

I will say again.Any roof of a football stadium that needs nets, wether for maintenance or not,is not a fit place for spectators. But heyho, you put your trust in Dave King, and the lying sleekit ways he goes about his business dealings.

This was the chance to nab them. Not through Celtic as everyone keeps harping on about, but by us.Dont take their tickets.Let the watching world know why.

As for the problem with a home cup draw, they are due an away fixture. I’m sure the luck of the draw will help them!

The 1902 Ibrox disaster was caused by the collapse of a stand, which led to the deaths of 25 supporters watching a Scotland v England football game.. 517 supporters were injured.

*deidco offered their Empire Exhibition Trophy up for the British League Cup to raise money for this disater , it was an invitational only tournament involving the winners and runners-up of the Scottish and English football leagues.

The competition took place in Glasgow with the semi finals at the disaster ground ??? . A reply between deidco and Everton took place at Parkheid.

The final took place at Cathkin where we won 3–2 against the owners of the dilapidated stadium aet.

We were then surprised at the end of the season when deidco’s directors arrived to take back the cup. Celtic believed they were the rightful owners after winning the cup fairly in a properly organised competition.

Lawyer’s letters were sent back and forth between the clubs with both clubs claiming ownership. Rumour has it that letters were still received by Celtic from the former sevco demanding that they give the cup back over a century later.

Interestingly, the cup is engraved “Won by Cheating Bassa FC” and is on display in the Celtic Trophy Room.

Good Morning Celts…hoping for yet another victory tonight.I really would love if Celtic had something planned to celebrate the Lisbon Lions that involved Celtic Park being the venue for us to show our love and appreciation to our greatest ever team.As i suggested earlier the club could charge a modest admission fee with all profits going to the Celtic foundation or Mary’s meals and similar deserving causes. That would be an occasion i for one would love to attend.
