Benfica, Celtic and a world record

223

I doubt there has ever been a series of home games in our history as concentrated as what lies ahead for Celtic. We have three in the next eight days, kicking off a series of nine at home in the next 12 league fixtures.

I know what you’re thinking, the fact that we’ve played nine away and only five at home explains our poor start to the league campaign, but all that should now correct itself….. Form this season is comparable only to season 2003-04, when after drawing a blank in the opening game away to Dunfermline, Celtic won 25 consecutive league games.

That run came to an end when Henrik Larsson was rested for the start of the visit of Motherwell. We had just beaten Barcelona and were on our way to a 0-0 draw in the return game. At the time the draw didn’t matter much but it left Celtic four games short of the world record, achieved by Eusabio’s Benfica. Since then Dinamo Zagreb eclipsed the Celtic record but fell one short of Benfica’s.

World records are not easy to break, Celtic would need to win every game between now and the split in April simply to match Benfica’s 29 game winning run (would be an appropriate reward for those who’d travelled to Dingwall for the game).

If we win all 12 of the coming fixtures dominated by home games, Celtic will be third and fourth in the world record consecutive league game winning list.  Impossible. Right?

Let’s worry about Hamilton Accies tomorrow and see what the players can achieve thereafter.

  1. Ibrox has a safety certificate. If whoever signed that off, knowing that it was not fir to be so, they’d be putting themselves in the position of being criminally prosecuted, and professionally ruined. Would somebody do that for them?

There is a world of difference between remedial work needing done at some point and remedial work being required as a matter of urgency. How likely is it the Ibrox roof would go from a to b in a matter of weeks? Not that likely I would think, unless the surveyor is seriously incompetent and once again putting themselves in an actionable position.

Is the source of this urgent work needing done rumour the same that told people they’d been tapping water off a church?

From a source I trust implicitly Andy Smilie HAS NOT put up scaffolding at Mordor.

Over an above that, £250K of scaffolding could not be hidden. Direct quote “That’s enough scaffold to hold up the Forth Bridge”.

Good luck to our development squad tonight against Hamilton in what’s their first scheduled domestic league game since before Halloween.

This squad have taken their lumps in the uefa youth league this season (5 defeats, horsed in four of them, and 1draw), so I hope they get a bit of support from Greenock Celts and a few others as they start the seven games in hand catchup.

SIR Rod Stewart is set to tease his Rangers-loving fans by not only beaming his beloved Celtic’s goals during their 5-1 Old Firm victory on a screen at his SSE Hydro gigs this week, which he had done at every gig, but he will also additionally show Craig Whyte´s victory speech on the doors of Ibrox after he bought Rangers for a pound in a move that is sure to antagonise.

The rocker, 71, has already shown the 5.1 footage as he sang his hit You’re In My Heart at his previous shows in Belfast, Dublin, Liverpool and Prague.

Moussa Dembele’s hat-trick, and strikes from Scott Sinclair and Stuart Armstrong secured the Hoops win during the September clash at Celtic Park.

The Maggie May star attended the derby and was caught in the crowd doing the huddle with fans.

The Glasgow shows tomorrow and Friday will be the second last stop on the singer’s 18-leg From Gasoline Alley to Another Country European tour.

Rod also uses drum kits with the club’s four leaf clover crest emblazoned on them as he performs.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland stated “He can project any image as long as it is with the confines of the law and common decency. What he can´t do and it will not be tolerated is to celebrate with the crowd. We will be keeping a close eye on this and have asked Craig Thomson to attend just in case”

The Safety Certificate for Ibrox is a Public Document and should be available for inspection by anyone.

It is granted with or without conditions and the Safety Advisory Group will make recommendations along with the Local Authority on any conditions attached to it.

If there were conditions attached then the Local Authority would have to check and verify any work had been completed.

I agree with WEEMINGER; I cannot see any Safety Official from Glasgow City Council putting fans lives at risk; putting their professional career in jeopardy; or facing the prospect of serious jail time if caught by issuing a dodgy Safety Certificate. The SAG would also need to be involved and complicit along with a significant number of employees at Ibrox. If that can of worms had been open then it would need to involve up to 20 people to keep it secret!

