Billy and Davie on Caesar and the Assassin

856

Billy McNeill and Davie Hay met the press at Celtic Park yesterday, along with Alex Gordon, who authored their time as managers of Celtic.  It didn’t disappoint……

Billy was self-effacing as ever.  For all purposes, today he is an ordinary Celtic fan, so much so you need to remind yourself that there is nothing in the club game he hasn’t done.  Yesterday was about his days as Celtic manager but he made the point that Davie Hay was a profound influence on him as a team-mate.

The take-away thought I had on Davie Hay was about his range of knowledge and experience.  He has done so much in the game which still pulses in his veins.  Does Scotland still produce men of his calibre?  If so, why are we not giving them a platform to flourish?

There is tons of great stuff in the book from both men:

“We were already a goal down nine minutes into the second-half when Johnny Doyle was ordered off.  As he came off, I remember telling him he would be in serious trouble if we lost.

“I was furious, especially as we were in such a desperate situation at the time.

“Afterwards in the foyer, Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Murdoch, Mike Jackson, Paul Wilson, Pat McCluskey, Benny Rooney and a whole host of former players were dancing around in amazement.

“Jinky was as happy as I’ve seen him. That win meant so much to anyone with an affiliation with Celtic.”

– Billy McNeill on winning the league against Rangers in 1979.

“I arranged for someone to cut out the stories and pin them to the walls of our dressing room at Love Street.

“I said nothing, but I could see the players reading the clippings. It was having the desired effect. It’s never clever to dismiss Celtic.

“It’s history now that we won 5-0 and Hearts lost 2-0.

“I think I still owe [Albert Kidd] a pint!”

-Davie Hay on winning the league at Love St in 1986.

The book’s great, reading the step-by-step accounts of what happened from the managers’ view, you’ll love it.  I know I’m biased but it’s the best thing CQN has done, a wee bit of our history set down on record.

From Earlier..Sorry l had to Run to School..Thanks for your reasoned responses earlier..

Can l just say l admire you and other work on Res 12..l just don’t understand the Boycott of Celtic because of someone else’s Actions..

I Fully understand and supported the Boycott in 94 and am related to the Man who stood on the Steps and declared ‘The War is over the Rebels have Won’

Morrisey mentioned his reason for Boycott is Celtic’s inaction on Res12..as someone who spent 11 Years through the Courts arguing over something that both parties agreed 100% happened and witnessed happening three 2 out of 3 Judges asked why we were in Court..

    To my Point..

At a CQN Night about 3 Years ago l was sitting with Martin42 and others and from the Floor Paul67 and Phil were asked how long they thought the Rangers case would Last..The Nimmo Smith decision and Tax cast..if l remember correctly answered were something like 4 to 5 Years..I Immediately said 16 to 18 Years..

As l mentioned before..l never spent 11 Years fighting for the Truth to be Told..l slowly Realised l was Just fighting Lawyers.

If l am Correct in thinking and it is Only my Opinion Celtic can Only really act till the Legal minefield is Cleared..

Celtic FC Have Already stopped Rangers getting a Free Pass to the SPL so would obviously do so Again if they thought there was a Case to Answer..

Again thanks for the Reasoned responses..

One thing l can say 100% is that My Love for Celtic gets bigger the Longer and Further l am away from Paradise..

  17. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan supports Oscar Knox, MacKenzie Furniss and anyone else who fights Neuroblastoma on

    Good Morning.

Is it just me, or is there a huge race to the bottom of the barrel when it comes to journalism in this country — and by that I mean the UK.

My ire is spiked this morning by the coverage of the return to Britain of Shrien Diwani who was acquitted of his wife’s murder in a court in Pakistan.

Not only was Mr Diwani acquitted, but effectively the judge ruled that there was simply no case to answer in relation to the murder charge that he faced and fought for four years.

Yet the coverage this morning focuses on:

    A. Whether the murdered woman’s family might bring some sort of civil claim against Diwani and

    B. The victim’s family are disappointed that there was no opportunity to find out the truth by having Diwani cross examined in the witness box.

Dealing with the latter point first, why doesn’t anyone simply point out that an enquiry into the truth is a different thing entirely from a murder trial.

In any criminal trial it is not the judge or jury’s job to establish the truth but to establish whether the charges before the court have been proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The two things are completely different.

Further, Diwani is innocent until proven guilty and need not say a single word in his defence — and of course he should say nothing at all especially when the judge has ruled that there was no reasonable prospect of any case being proven against him based upon the evidence offered by the prosecution.

