Blood on the brogues

The resignation of Charles Green from his post as Rangers International chief executive last month was more curious for what it wasn’t – a resignation from the board.  Green retained his position as a director of the club.  This was always likely to have consequences.

BBC report this morning that club chairman, Malcolm Murray, who media outlets loyal to Green reported innuendo against earlier this year, in what was viewed as an attempt to discredit and ultimately remove him, yesterday lost a vote of confidence at a board meeting.

I am certain the vote of confidence was called by Murray himself after he informed the board, including Charles Green, of how he intends to deal with the important matters surrounding the club at this time.  In particular, what he plans to do with information received from Pinsent Masons and forensic accountants from Deloitte.  The investigation underway by Pinsents and Deloittes is only taking place at the insistence of Murray.

The innuendo against Murray was inappropriate and part of a dirty tricks campaign against the man by those who do not have Rangers best interests at heart [the irony is searing].  The normal reaction to losing a vote of confidence is to resign and let your opponents deal with the consequences of their actions.  Murray may feel he has done all he can for the club (or company, if that is how some would like to start calling the entity now). Those who invested in Craig Whyte’s various claims last month will enormously encouraged.

On Friday I’ll be joined by Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and Paul McConville at the Columba Club, Blantyre, for what is certain to be an enjoyable Question and Answer event.  Tickets, £5 each, for the Columba Charitable Fund, are available at the door.  I’m really looking forward to it.  See you there.

10.07am – Jose Mourinho has now replaced David Moyes as the favourite to succeed Ferguson with many of the bookmakers. Interesting that the Special One’s negotiations to return to Chelsea have reportedly hit a bit of a snag.

  2. Wee had big Jock, England had Alex, without doubt two of the greatest managers ever!

He was also the co- commentator in the 1988 SCF v’s D/utd when, with us trailing

the Cellic end was singing – YNWA – and Swalex said “Nobody lifts a team the way that they(Celtic fans) do. This is not finished !”

I know and appreciate all the guid things that he said but – he let himself down when he played his reserve team in the CL the season that ‘Walter’ was humped in all the home games.

It seems to me most unlikely that Mourinho would be a lasting success at Manchester United. He seems to thrive on being the centre of attention, noising everyone up, creating havoc, and, yes, winning prizes, but then rolling the circus out of town and on to a new venue.

Anyone remember Ferguson dancing around celebrating a goal for thon team that doesn’t exist anymore against Celtic with Murray and the Cardigan?

Never liked the guy and always thought him an arrogant bully.

Sure he was a good manager. I wonder if he’d have achieved so much minus all the cash at Man U.

If they are going to go down that route, they should just appoint Giggs now and give him the two years to learn on the job. What is he likely to learn from two years in Mourinho’s shadow?

  9. I recall one day on – SSB – when Hugh Keevins was saying that Swalex was the best Scottish manager of all time when – Davie Provan butted in – “Whit ? Best Scottish manager of ALL time ? With ALL that money at his disposal and he’s only posted 2 CL’s ?

What would Mr Stein have won with a fraction of what Swalex had ?”

The debate was interrupted when BFSDJ butted-in with “It’s another goal Bannockburn haddie-choackers…etc…”

What odds on Charles Ramsey succeeding Fergie? He’s good for a treble….what?!

  11. Giggs will never be a manager for me. His private life blew that chance and he doesn’t look comfortable with the press. The media are part of a modern managers remit.

Moyes in the only man who should replace Ferguson. It’s a like for like move and means they would move on as seamless as possible.

If they go down the European manager route they could do a lot worse than getting Conte in from Juventus. He has the experience and as we know from first hand experience he has the tactical nous.

Not my team so I don’t really know, maybe because they need to be successful straight away at Manchester, Giggs could handle the job straight away I think, like Pep at Barca..

I would love to Jose at Manchester just for the comedy value in the English media!

    JohnnyClash @ 10 13,

Only did it the once —-Mrs S of T is adamant that we will never do it again . 3 years ago and she still mouths off about it . She tells people that it was like a Star Wars bar populated by drunk foul mouthed mutants wearing fitba tops .[ no prize for guessing the team ]

It was truly horrible . It was 6am . An airport., Mid week , late May

  14. Mourinho will be next Man U manager. That’s the reason Fergie has walked now, if they don’t get him this summer he’ll go back to Chelsea and they will miss out.

  15. Every manager in the EPL will be cracking open a bottle this morning. Ferguson is worth 10-15 points a season to Manchester United with the referee calls they get from Ferguson’s intimidation of officials.

  16. I think the ‘alleged turmoil’ over Ibrokes way is a smokescreen.

It’s pretty obvious to me that Walter Smith (no laughing please) is being lined up to replace Swalex.

    We’ve been duped.

SAF is one of the few [the only? ] managers to follow great success in Scotland with greater success down in Foreign.

Man U will do well to replace him.

I watched how D Moyes hanled himself in recent interviews and tv appearances and thought to myself he is hand made for the Man U job now.

A year or two working closely with AF guidance and then handed the reigns completely.

Yes —–it takes time and effort . The problem is reaching an understanding that dead can be a descriptive superlative.

  20. TwoMacaroons on

This might seem radical, and I’m sure AF’s succeeder has already been chosen, and it will be a massive task just dealing with the expectation levels they will encounter at old Trafford, I’m sure the will have at the very least considered our very own NFL.

Mourinho was on the receiving end of some barbed comments from his own player Pepe at the end of last Saturday’s game between Real Madrid and Real Valladolid. Ostensibly, Pepe was criticising Mourinho over the way he has handled Iker Casillas in the second half of this season.

Yesterday, Mourinho was asked for a response and he said this: “You don’t have to be very intelligent to understand that Pepe is just speaking out of frustration. There he is at 31 and he’s been knocked over by a kid of 20, and I was the one who was brave enough to put that kid in. Pepe’s life has changed. He’s gone from being an absolute first-pick to not being one, a decision of mine that, unlike other such decisions, no one has criticised in public.

“Pepe’s problem is Raphael Varane, and that is the whole story here.”

  22. Whilst I believe Alex Ferguson to be a thoroughly decent human being I came to detest Manure. I for one will be happy he has retired because the one reason for lessening my dislike for Manure will have gone. I hope it is Murinho so my detest can be complete.
