Better have Dresden expose some weaknesses

851

Technically we’re not preseason anymore, but today’s friendly away to Dynamo Dresden is an important step.  There are six weeks before the end of August, with five Champions League qualifier match days in that time.

Tuesday’s gentle introduction to competitive challenges was probably a good place to start for Celtic, this week’s run-out at Murrayfield will allow more of the squad to get some miles under their belt, but you can be sure we will meet our match at some point in the next six weeks.  It would be better for all that Dresden expose as many weaknesses as possible (at the time of writing that doesn’t look likely).

As usual, the mantra for these occasions is: no injuries.

Legia Warsaw are on league duty this evening. I hope we have someone watching.

If Lizzy can lay a wreath for our republican dead we can accept her at Celtic Park – end off as far as I’m concerned.

Murdoch’s goal in that game will live with me always.

His rocket shot hit the underside of the bar and bounced up and down a few times before nestling in the rigging.I can’t for the life of me remember us missing a penalty though.

Hi ST, I hope ye are well.

I disagree, I think Pukki will be sensational next season and merely excellent this season.

Derk and Amido might not make it, although I wouldn’t discard them so quickly.

RONNY Deila highlighted the positive outcomes from Celtic’s draw against Dynamo Dresden as focus now shifts to Tuesday’s visit of KR Reykjavik in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round.

The Hoops made their early pressure pay in Germany when Kris Commons clinically found the net after good setup work from Teemu Pukki and Callum McGregor.

At half-time, the manager rang the changes as all of the travelling squad got further game-time under their belts.

Sylvano Calvanious levelled the match for the hosts midway through the second half as an entertaining match finished one apiece.

Played in sweltering heat, and following some intensive training sessions, the manager was pleased at his players’ efforts when he spoke exclusively to Celtic TV after the game.

“It was a very tough game with the heat and I’m proud of the boys as they worked hard for 90 minutes after I had trained them hard yesterday and then they had the long trip to Germany,” said the Norwegian. “The result was ok and now it’s all about getting energy into the game on Tuesday.

“The first 20 minutes were good, and I think we got the physical shape out of this. We had a lot of chances in the first half and again at the start of the game but we need those periods to be longer.

“Every player got 45 minutes in a nice stadium with a good atmosphere so it was worth it. But now it’s important to let the boys rest so we are full of energy and have no excuses going into the game on Tuesday.”

Craig Gordon started between the sticks to make his Celtic bow and the Scotland internationalist turned in an impressive performance, making several excellent stops.

There was also a debut for Icelandic frontman Holmbert Fridjonsson, who came on at the interval in place of Teemu Pukki.

“Holmbert is a talented boy and he needs time,” said the Hoops boss. “It was good for him to get 45 minutes, his first appearance in the top team under me. He did well and worked hard.

“I was very pleased with Craig. It was a fantastic performance and he was like a cat in the goals and everything seemed easy. I am happy for him after two years and three months since the last time he played.”

Stand-in skipper Kris Commons caused some concern when forced to leave the action prematurely after a clash towards the end of the first half. But the manager was hopeful he would be fit for the second-leg encounter against the Icelandic champions.

“He got a knee in his thigh,” he said. “It can hurt but I don’t think it’s very big and I hope he’s ready for Tuesday.”