As for a civil case, what does any civil claim against him seek to achieve?

    Damages?

    Damages for what?

What civil wrong has Shrien Diwani committed that would leave him liable to compensate anyone?

    It would appear absolutely none.

It would appear that his wife and him were the victims of a crime. Perhaps what bothers some is that the wife was murdered and that he wasn’t?

Had both been murdered then that would have been a tragedy but a nice neat even tragedy where you can only blame the lying taxi drivers.

But life ain’t always that neat alas.

The point here is that many think that the law is an ass.

Well maybe sometimes it is and maybe sometimes it is just administered and reported by asses.

The law itself often makes sense and is perfectly clear and reasoned.

However, like everything else it can be “fannied about with” to use a good piece of Glasgow parlance.

What hope do we have of having the law properly explained and public opinion properly informed about a murder case and a trial which was committed and ruled on in a foreign jurisdiction thousands of miles away when we can find no one to properly explain whether a football club is incorporated in the eyes of the law or not on our own doorstep?

The Nimmo Smith decision is a canker on the arse of football and the application of the legal rules of football. It is a contrived and tortuous legal decision based upon unchallenged and ill examined evidence from an official who, to be frank, appears to have sat on his arse and administered nothing for years and years whilst being paid a salary at the SFA.

If we are to accept Mr Bryson’s expert testimony, it would appear that the SFA’s own rules were completely incompetent and/or that Bryson himself was incompetent and that the SFA itself was completely incompetent and not fit for purpose in allowing both the rules and the rules administrator to remain in situ.

Those who want to get to the truth of the Diwani case should of course be turning their guns on the Pakistani authorities and asking just how they brought such an incompetent prosecution to court and why when they were faced with convicted perpetrators of the fatal attack whose testimony re Diwani was so obviously unreliable.

Relying on such legal rubbish simply covers up the truth rather than establish it.

Of course it is unthinkable that any legal or authoritative body in this country would base its entire stance and position on any topic based upon illogical testimony and the word of proven wrongdoers who have broken the rules surrounding the incident concerned.

If that were to happen I have no doubt the press would be all over it wondering how they get at the truth and surmising about the potential for a civil claim by the victims of the crime or wrongdoing concerned.

Or maybe I am just deluded?

The case was brought in South Africa. Not Pakistan.

The reason for the apparent sensationalism of the case,IMO,lies in the fact that he was homosexual, engaging in an arranged marriage to help hide this ‘sinful’ side to him,and that she was a bit of a babe.

That her death might be convenient for him,in that respect, was pretty much all the prosecution had to go on. That he is gay and she was a bit of a babe made it a hot topic for certain papers.

I doubt we’ll ever get the truth, but a family lost a daughter, and a husband lost a wife and his reputation.

BRTH I suspect if you were to do a straw poll on whether the public thought Dewani was guilty there would be a massive YES vote.

There is a belief that the case never went to trial was because the Dewani family had the financial clout to hire the best lawyers in South Africa (not Pakistan) and that the prosecutors and police were shall we say not as competent. Anyone looking at this case from the outside is thinking the guy literally got away with murder.

The family of the murdered woman had many questions they would have liked Dewani to answer on the stand. You’re right it is not his fault that those questions will never be asked.

I am not so sure the straw poll would go as you say.

There appears to have been just no evidence to convict Diwani on other than the shady and contradictory evidence of the taxi driver.

The guy’s sexuality has been exposed and made public as a result of the entire affair and he will have undoubtedly have spent tens of thousands of pounds defending a case which the court said was complete and utter mince.

If we are to follow the logic in the press it would appear to be a virtual crime to be able to afford legal representation and then be acquitted as a result of that legal representation doing its job properly — not forgetting the precise wording of the judge.

I have been involved in relatively high profile cases where liberty and public reputation were in peril as a result of a prosecution which was full of contradictions, dodgy testimony, legal inconsistencies and worst of all a letter from the Lord Advocate of the day which read “prosecute him for something!” — though I was never meant to see that.

Thankfully, the judge also threw that one out at the end of the prosecution case because it did not meet the basic test of there being a reasonable case to answer taking the crown evidence at its highest.

    There was nothing there.

The failure to report properly on the proceedings and the applicable law leads to the likely result of a straw poll you refer to.

God help us all when it comes to the court of public opinion especially if that public is ill informed by a lazy press.
