Best of luck Brendan and thanks for the trebles

914

If I’m being magnanimous, Brendan made no secret of the fact that he wanted to return to the English Premier League.  When he was here, he won everything available to him domestically and proved that you can please all of the people all of the time.  We want managers to be ambitious, honest and successful and that’s what we got.

It rankles that his timing was so poor, a day before we visit Tynecastle on league duty and five days before we visit Easter Road in the Cup.  Brendan saw little compensation in Moussa Dembele’s success here, or ambition, when he engineered his exit at a bad time for the manager, the same is true now.  Celtic knew nothing of this before yesterday and have a major job on their hands to ensure the quest for the treble treble remains on course.

Neil Lennon is likely to be announced as interim manager.  We are fortunate to have as an experienced hand available.  If anyone knows how to take a Celtic team to Edinburgh, it’s Neil.  Plans for next season will continue in the background, but Neil will be asked to deliver the treble and nothing will be allowed to distract him or the players from that objective.

I have heard from a few CQN’ers who are surprised today, but we should know better.  This is football, managers and players are highly paid professionals, all the badge thumping in the world does not change that.  Exceptions are rare.

Best of luck to you, Brendan, and thanks for the trebles.  You could have held out for better than Leicester, but there’s every chance you’ll keep them in the division for many years.

Apparently The Times are saying that Leicester were prepared to wait to the end of the season to sign him but he wanted to leave immediately. Probably for the best, all things considered.

Totally agree that Bankier does not provide any balance to the Peter Lawwell power base within the club but you might be making some assumptions over the motivations for Neil Lennon’s attitude.

It is possible that Neil accepts John Kennedy for different pragmatic reasons than his reasons for not wanting to mentor Ronny Deila. Remember, Neil wanted to leave Celtic too, and Johan Mjallby did leave, because he felt his personal managerial ambitions for Celtic were not being met. Neil owed us nothing and was being asked to serve the club in a self-sacrificial way, at a time, when he had been placed under momentous stress by his time at the club. He left and told PL to stuff it. Despite his relative success with us, he was not a sought-after manager on leaving and only landed the basket case job of Bolton. Despite his relative success at Hibs, he was growing frustrated there too and left in explosive circumstances. After a short break he is being offered a great gig, a chance to lead his beloved club on a title run-in with an 8 point cushion.

This is a great job for Neil, at least temporarily. And it’s a great thing for us that such a trusted servant is available. All those who thought he left Celtic and PL with irreconcilable hatred are proven wrong. Managers and purse-string holders will always fall out. No manager will ever, genuinely, say- “No, I have spent enough”. They have to work within that creative tension with someone who says “No” to a purchase. No club can survive without both sides vying. There’s a Ying and Yang between “I want” and “No, we can’t have that”. No manager has ever had complete budget control- not Jock Stein, not Sir Alex, Not Brendan (not at Liverpool or Celtic or Leicester). Neil will not get it either.

I realise your point about PL being too powerful in this equation is a more subtle point than those who imagine a “football man” is going to have complete fiscal autonomy within a club, but there are a lot of Celtic fans views which , I think, will not be put to the test of reality as there will be no return anywhere in world football anywhere to the days of Brian CLough and Malcolm Allison riding roughshod over budget constraints and damn the consequences.

Your more subtle point will only ever be put to the test when PL leaves because who knows if he is a force that positions us well or constrains our achievements, until we have another bench mark who faces the same financial markets and does better, the same or worse. Until then it is all speculation.

So, if Catman was right, and we should exercise doubt on that matter with due care, then Neil is and will be grateful to have John Kennedy as continuity when he (NL) is the one coming in from the cold to Celtic. That is a different situation than when he was asked to delay his departure and suppress his own personal ambitions to wet nurse Ronny Deila for a season. I harbour no resentment that NFL refused that offer.

P.S. Would you change your views on the PL/BR blance of power if it emerged that, say, BR wanted to leave last summer for a job far less prestigious than the Leicester one, but was cajoled and offered additional rewards (a la Boyata) to stay on for a year by the PL/DD axis?

I am not saying this is true or factual. I have absolutely no proof on this, but I have heard such rumour from sober sources. Would that put any new slant on your analysis?

    I wil catch replies later.

    MACJAY1 @ 8:58 AM,

This month our school chaplain has been convicted… he will be sentenced next week.

