Blood on the brogues

The resignation of Charles Green from his post as Rangers International chief executive last month was more curious for what it wasn’t – a resignation from the board.  Green retained his position as a director of the club.  This was always likely to have consequences.

BBC report this morning that club chairman, Malcolm Murray, who media outlets loyal to Green reported innuendo against earlier this year, in what was viewed as an attempt to discredit and ultimately remove him, yesterday lost a vote of confidence at a board meeting.

I am certain the vote of confidence was called by Murray himself after he informed the board, including Charles Green, of how he intends to deal with the important matters surrounding the club at this time.  In particular, what he plans to do with information received from Pinsent Masons and forensic accountants from Deloitte.  The investigation underway by Pinsents and Deloittes is only taking place at the insistence of Murray.

The innuendo against Murray was inappropriate and part of a dirty tricks campaign against the man by those who do not have Rangers best interests at heart [the irony is searing].  The normal reaction to losing a vote of confidence is to resign and let your opponents deal with the consequences of their actions.  Murray may feel he has done all he can for the club (or company, if that is how some would like to start calling the entity now). Those who invested in Craig Whyte’s various claims last month will enormously encouraged.

On Friday I’ll be joined by Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and Paul McConville at the Columba Club, Blantyre, for what is certain to be an enjoyable Question and Answer event.  Tickets, £5 each, for the Columba Charitable Fund, are available at the door.  I’m really looking forward to it.  See you there.

  1. As a manager Ferguson is absolutely top drawer – his record speaks for itself. He can’t be replaced and it will be a mistake to try to do so. Unless they are incredibly organised and fortuitous, as Liverpool were in the late 70s and early 80s, no matter who they bring in Man U will diminish under their next managers and it will be tough for supporters to take – and I don’t just mean winning trophies, which they should continue to do with the financial advantages they have – but the loss of stature will affect them too and will be frustrating and irritating for them across the board as all sorts of minnows and shysters seek their pound of flesh or take their revenge for years of being under Ferguson’s displeasure. Like losing Jock or MON, recovery after a brilliant all encompassing manager is not straightforward even if there’s still success. We were very lucky with WGS, and now with Neil we should do everything we reasonably can to ensure he is able to stay and continue to progress and succeed. There are not all that many managers out there who can handle a big club.

I think Moyes has it. Hasn’t won a trophy but English football has changed. The FA cup isn’t important annymore. The League Cup has never been important. The riches that are gained through league positions are mental. Moyes has achieved plenty at Everton on less money spent than teams like Stoke City, Aston Villa, Fulham and QPR.

    Two big ifs:

IF Lenny leaves and IF ‘the Special One’ gets the Utd gaff…

What chance Lenny to Everton and Moyes to Paradise?

    Just musing like…

  5. From the business point of view – Jose Mourinho is the obvious choice.

The Glazers have Man Utd listed on the New York Stock Exchange (£2B+ value) and they will have the final say on Fergie’s replacement. When David Gill announced his retirement the shares took a dip – can’t see them wanting a repeat if they appoint Moyes (who has won nothing).

Man Utd haven’t won the CL for 5 years (2008) – Jose has won it with 2 Clubs and the risk of him going to Chelski and doing it with a third (plus being a serious contender for the EPL) would not be good for their marketing strategy and share value.

Jose (wants the job) – ticks all the boxes and from a marketing point of view the Glazers know Man Utd will never be off the front and back pages.

Note: this opinion might be influenced by my bet on Jose @5/1. :-)

    livibhoy,

I agree with what you said re Moyes, and I like the guy, but I’m afraid he’s not a winner, and Man U will not be satisfied with just top sixes.

  7. Someone please explain to me why David Moyes would be quoted for the Old Trafford job. What has he done other than spend a long time at one club? Mourinho is a stick-on.

Fergie has done a fantastic job and deserves to enjoy his retirement. A great man and a great manager.

Happy Birthday to you, my friend. I hope it’s wonderful day and all your days will be like today.

  9. Just heard: as a mark of respect for SAF on his retirement – all EPL clubs will play an extra 2 minutes this weekend!

I think his longevity at Everton is a plus point. Mourinho will be there 3 years tops and then off on his travels again.

See that Collum is the Ref for the Cup Final..

Lazio ‘s Manager described Collum as being one of two things —–” incompetent or influenced ”

Petkovic speaks 7 Languages . An Italian reporter told Petkovic that he’d seen Petkovic constantly berating Collum but had then noticed that he’d stopped shouting at Collum and had taken to sarcastically applauding and shouting Bravo !. instead .

Petkovic replied that Collum had ” exhausted my vocabulary” and added ” absolutely the worst Referee I ‘ve ever seen “

  12. Re Sir Furious –

So that’s why Kenny Jackett resigned yesterday….

  13. Livibhoy –

I agree that Mourinho will only be there a few years, but that’s what the United board will be looking for. Just because Sir Alex was there for a generation doesn’t mean the next guy will be.

  14. Tom McLaughlin

Fair point. We all look at this differently. Would Mourinho work under Ferguson though? My understanding is that he will move upstairs.

  15. No matter what people think of Man U etc I have to say having met Sir Alex he is a true gentleman and will be a loss to football as a whole. I don’t think we will ever see anyone server a club for the length of time he has done.

I just cannot see Moyes being his replacement. I reckon the Man U board got jittery when they saw how close Mourinho is to going back to Chelsea. I don’t think it is any secret he is Sir Alex’s first choice as his replacement.

Then that would probably be an appointment from within or Moyes.

I don’t see an appointment coming from an out of work manager

A few years ago I would have said MON was a dead cert for utd. We can speculate all day but AF will have had a big say in who his successor is, which leads you to ask, does he want anyone being as successful as him?

  18. Birthday Wishes vhman.

You share the day with a very special person……my missus!

Can’t see the logic of Moyes to OT.

He lacks the winning mentality and football style that would be acceptable to the ManU followers.

On a related point, the style of football on offer at CP at present, is not acceptable to the Celtic support.

It is only a sense of loyalty to Neil Lennon that is keeping the decreasing attendances onside.

I fear that if Neil is unable to adapt his style to a more attractive model, then he will suffer the disaffection that Gordon Strachan endured in his final season.

Big decisions required at Celtic Park.

Would like to see Jose going to United purely as a huge two finger salute to Chelsea. Klopp would be great for EPL but why would he leave Dortmund?

Just thinking the same thing. His stock has fallen substantially since taking on the Sunderland job.

I doubt your second point will feature in fergie’s mind. No matter who takes over, they won’t have the longevity Fergie had.

JM has a €10m buy out clause. If there were negotiations it would have broken by now either here or in Spain.

Aside from that, JM is the antithesis of how MU want their manager to conduct himself.

  24. praecepta – it doesn’t really matter though because a manager is not like a player. He can just resign and let a UEFA tribunal set the compensation. There is no registration to withhold.

It isn’t the done thing, and they always try and agree the compo, but he can just walk.

  25. Ten Men Who Win the League

whilst I am not championing Davie Moyesfor anything (although I was very keen fo him to have been Celtic Manager after both WGS and Tony Mowbray) I don’t get your style of footie critique. Everton have been one of the most attacking teams this season and have been very entertaining.

  26. SAF will not move upstairs at OT.

United made that mistake when Matt Busby retired and his shadow proved disasterous for succeeding managers, until Fergie came along……and he took about seven years to get things moving.

  27. mearns 2 milton

Klopp would be great for EPL but why would he leave Dortmund?

Because he would be able to test himself in the best league in the world!!! The English arrogance is really something.
