Bobby and Tommy, men with established priorities

412

You are going to read lots about Tommy Burns, who we lost 10 years ago today, and Bobby Murdoch, the first of the Lions to go, on this date in 2001, so I’ll share an observation on both.

Tommy’s coffin was carried into the church by Ally McCoist and Walter Smith.  Tommy had lots of friends, former team-mates and players, as well as a large family.  There was no shortage of candidates to carry the man’s mortal remains, but in extending the invitation to Walter Smith and Ally McCoist, he left you and me something to live up to.

There can be few more public expressions of an intimate invitation.  How well do you and I reach across the city to others?  I have considered that question, on and off, for almost 10 years.

The only time I met Bobby Murdoch he went straight to asking me what I did for a living.  Then he talked about his wife, Kathleen, and her job.  There were a dozen others in the room, nine of whom were Lisbon Lions, but that was what Bobby wanted to talk about.  His priorities were well established.

Most rodents would be too self respecting to go drinking with Paul Paton.

    Good morning bhoys

I wish I was going to that mass tonight I really do. God Bless his Soul. I did love Tommy the man and feel hes one Celt that gets universal respect from all.

MIT,,I have thought about that question also and have come to the conclusion the Tommy would have told them go eff themselves at tainting his beloved game and called them the cowardly bas^%(ds they are for not meeting him fair and square on the field of play.

I hope you and Seamus Larsson are well.

    Nice sentiment, couldn’t agree more.

  5. God bless Bobby and Tommy!

Bobby is my second favourite all-time Celtic player – behind Jinky and above George Connelly.

Didn’t big Jock say…”when Bobby Murdoch plays, Celtic play.”

When Celtic were drawn against Fiorentina in the Champions Cup qf in 1970, the Fiorentina coach – Bruno Pesaola (an Argentinian-Italian) – came over to take in a Celtic game and afterwards was being interviewed. He raved about Bobby M and referred to him as…”the daddy of the team.” The man who makes the team tick.

    High praise indeed.

  6. On the question of Walter , Ally and EBTs.

I reckon TB would have forgiven both men for their deeds, on the proviso that their penance was to admit the guilt.

I don’t think he would have wanted their medals of trophies, just a simple apology to Scottish football and aknowledgement that they did wrong.

Cheers. My church sits on a hill and in bad weather you simply cant make it.

So I resorted to the webcam mass some weeks in my old chapel in Belfast and was enjoying it seeing some faces I know etc until a couple of women stood beneath the webcam one week and the entire world heard all their gossip broadcast live.

In saying that the church here arent being flexible at all in getting the wee one Christened which Im not happy about.

Will look at that site at some stage. Next month extremely busy, mother coming with 2 nieces to see grandchild.

  10. Some of us have been lucky because we have watched so many greats in our lifetime. Bobby and Tommy were amongst the greatest Celtic players that I have had the honour to watch and I go back to the Tully, Peacock and Evans era.

I only ever spoke to Bobby once and that was in the Celtic team hotel in Estoril on the morning after the game. I wrongly congratulated him on scoring the second goal (that was what it appeared like from my seat). With great humility and a smile he informed me that it was actually Stevie who scored and that his shot was going miles past the goal.

Among the great memories of Tommy , the one that remains forever in my mind was seeing him at Lourdes. He flew in on a private jet on a February morning. Because I had been on an International Committee at the shrine and because I knew many of the sanctuary staff, I had been asked to get Tommy into the Baths and out in quick time, as he was flying home that evening.

After coming out of the Baths, Tommy asked me about candles, so we moved to the candelabra. Usually loads of people are milling round these and it was no different that day. Tommy simply lit his candles and surrounded by people, he stood there absorbed in prayer and was lost to the world for about ten solid minutes. That sight taught me a lot about Tommy the man of faith.

  11. Mahe,

Do they have ‘Parades’ outside ?

There was some sort of parade past Coia’s on Sunday morning as we enjoyed The Champions Breakfast. Feckin’ comical it was. Must have been about fifty elderly ‘peepul’ , all dressed up, looking like they’d been refused entrance to the bingo, and joined the march because it was going in the same direction as the old folks hame.

Delaneys Dunky was very keen to go outside for a puff, just as they were passing by, ???

Both men set examples that we’d do well to emulate.