Many pupils were very close to him, my best pal included…

I went on retreat to a Convent in east Anglia with him.

    It isn`t.

    Now here`s a first.

A Celtic supporter who imagines that politics and religion are unconnected.

And what has your school chaplain got to do with Cardinal Pell ?

    Guilt by association ?

  5. Sorry I don’t see how not waiting til the end of the season would be ‘for the best’.

It is the whole crux of this issue and the real reason for the bad taste.

A professional manager who lives by his morals would have ended things correctly at the end of the season.

I think the anger we feel will be tenfold on the players he has been spouting this kind of crap to for 2.5 years.

  6. Zack Lister And it all started with this….

So the boy Harry Brady is quite in with the board. Interviewed lawell and interview Rodgers ECT so usually knows a wee bit about what’s going on. He’s been quiet for a while but went on a podcast yesterday and basically said this happened… Rodgers was approached by a Chinese club (remember Chinese league is super rich) and offered 8m signing on plus 10m a season to move there. This was at the VERY start of the window mind when he kept talking about puntin dembele and KT. Apparently he tried to persuade dembele to go with him as well. He then goes to the board and says he wants the job and Desmond and Lawell get him to stay an agree a 2m bonus if he qualified for CL and 4m in shares which would match roughly what’s he was offered as a signing on bonus. They gave him assurances that he would be backed and we sign eddy for 9m. Everything’s fine team playing well and happy days. Lawell then f about with his three priority targets who where mcginn Fabian schar and Christin Pizzini. Pizzini was the priority signing for RB. He doesn’t get signed then they miss mcginn and schar (cb) and Rodgers goes mental cause he’s effectively been betrayed by Lawell. Has that presser before aek and slaughters him because he now knows he’s knocked back China and he’s not getting backed. Then we get pumped out an it’s bye bye to the share issue and bonus and he then isn’t getting backed at all because Lawell etc think he’s gonna walk before the seasons out. So we and up with izzy and mulumbu and only got benkovich because he didn’t make the LC squad. Then dembele goes and in his Lyon presser says Rodgers was a hypocrite because he tried to block his transfer but 2 months ago he was trying to get him to move to China. Rodgers down tools and Lawell looking for his replacement. DD apparently gets them both to a meeting in London mid week and effectively says to them sort this out. To Rodgers he says your in the top 10 highest paid managers in the UK start acting like it because if you don’t he will make him unemployable. To Lawell he says back him in Januray to the fullest of your powers or your finished. Q the St J game and BR has a positive press conference taking full responsibility and Lawell in the crowd. He says he is 99.9% certain that Rodgers will be gone before the end of the season if anyome comes in for him and the board have lined up moyes to replace him. Moyes spotted at Celtics last 2 games. He says he’s found this out mainly through agents and is 100% sure the players know what’s going on so many of them have downed tools because they feel that Rodgers is working his ticket and will abandon ship at the first opportunity.

That’s a text from an agent at Celtic

  7. Have to say the more I read about yesterday’s events, the more I believe this guy was going out his way to hurt the club

  8. I see the Times, of all papers, is reporting that Rodgers had an opportunity to remain at Celtic until the end of the season. It is alleged that Leicester City were prepared to pay £6 mill to secure his services and wait until the SPFL season was completed before Rodgers joined them. BR allegedly told them he wanted an immediate start!

Also agree with Chris Sutton’s comments. It has all happened to fast not to be suspicious that there may have been talks going on prior to the Celtic announcing they had given permission for BR to talk to Leicester. As he rightly points out – negotiate a long term deal with all that entails in a few hours – highly suspicious.

Seems as if the Timternet is now awash with bloggers claiming to have known all along that Brendan was a self-serving narcissist. Some even claiming that PL himself had told them that Brendan was at it almost from the start of his tenure. BR knew the budget constraints he had to work under and that it was he (BR) that was the cause of the problems. Who to believe an alleged self-serving individual or another self serving individual.

Also liked Stan Collymore’s tweet in Irish regarding Rodgers- basically what goes around comes around.

  9. Looking forward, my only concern is about the influence of losing Kolo Toure on Ntcham, Odsonne and Bayo.

“Like I say”, may affect Scott Sinclair, while Benkovic, Weah, Toljan, Burke and Boyata are only here until the summer.