THE message is one game at a time. Two must now become three, four must become five, five must become six, maybe a hard fought draw and then six and a half must become seven and a half draw for Rangers.

It is a feat that Mark Warburton’s side have yet to achieve this term but one that they will have to accomplish if the feel good factor is to be maintained and feeling good is important.

Defeat at Tynecastle last month was another step back for Rangers but massive strides forward have been taken on successive weekends.

The Light Blue legions have been sent home happy but only further successes will ensure that there is festive cheer around Ibrox.

The win over Aberdeen proved a point and was the ideal response to a performance and a result that had piled the pressure on Warburton and his players.

On Saturday, the Gers followed it up in style. The approach was similar, the result just as significant and the show boating even better as Hearts were soundly beaten at Ibrox.

Spectacular goals in either half from Rob Kiernan and Barrie McKay – the first a towering header as the defender opened his account in Light Blue and the second a neat finish that capped a fine individual display – were enough for Rangers to clinch a deserved victory.

It was not the start to life as Jambos boss that Ian Cathro had in mind but it could have been a debut to forget for the 30-year-old bu tthe result was never in doubt. Rangers settled for two goals and three points but the margin could have been greater if the hosts had wanted to be more clinical in the final third.

Rangers left Tynecastle having been on the end of one of the worst refereeing performances of the season under the Warburton era but have altered their approach to change their fortunes.

The Gers were once again more direct in their play on Saturday and this time it was Hearts who were outfought and well beaten. Warburton’s side won the physical battle and then let their silky football do the talking.

It was Jason Holt who took home the man of the match champagne and he would have needed a drink after a tireless performance that saw him cover every blade of grass in midfield. Having been on the periphery at times this term, he was central to the action here.

At opposite ends of the park, Kiernan and McKay were also in the running for the honours, their goals well deserved rewards for accomplished showings that earned high praise from their manager.

This was a more refined display from Warburton’s side. The phases of passing and movement that are the hallmark of the Englishman’s philosophy were still evident, but Rangers were able to mix it up when required.

Joe Garner provided the focal point for the attack and his efforts were appreciated by the Ibrox crowd, the standing ovation he received for not scoring were more than merited. The striker once again failed to find the net, but his running and combativeness in the air were just as important for Rangers.

Too often this term Warburton’s side have been on the end of poor decisions and left supporters frustrated but the crowd have responded to the more direct and high tempo style in the last two fixtures. A new benchmark has now been set which will now give Brendan Rodgers sleepless nights.

The three games against their nearest challengers for the best of the rest spot were always going to be crucial for Rangers and six points is a return that many would have accepted before a ball was kicked in Gorgie.

Having delivered two blows to their rivals with two convincing wins, Rangers now have a chance to extend their advantage in the coming weeks.

A trip to Hamilton is next on the agenda on Friday evening before a home clash with Inverness and meeting with St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park either side of Christmas. The countdown will then begin to the Old Firm Hogmanay showdown.

The run up to the Celtic game is one that Rangers shouldn’t fear but they must prove that their endeavours against Aberdeen and Hearts can become the norm and are not the exception this term while disposing of Celtic at Ibrox

When Warburton’s side beat Dundee and Motherwell at the start of the campaign, they faltered on their next outing as they were held by Kilmarnock.

BMCUWP, someone is making mischief; it may be JJ or it may be someone else. A quick recce at Mordor has confirmed no scaffolding is evident.

    No they couldn’t.

Is there a precedent? Most of the legislation has been in place as a result of Bradford and Hillsborough? I’m not aware of any major stadium incidents since then, but if there have been and it was shown that regardless of the circumstances the issuer of the certificate couldn’t be brought to court, then I’m happy to be corrected.

ironically enough The Safety at Sports Grounds Act (1975) was put in place after the Ibrox Disaster in 1971 and the subsequent Public enquiry; and the Fire safety and Safety of Places of Sports Act (1987) was enacted after the Popplewell Inquiry into Bradford City stadium fire. The Green Guide (Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds) was also updated as a result of Popplewell. (Both were in place prior to Hillsborough).

