Blood on the brogues

The resignation of Charles Green from his post as Rangers International chief executive last month was more curious for what it wasn’t – a resignation from the board.  Green retained his position as a director of the club.  This was always likely to have consequences.

BBC report this morning that club chairman, Malcolm Murray, who media outlets loyal to Green reported innuendo against earlier this year, in what was viewed as an attempt to discredit and ultimately remove him, yesterday lost a vote of confidence at a board meeting.

I am certain the vote of confidence was called by Murray himself after he informed the board, including Charles Green, of how he intends to deal with the important matters surrounding the club at this time.  In particular, what he plans to do with information received from Pinsent Masons and forensic accountants from Deloitte.  The investigation underway by Pinsents and Deloittes is only taking place at the insistence of Murray.

The innuendo against Murray was inappropriate and part of a dirty tricks campaign against the man by those who do not have Rangers best interests at heart [the irony is searing].  The normal reaction to losing a vote of confidence is to resign and let your opponents deal with the consequences of their actions.  Murray may feel he has done all he can for the club (or company, if that is how some would like to start calling the entity now). Those who invested in Craig Whyte’s various claims last month will enormously encouraged.

On Friday I’ll be joined by Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and Paul McConville at the Columba Club, Blantyre, for what is certain to be an enjoyable Question and Answer event.  Tickets, £5 each, for the Columba Charitable Fund, are available at the door.  I’m really looking forward to it.  See you there.

@SeamusGibbon I’m relaxed but they’re talking abt doing this on TV as well as Tomoblog. Ull appreciate this takes time.

  2. TMWTL – as I just said to the good praecepta, Mourinho can just walk and allow a tribunal to set the compen. Also if it is a straight pre-determined figure there probably would be no negotiation. Man U would just pay. 10 million euro is what they would pay for a squad player

Sunderland job? His stock was falling from Seville. Don’t think he will ever reach anywhere near those heights again. Awful at AV. Probably led to lambert having to rip up half a team and starting again.

I must have missed that ‘entertainment’ every time i have seen them.

They have scored the fewest amount of goals of the top 8 PL sides.

I would imagine Mourinho + Mancini will be doing a wee dance if he’s appointed.

Agree – figures of £10-17M being quoted but as you say Jose wouldn’t think twice about walking out and leaving others to deal with the consequences.

Thought Jose was touting for the job when RM beat them at OT – he went out of his way to emphasise that the sending off had handicapped the better side.

I’m sure Moyes signed a £6m a year contract a few years ago. Celtic couldn’t afford to pay anywhere near that.

Whilst I believe Alex Ferguson to be a thoroughly decent human being I came to detest Manure. I for one will be happy he has retired because the one reason for lessening my dislike for Manure will have gone. I hope it is Murinho so my detest can be complete.

  11. not one of fergies former players linked with the job . Its strange that apart from WGS and i suppose to some extent steve bruce they haven’t been successful as managers . oh i forgot big eck :)

I would bet a significant amount of money he will not be MU’s manager.

Mourinho can be ‘effective’ but his behaviour off the field will have ruled him out.

Jorge Mendes will be delighted at this turn of events. It will push Abramovich into going the extra mile required to get the deal to Chelsea over the line.

That’s an accurate quote, but it’s only part of what he said.

This started with Iniesta being asked if he had sympathy with his national team captain after his treatment at the hands of Mourinho and Andrés said he did and defended Iker.

Then Mourinho said what you have said, but the full quote is: “He [Iniesta] is free to say whatever he likes, of course. But what I would say to him is that he should worry about his own club and about his own clubmates in case any time Messi isn’t there they do what they did in the Champions’ League semi-finals, without that brilliant player.”

  15. TMWTL – a big consideration now is the share price Man Utd have now they are listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Announcing Moyes will have a negative effect on the share price. Probably a large negative effect.

    Mourinho on the other hand…..

Sad, but that is where we are at. For that reason alone I would be stunned if soembody with Moyes’ CV got that job.

  16. Celtic_First on

South of Tunis, what I meant to say most of all is that Andrés Iniesta is not a ‘mouthing-off’ kind of person.

  17. From TalkSpurt (I know, I know):

Mourinho has a reported €17M buy out clause in his contract which has 3 years to run.

Can’t see Manure being interested if this is true.

    So guess it’s Moyes then!

  18. mearns 2 milton – Bayern and the other big clubs in Europe are already getting busy tearing Klopp’s Dortmund team apart. It must be depressing to see your CL and league opponents signing one of your best players, before you meet them in the biggest game of the season.

Klopp may have had enough being football prey, and might want to give predator a shot.

Rogueleader – Mourinho’s position at RL is untenable, he’s made sure of that with his recent comments about his players and other clubs who love him. I think that compensation figure will be very much negotiable.

Tarbuck is a Tory and was a well known supporter of Thatcher, so unlikely to be him.

  21. United’s background staff are mainly ex players, Butt, McClair etc. Probably Giggs next. Perhaps they see Moyes as the most likely candidate to carry on that club ethos. However, I have a feeling the Man Utd fans would be underwhelmed with his appointment.

  27. People seem to be hung up on this longevity issue. Fergie stayed for 26 years, so the board will be looking at a similar term, ergo Moyes is being touted. I don’t buy that. The board will be looking for instant success, so Mourinho it is, even if he only stays a few years.

Don’t get me wrong. I would laugh my head off if JM did end up at MU. The sight of all those Chelski fans crying would be pretty enjoyable.