Lenny has a title to win starting this evening.

Could do with a wee positive injection from returning mainstays like Ntcham, Tom Rogic and maybe even the Griff.

I definitely trust Lenny to win the treble with,

    Bain, ( Gordon)

Lustig, Boyata, Benkovic, KT, ( Ajer, Jozo, Toljan & Hayes)

    Broonie ,Calmac. ( Bitton, Ntcham)

Jamesie, Tom Rogic, SS. ( Ryan C, Mikey J, Weah, Ewan H)

    Edouard. ( Griff, Bayo, Burke).

    15 games to glory Neil.

Agreed Ernie – which is why I’m not as angry as many. More annoyed/bemused at the timing and speed of events.

No tactical plan B, in Europe plan A just didnt work, quite frankly it was bizarre asking your back 4 & GK to indulge in tiki-taka and expect Scott Bain and Craig Gordon to emulate Pirlo in his heyday. The whole hospital ball to the full backs tight to the touchline routine was of little benefit/utterly pointless even when it came off.

Good players helped us succeed domestically and Rodgers the idealist helped us produce many great moments but in Europe we need a combination of our talented players and a manager that sets them up to play to their strengths.

For that reason, we have more chance of winning the tight Euro home games under Lennon than we do under Rodgers.

Whether its Lenny for the long term after this season remains to be seen but he has to be the heavy favourite.

It is being alleged he was doing that already. I guess we may owe a begrudging apology to Moussa. After all he, allegedly, was only doing what the man who brought him to Celtic was doing.

    Dodgeabullet CSC

  16. It was probably just a matter of money . I think I read that BR was on about £5mill a year when he was at Liverpool . He surely was not getting anything close to that here ………But at Leicester he probably be back to that level again. Maybe more ,I dont know . He also has an expensive divorce to deal with.

  17. Still feeling a bit numb and sad about what has transpired these last 24 hours. Time to look forward and get behind NFL Broony and The Bhoys. Starting in Embra tonight.

    Moyes is another phoney.

The more you think about it, its hard to envisage anything but Lenny getting the job.

Clearly if we lose the league with an 8pt cushion the job will not be his. But under what other circumstances would he not get the job? One is if we can afford and secure another high profile, experienced manager. Unlikely?

Another scenario is if he doesn;t want it full time. Even more unlikely.

I’d say its Lenny going forward long term. I’d be fairly pleased with that all going well over the next 3 months. There is no pretension from him and it was under him we last punched above our weight in Europe.

  20. I don’t believe the taking Dembelle to China stuff

I don’t believe the Davie Moyes replacement stuff.

I also think up until yesterday that Brendan was a fantastic manager of our football club who did everything he could for our football club and the chipping away now at his tactics by some are churlish.

We are only [rightly so] pissed off with him now because he was a good manager with good tactics.

I remain angry and upset at the way he left us in a flash for cash.

Two excellent champions league qualifying campaigns.

European football beyond xmas in each of his last two seasons which I am sure is not our normal.

European football has evolved quality wise and I will accept post xmas football by any celtic manager and deem it a success.

    BR has gone – WHY:

May 2018 BR has been at Celtic 2 years and has won double treble and qualified for CL group stages twice

He is feeling pretty good about how things are going and correctly – imho – feels he should get supported by PL

But BR forgets there is only one boss and PL has doubts about him

The China rumour did not help, Compper didn’t help, so PL sat on his hands during the summer transfer window

I posted during that period that PL had denied BR McGinn for the sake of £0.5m

Peanuts compared to the £60m BR had brought in for 2 CL qualifications not to mention filling seats

The bottom line PL would not support a double treble winning manager for half a mil. – WHY ???

BTW please do not look for answer here – as I have no idea

But what does PL know that made him deny BR what made PL not back him in that summer transfer window

Has PL become immune to who is a good manager and who is only good because they are managing Celtic

Ronny as an example good record at Celtic but average anywhere else

Even NFL good at Celtic average elsewhere

But BR is in the MON category a proper manager

Since PL has been CEO we have had a ew mistakes but also a few genuine top managers

Im not sure PL knows the difference

BR is not our manager today because of a break down in the relationship with PL – WHY??

I have no idea but I get confused trying to understand our club

But we will carry on supporting celtic even if we don’t understand her
