Bobby and Tommy, men with established priorities

412

You are going to read lots about Tommy Burns, who we lost 10 years ago today, and Bobby Murdoch, the first of the Lions to go, on this date in 2001, so I’ll share an observation on both.

Tommy’s coffin was carried into the church by Ally McCoist and Walter Smith.  Tommy had lots of friends, former team-mates and players, as well as a large family.  There was no shortage of candidates to carry the man’s mortal remains, but in extending the invitation to Walter Smith and Ally McCoist, he left you and me something to live up to.

There can be few more public expressions of an intimate invitation.  How well do you and I reach across the city to others?  I have considered that question, on and off, for almost 10 years.

The only time I met Bobby Murdoch he went straight to asking me what I did for a living.  Then he talked about his wife, Kathleen, and her job.  There were a dozen others in the room, nine of whom were Lisbon Lions, but that was what Bobby wanted to talk about.  His priorities were well established.

It was great to put a beard to the moniker on Sunday.

Tommy Burns is my only real hero in life. I’ve looked to his example to get me through the hardest times I’ve faced.

So for what you do for that great man to honour his memory I’m hugely grateful and admiring.

Hail Hail as a parting blessing is certainly the future imho!

Alas,Tom Wolfe. Wrote probably the definitive “greed is bad and I can prove it” book in the late 80s. All about how the greedy deserve to crash and burn.

Sold the film rights, watched his pride and joy crash and burn. It doesn’t deserve a remake remodel update, the originals should be compulsory reading and viewing for everyone.

City of Glasgow College last week revoked its decision to allow its own Catholic Chaplain to hold an Ascension Thursday mass for members of staff and students.

The college has a prayer room that can be used by all religions and has previously allowed its Catholic Chaplain to hold religious services on the campus.

The mass, originally scheduled for May 10, had been approved by the college’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) department almost a week before it was due to go ahead.

But those planning on attending the mass were left outraged after an email from the EDI on May 8 announced that an appropriate policy was not in place at the institution in order for them to allow the service to go ahead.

College Chaplain Brother Antony Connelly, who is also a Passionists Brother at St Mungo’s Church in Glasgow , told the Daily Record the move has sparked anger and confusion among Catholics on campus.

  9. Earlier today I decided to look for an address for the Compliance Officer. Not finding one I wrote to info@sfa and received a reply from a Patrick McLaughlin who said he was charged with the task of passing on requests to the Compliance Officer and if I wished to do so let him have any questions.

Accepting that he would pass on my questions, I asked about any further action by the Compliance Officer with regard to Shinnie’s action against Broonie and with regard to his comments after the match on Sunday. Further I asked was any punishment to be considered for the second attack on James Forrest by Naismith? I also mentioned Davies attack and asked if that had been punished. Furthermore I suggested that I thought that attacks on our captain had increased since Levein’s intervention. Again I enquired into any action taken by the Compliance Officer.

I received the following reply. ‘I am afraid I am unable to put the points to the Compliance Officer due to confidentiality and Data Protection.’ Is this just SFA speak for …move over Timmy?

  11. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan on

    Evening All.

Been a busy day with most of it spent in Edinburgh with the banker folk.

First of all great news about Lions Roar. Here is hoping that he is feeling fine and dandy very soon.

Ok it was very late on in the afternoon when I heard about the proceedings issued by the SFA and once i had the phone was busy very quickly with Auldheid and the Sharholders solicitor on for a discussion as to what it all means.

As with all things legal, a set of charges is only a set of charges and it should be remembered that no finding of guilt has as yet been made in relation to these charges. Accordingly, any talk about the appropriate sanction and the consequences of a finding of guilt is very much premature.

Furthermore we do not yet know how the disciplinary committee is going to be constituted. Will it be chaired and staffed from the usual panel of potential members, or will the SFA have the presence of mind to commission a specialist chairman such as a retired law lord sitting with qualified wing men.

Who knows but this part of the process could be very important.

Then we come to the charges. In relation to these, ignore any statement coming from Rangers at the minute. Any diatribe which starts with an alleged allegation as to what they are NOT charged with is a pretty strange one – mind you they have a strange PR department.

So, looking at the charges they officially read as follows per the SFA website:

Notice of Complaint | Rangers FC

    Tuesday 15 May 2018

    (f) behave towards the Scottish FA and other members with the utmost good faith.

    Rule 2

Principal hearing date: Tuesday 26 June 2018

Response date: Tuesday 22 May 2018

I have read an awful lot of comment since this was posted but can anyone point to anything in the charges which specifoes the dates between which these two sets of rules were allegedly breached and in what way?

    I see no such detail.

What I do see is that one charge relates to the rules, regulations and customs of the SFA, UEFA, FIFA and the rulings of the CAS – all of which any football club and their board are deemed to know and must observe.

The second charge relates very specifically to the expected behaviour and conduct of a Scottish Football club in its dealings with every other football club and the various committees of the SFA.

Yet still no detail of the alleged breached and we can only presume that this detail has been provided to Rangers.

However, when considering these two different but similar allegations of rule breaches, I can’t help but thinking is this an enquiry (of the kind that the SPFL and Celtic asked for) but under a different name and a different guise?

The rules allegedly broken are in very wide compass and could include anything.

If you look at the second charge and consider the possible defences of time bar, or the SFA’s failure or inability to take proper action because of a missed date or some other technicality which is used to escape punishment for behaviour that is clearly reprehensible, does it not automatically follow that before any judge can determine that there was a time bar or any such matter like that, he or she must have enquired and heard evidence about the procedures followed, the steps taken or not taken and whether such steps were justified or worthy of criticism in the first place before declaring that further action is time barred?

A successful defence of time bar due to SFA or even UEFA inaction is likely to do nothing other than spark further enquiry.

