Best of luck Brendan and thanks for the trebles

914

If I’m being magnanimous, Brendan made no secret of the fact that he wanted to return to the English Premier League.  When he was here, he won everything available to him domestically and proved that you can please all of the people all of the time.  We want managers to be ambitious, honest and successful and that’s what we got.

It rankles that his timing was so poor, a day before we visit Tynecastle on league duty and five days before we visit Easter Road in the Cup.  Brendan saw little compensation in Moussa Dembele’s success here, or ambition, when he engineered his exit at a bad time for the manager, the same is true now.  Celtic knew nothing of this before yesterday and have a major job on their hands to ensure the quest for the treble treble remains on course.

Neil Lennon is likely to be announced as interim manager.  We are fortunate to have as an experienced hand available.  If anyone knows how to take a Celtic team to Edinburgh, it’s Neil.  Plans for next season will continue in the background, but Neil will be asked to deliver the treble and nothing will be allowed to distract him or the players from that objective.

I have heard from a few CQN’ers who are surprised today, but we should know better.  This is football, managers and players are highly paid professionals, all the badge thumping in the world does not change that.  Exceptions are rare.

Best of luck to you, Brendan, and thanks for the trebles.  You could have held out for better than Leicester, but there’s every chance you’ll keep them in the division for many years.

  7. In other news, the greed of modern football knows no bounds: ?

Willie McKay is facing serious new questions over the death of Emiliano Sala following the findings of an official report into the plane crash that killed the striker.

A special bulletin on the tragedy published by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) on Monday indicated the pilot who flew Sala, Dave Ibbotson, would only have been allowed to do so had the pair shared the cost of the trip between them.

McKay, who helped broker Sala’s £15 million transfer to Cardiff City from Nantes, confirmed last month he organised the flight in question and that his usual pilot, Dave Henderson, had paid the landing fees and fuel.

He went further in an exclusive interview with the Daily Telegraph last week in which he said his own agent son had “paid for” previous private-jet trips related to the sale of Sala to the Premier League club.

But McKay did not respond to requests for comment on whether he knew if the cost of the player’s January 21 journey over the English Channel had been shared with Ibbotson, who died with £23,400 worth of county court judgments against him.

That was after the AAIB confirmed the part-time gas engineer did not possess a commercial licence, only a private one, which prevented him carrying passengers for reward.

According to Monday’s report, Ibbotson could have legitimately flown Sala on what is called a “cost-sharing” basis, an exemption used by pilots to reduce the cost of gaining flying experience by splitting travel expenses with any passengers.

Were those rules deemed to have been broken, it could have serious consequences for the McKays and Nantes – for whom they were acting – with Cardiff stood ready to launch a negligence claim against them.

McKay has repeatedly insisted he had nothing to do with choosing the pilot, claiming he asked Henderson to make the necessary arrangements. Henderson has yet to make any comment on this.

But one aviation expert told the Telegraph it would still have been “totally negligent” of McKay if Ibbotson was shown to have been insufficiently qualified.

The expert, who did not wish to be named, said: “How much is Sala worth? And you don’t do any due diligence before that? Oh, come on.”

Claiming that even if no rules were broken, the flight should never have taken place, the expert added: “The whole idea of taking an asset like Sala, who’s worth an awful lot of money, in a light airplane like this, at night, with a pilot who didn’t have commercial qualifications, is bonkers – utterly, utterly bonkers.”

Cardiff said in a statement on Monday they had “grave concerns that questions still remain over the validity of the pilot’s licence and rating to undertake such a journey, as identified in the bulletin”.

  8. Liverpool took our Fields of Athenry song.

    Southampton our Armstrong’s hair ditty.

Many other English teams sing the Kieran Tierney and Sincy’s logical song.

So as a magnanimous gesture to Leicester we should gift them our BR tune.

BRENDAN RODGERS HE’S HERE FOR ALL OF YOUR DOUGH……

  9. Fool Time Whistle on

Kept a low profile to come to terms with things.

At times I find myself staring at the screen with a photo of Brendan Rodgers standing in front of the Leicester crest & he’s wearing a smile & a blue & white tie.

Seems pretty clear that he was tapped up before the official call from Leicester to Celtic.