These govern how Safety Certificates are issued and the guidance for enforcing them. It MUST be a qualified Safety Officer who issues the Safety Certificate; so personal responsibility lies with the Safety Officer and Corporate responsibility with the issuing body, Glasgow City Council.

The Rangers Board and the Responsible Person (the one who requested the Safety Certificate) also have legal responsibility. Any wrongdoing uncovered here would, in historical context, see (IMHO) massive jail terms meted out to anyone breaking the law in these circumstances.

And we know they couldn’t pay enough money in bribes to get all those people involved to do it!

  19. Although I don`t like to see Celtic lose, I am actually pleased with the CL Group Stages outcome. In the main, we performed well enough but the quality of our group meant we are out of Europe. That, I believe, is a good thing at this stage of Project Brendan. After this month, we will be on a `normal` schedule and that will surely be good for the further development of our squad? We have the opportunity to become a very smooth and well functioning team in preparation for the CL Qualifiers next year.

All in all, therefore, I am quite comfortable with our European exit. I am also really looking forward to seeing my team tomorrow night.

  20. Weeminger,

Someone on here has verified that in January, there will be netting of some description in the Ibrox stands. If this sounds to you like a measure that would satisfy H and S anywhere,I would be amazed.I would only imagine this scenario,if the Stadium was not in use,and was being readied for renovation.

Unless of course, the poster on here is lying, and has not seen the invoices.

I cant remember the investigation after the Ibrox disaster, can you?.As far as I can remember there had been many warnings beforehand.Of course, like the poster with the invoices,I could be wrong.

  21. OK,for now I will say no more on the Ibrox roofs. In January,February though,if I see any form of netting anywhere near these roofs,I will get back to you.

  22. TURKEYBHOY on 12TH DECEMBER 2016 2:48 PM

Netting might be required simply to prevent work materials falling. That’s totally common on elevated work.

I’m not saying work doesn’t need done. I’m suggesting that it’s not yet at the roof falling in stage whereby fans would be in danger. If it’s left undone, that’s a totally different matter.

Or to put it another way. I’ve just had my car serviced. The authorised mechanic has stated that there’s wear on the brakes but they’ll be fine until March at current deterioration rate. If I was to crash and it was proven that the breaks were actually far more worn than he stated I’d be taking him to court.

The only thing that might throw all of the above into doubt would be the regularity with which the survey is required. So if it was only say every 3 years then I suppose they could have deteriorated markedly in that time. Here’s the thing though. If a surveyor did find that immediate action was necessary, I’d imagine he’d be required by law to make the council aware of it (and insurers), and not doing so would be criminally negligent.

Happy to be wrong on this, but as yet, there’s nothing concrete to show we should be getting our knickers in a twist over it.

    the roof is in disrepair.

there is no handsomeness to be found

  30. Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 Ibrox Stadium

I refer to your letter of 12 July 2016 and concerns raised by correspondents to your office regarding the safety of Ibrox Stadium.

I can advise that the Club’s annual structural survey was completed in March of this year. At this time engineers observed that the metal cladding on the roof was beginning to show signs of water ingress and that some of the internal metal structure was in need of painting. Your own technical staff, I am sure, will confirm such findings are not uncommon in buildings of this age and type. A plan is in place to effect repairs to the roof over the coming months while the stadium painting programme has been adjusted to include the areas highlighted in the survey. It is important to stress, and for the avoidance of doubt, no structural or safety concerns were raised in the survey.

The Chairman’s comments about the stadium being neglected and a requirement for significant maintenance works to be carried out is a factual reference to the failure of previous regimes at this Club to continue to invest in its main assets over the past few years. Typically this included the abandonment of the annual painting programme and all scheduled refurbishment of hospitality suites and concourses. These are matters now being actively addressed by the new Board. In summary, none of the outstanding works planned, or that are already underway, affect the “P” Factor and Ibrox Stadium continues to provide for the reasonable safety of spectators as required by the Green Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds.

If I can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

    yours sincerely