The focus of Res 12 was not about RFC but about proper SFA Governance and a mere Whitewash, or should that be Whytewash, will not halt the calls and the need for change in governance and compliance.

We have a new broom at the top of the SFA and that new broom should bring a new culture. Hopefully it will be a move away from secrecy and opportunism and be a move towards far greater transparency, legal and procedural consistency, and a departure from the culture of fear that exists which dictates that you can never admit to making a mistake.

All organisations make mistakes – it is covering them up that makes for huge mistakes.

Over the course of sevral years now, I have said on many occasions that all good things come to those who wait. Waiting and doing nothing sometimes is very difficult because everything within you wants to get out and shove and shout but sometimes that is just the wrong thing to do.

This is a marathon and not a sprint. It has always required being dogged, being tactical and to be honest not giving a tuppeny F*** about who you potentially annoy or get on the wrong side of.

The SFA have at long last called an enquiry. It is up to them if they want to conduct it properly or if they want to fudge the issues.

What they should remember is that football fans are not stupid, daft or exist merely to swallow any old rubbish. They are too dedicated to the game, too determined to see fair play win out, and to well connected in terms of resources and professional expertise to be palmed off with either no proper enquiry into perfectly reasonable questions or manipulated and and shallow responses to clear business wrongdoing.

Any numbetr of issues could well arise from these charges and, irrespective of the outcome, I doubt a whytewash will see the end of the affair.

Let’ s see what happens next.

Whatever hapens it will be in the closed season and the PR releases should make for interesting spin.

  17. BRTH you ask about dates and I can see that charge one cites rules of the association 2010-2011. Whereas charge two cites SFA judicial protocol 2011-2012.

I’m guessing rules and protocols are updated each year and therefore that delineates the time of the offences.

You say there is no detail but presume it has been provided to “Rangers”.

So, that is interesting. Who do you think these details were provided to? Sevco (directors) or Oldco (directors)? Perhaps it is the club which faces these charges and not the company.

Accordingly, any talk about the appropriate sanction and the consequences of a finding of guilt is very much premature.”

This is the SFA we’re talking about. There was a time when a set of charges meant going to the press and condemning the respondent weeks before the Judicial Panel Tribunal was even due to sit… Let’s hope no more Whytewashes…

    ERNIE LYNCH @ 5:32 PM,

“Does this not simply confirm that so far as the SFA are concerned they are the same club?”

I’m not sure where the “simply” comes in but I think in August 2012, when the SFA transferred their Rangers FC PLC membership to Sevco Scotland Ltd it confirmed that so far as the SFA are concerned they are a continuation of the Club?”

Of course Sevco Rangers FC have been very partial when it comes to the same Club thing…

When it comes to the Trophies, they are the same Club, when it comes to the debts they aren’t.

    HEN1RIK @ 8:43 PM

“..new Notice of Complaint neglects to properly capture the provisions of prior agreements made between the Club and the SFA.” Whatever can they mean?

When it comes to notice of complaint??

    Kinda difficult Eh!

Firstly, Sevco Rangers don’t detail what agreement they are talking about there. The SFA seem very specific about the Articles of Association they are referring to – so what’s the big secret;) It will be interesting if they produce it as a defence.

Secondly, Sevco Rangers FC have always argued they are the same Club as The Rangers FC Est 1872. In that case if there is a Notice of Complaint against The Original Rangers FC, it’s going to be difficult for them not to accept it… on what grounds could they??

    Hail Hail

  20. What BRTH said. :)

Ive been busy on Twitter fielding questions but BRTH’s reminder is timely, this is about fair governance and hopefully one message to emerge for SFA and clubs is you are accountable, one way or another, but hopefully by a means a damn sight quicker than 7 years.

Good question. the second one is how much?

As a tax payer I’d expect the Government to make their position clear on what they expect from the SFA with regard to tax payer protection.

The notion that the Government cannot get involved in football matters is a cop out.

There has to be some accountability mechanism introduced where the tax payer bears the cost of none.

  22. St Mary’ s Church has been a focal point of The Calton since it opened in 1842. The Church is still in its original building and has seen many important events since opening.

As part of the ongoing renovation programme at St Mary’s we are delighted to announce plans to develop a new St Mary’s Hall. A rebirth of the home of Celtic Football Club. St Mary’s is the historical and spiritual home of Celtic. The Club was founded here on 6th November 1887. The aim of the hall is to enrich the social and pastoral life of those who live, work and visit the Calton. We also want to include the wider community of Glasgow’s East End and the wider community of the Celtic Family. As well as providing a valuable resource in the Calton, we intend to have dedicated museum along with information celebrating the foundational and formative years of Celtic Football Club. Alongside this we intend to continue to achieve the original aims of Brother Walfrid, Celtic’s founding father, to provide a modern day out-reach to the poor and marginalised in our society.

In announcing these plans today, 15th May 2018, we are also remembering one of our own, Tommy Burns, who was another integral link between this Church, the Calton and Celtic Football Club. Tommy died 10 years ago today. The Hall will be dedicated to Tommy Burns as a permanent memorial in the Calton to his contribution as a parishioner of St Mary’s, as a player and as manager of Celtic but, more importantly, as an example of a humble man who as a husband, father and member of our community, lived his life according to the dictates of his faith.

This is a fantastic project but will take a significant amount of work. To kick this off, we have started the Celtic Day One website (www.celticdayone.com), as the vehicle for passing on information and fundraising. We already have some ideas for fundraising and have the embryo of a committee to steer this ambitious project.

We do need more people to come on board, particularly to help with fundraising. We already have some ideas for design and the initial artists impressions from architect Tom Connelly, Elder & Cannon Architects of how the finished hall could look.