How did it go sour? Was it last summer & the McGinn saga? Or maybe the proposed signing of Shved that Brendan managed to convey as something that he had no interest in because he was just another winger?

Was it Moussa’s last day transfer & did he want to tough it out like he did with Boyata & the club wanted the cash?

Frankly, it doesn’t matter, although I see that Moussa wasn;t slow to make the point that BR has only done what Moussa got slaughtered for doing only 4 months earlier.

For BR personally he may have felt that he had plateaued in Scotland, but a man who presented himself as the consummate uber professional he has left such a bad taste in so many mouths with his lack of class & genuine consideration for so many people – fans, players, directors, shareholders. He must choose what is best for him but it’s hard not to conclude from Moussa’s not so subtle tweets that BR was one of those who harangued Moussa mercilessly for precisely the same lack of class & professionalism when he left.

I don’t know nor really care whether the decision to leave now was his or because of Leicester’s ultimatum.

I suspect (with zero evidence I admit) that they would have been willing to wait till the summer for him: their season is over with relegation not a risk & Europa League not achievable. Perhaps BR thought that if he waited for the summer his recruitment would be hampered for a stab at EPL glory next season.

Like us all (mostly) getting well tuned that balance between what our head & our heart are both telling us is an art form that few have mastered. He has a score to settle with those who scoffed at him after his time at Liverpool & obsession’s like that can distort judgements.

He’ll get much more money as salary & tons more as a player budget. He’ll be given some slack this season as long as they survive in that league, although they’ll be looking for more wins at home – so tonight will be credited to him. Heard that LCFC spent 100million last summer on players & 168 million the previous 2 summers. Celtic’s comparables would struggle to be 10% of that total.

I genuinely regret how he has left because he actually did so much for us & the club after the Deila era. He will be denied an opportunnity to say goodbye & thank us for our support of him – support that has been pretty much unconditional from the very start. He should regret that & I hope he does. He has chosen the method & timing of his departure & I am certain that if he insisted on seeing out his season with Celtic – LCFC would have understood. In truth if they wouldn’t wait they couldn’t really have been that keen on him from the outset.

On twitter today I read so much anger & pain from Celtic folk & while I understood it all I found myself being curiously distant from those feelings. I was hurt, confused & stunned I suppose but nothing more negative than that. I completely feel for folk (like BSR) who have championed BR and even recently stood firm against those who feared BR was gone during the Catman posts from 24 hours ago.

Did Brendan have an escape plan in place and the only element missing was the “new” club?

Did he and his backroom staff have a conclave about this & discuss their options?

Was that meeting during the winter break or before the Newco defeat or just thos last weekend?

The legacy of our ex-manager that should have been unimpeachable has now been sullied, less because he left for pastures new but oh so much because of the method & timing of his departure. He ran away frankly and that is something that is beneath him or should have been. What of his uncles & cousins – all dyed in the wool Tims – who will now bear the brunt of so much crap? His claim to be a fan & his tearful address in the rain to fans outside a darkened Celtic Park as he held the League Cup – his first trophy – seem so hollow now.

I know that few of us would turn down a chance of a fantastic promotion, quadrupled salary & a massively increased budget to realize your professional ambitions – but really Brendan – a proper exit & a decent goodbye was all that you had to include in your terms to Leicester.

Leicester are hardly EPL giants but they might surprise us all by becoming a force enough to prove that their EPL title from 2017 was no mere fluke. However, I think that the competition is so strong that in a years time, there’ll be grumblings of discontent if BR hasn’t delivered the product on the field and the league position that the directors and fans demand.

I loved NFLennon’s comment during today’s interview with Gerry McCullough on Celtuc TV…

“It’s not about Brendan leaving or about me coming in here, it’s about Celtic Football Club.”

Just saw your piece about things…and as much as I would love it if Martin did return…I remember…

MON left because he was told that the club would no longer support his management style in the transfer market. NO more, Suttons, Hartsons, Lennons etc – all expensive assets that depreciated during their time with us and the board saw as 18 million thrown away with no tangible return (in their eyes as busniessmen).

Paul launched this sacred place as a result of the search for the elusive Seville money. Money that never existed of course because we posted a loss that 2002/3 season.

As our losses mounted each season and with no gold at the end of the rainbow, MON was informed that his profligate player recruitment style was over. Since he could n ot/would not change his style to one that suited the new fiscal prudence scheme, he left. This was massaged by the club into a personal decision due to family health matters.

Martin took time off but returned to football club management 14 months later at Aston Villa. He has remained in football management ever since. He still lives happily in Berkshire with his wife.

He will not return to Celtic.

  12. Saw this earlier spot on

So Brendan tried to rip the entire coaching team out of the club today, wanted Woods, Williamson and Kennedy to follow him. Coaches that have been at the club before his time.

Brendan Rodgers was willing to leave our club without an entire coaching team 24 hours before a tough away fixture. Just let that sink in to anyone sticking up for him or thanking him.

An absolute charlatan of a man that has duped an entire support into believing his nice plaudits and classy soundbites. I hope you fail badly at Leicester Brendan although there is something ironic in him going to a club that have to use plastic clappers to create an atmosphere. Suits that fake plastic @@@@ down to the ground

  13. Very different type of circumstances for Lenny taking the reigns this time . At a low ebb the last time and his impact in terms of performances and results was immediate.

Much more difficult act to follow. Confident he can keep us on track for the league but less confident about the cup. Mibbery will plummet to new depths to stop him in the cup as they did in the past. The expectant cheating will be a major hurdle to clear.

He comes back a better manager for the experience he’s had elsewhere . A bit wiser too imo.

Considering everything the man has given us as a player and a manager previously. Everything he’s endured on the field, off the field, in the dugout and in a shameful Edinburgh courtroom. There would be nothing more beautiful I could imagine than seeing Lenny lead us to completing the treble treble.

Remember telling a family member I was sad to see him go last time but wouldn’t be surprised if he came back to lead us to the ten. ( I know he’s here on interim basis currently ) . If this plays out like I think it will, I can see him being here next season, time will tell.

Welcome back Neil, give them hell.

    HH

  14. Fool Time Whistle what is forgotton about these large assets he bought was…………

that once he bought a strikers for 6m million he didn’t have to buy one for 5 years. then next few mangers bought lost of 2m duds and we kept trying and trying. if you add up the duds we signed at low cost it would have been more than enough money to invest in a goal scorer

I don’t mind investing money in proven goal scorer, we sold sold dembelle for 19m we should have given the boss at least 15m, but alas that money is now destined to fill gaps in CL income as we wont invest again

If DD spoke to oneil assure that the cash in the bank was him to invest, we could invest in a team that could last for years same as oneils first team Oneil built a team of approx. 13 players, after we left we ended up with a massive squad with very few commanding 1st eleven spots and the wage bill went up and transfer fees on so many duds went up false economy

but yes I ageee Martin would be quite happy in midlands but we cant have a PL puppet

  15. Fool Time Whistle on

    Sydney Tim

I agree with much of what you wrote.

I would say that all three of those I mentioned gave the club good value for the fee & wages, but because MON wasn’t interested in developing projects his style was costly. The board under Brian Quinn didn’t feel they could sustain that model and generate increasing losses every season.

I recall that Chris Sutton left under strachan’s watch pretty quickly & he has held a grudge against WGS ever since. He was told that his contract was going to be renewed until WGS told him otherwise.

The subsequent chaos as we tried to find relaible strikers in particular speaks for itself. VanHennegor of Hesselink & Scott MacDonald & then Gary Hooper were the rareties.

This is a microcosm of the perrenial big debate on here. Splash the cash or adopt the Ajax model. As it happens we seem to do neither that well at all.

Ajax have a system and recruit managers who subscribe to that completely. They & their fans are prepared to tolerate indifferent season as long as they see that their objective is getting closer.

We as Celtic fans have the 10 in a row as a holy grail which is fine enough but that means that serious, root & branch development cannot occur. We need to keep winning while doing that apparently & we need successive managers who all subscribe to that Big Plan.

Achieving all of that has been at the heart of why we are where we are.

We wanted domestic supremacy but without taking things to the next level that becomes meaningless to ambitious managers.

MON left because he wouldn’t be the puppet.

3 SPFL pts tomorrow & a much bigger point proved to the rest in Scotland.
