    UEFA Champions League

    Borussia-Park

    Tuesday, November 1, 2016

    BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH…1

    (Stindl 32)

    CELTIC…1

    (Dembele pen. 76)

MOUSSA Dembele’s late penalty secured a share of the spoils for Celtic against Borussia Monchengladbach in Germany to keep their UEFA Champions League hopes alive.

The striker was fouled by Julian Korb in the box as he raced on to a pass in the box. And after referee Manuel De Sousa produced the red card for the Borussia player, the Celtic striker picked himself up and calmly sent goalkeeper Yann Sommer the wrong way from the spot.

The Hoops had earlier trailed to Lars Stindl’s first-half volley but they had also come close themselves to opening the scoring when Scott Sinclair struck the post with a curling shot.

And in the closing stages, they almost capitalised on their numerical advantage and recorded a famous victory when substitute Callum McGregor spurned a late chance.

However, the draw, which leaves Brendan Rodgers’ side on two points in Group C means there is still a mathematical possibility of them reaching the knockout stages of the competition.

Cristian Gamboa came into the starting XI in place of Jozo Simunovic as Brendan Rodgers made one change from the team that triumphed against Aberdeen on Saturday. That switch saw Mikael Lustig move across into central defence alongside Erik Sviatchenko, with Gamboa taking over the Swede’s place at right-back.

In front of a capacity crowd in the impressive Borussia-Park, the home side made the early running, forcing a number of corners, and Emilio Izaguirre was forced to make a vital block to thwart the lively Thorgan Hazard as he pulled the trigger.

But the Hoops survived this opening spell and gradually grew into the game as they started to stroke the ball around the park and probe for openings.

As the Bhoys began to push further forward, however, the German side were able showcase their counter-attacking threat, and Gordon has to race from his line and block Tobias Strobl’s shot after he had raced on to a return pass.

But it was the Scottish champions who came the closest to the opening goal just beyond the midway point of the half as Scott Sinclair curled a shot off the inside of the post from 18 yards, with Sommer rooted to the spot. Unfortunately, for Celtic the ball span to safety and into the grateful arms of Sommer.

The Hoops’ pressing game was also beginning to have an impact on proceedings and Dembele looked to be harshly penalised for a foul as Tom Rogic prepared to bear down on the box.

But just as Celtic were enjoying their most productive period of the game, they were clinically punished at other end as Borussia broke the deadlock. Racing clear down the right Hazard dug out a cross from the byline and it dropped perfectly for Stindl who hammered home a volley from close-range, leaving Gordon with no chance.

That was a severe setback for Brendan Rodgers’ men but they responded by producing the best move of the match to slice through the home defence. After a series of one-touch passes, Dembele had several options as he approached the edge of the box. He elected to pick out Forrest who went down under Stindl’s challenge inside the area, but the referee was unmoved.

Celtic continued to play with enterprise after the interval and only some diligent defending from the hosts prevented Armstrong from playing in Sinclair after James Forrest’s incisive pass.

But as the game opened up, Stindl, Fabian Johnson and Christoph Kramer spurned good chances for

Andre Schubert’s side to double the lead.

Sinclair had a shot charged down for the Bhoys after being played in by Dembele and then the visitors had a lucky escape when Hahn struck the post.

But with game remaining at 1-0, Celtic were still a force to be reckoned with and the ever-dangerous Dembele stung Sommer’s palms with a ferocious shot. And with 15 minutes left on the clock, a compelling contest took another dramatic twist. Dembele was sent tumbling in the box by Korb. The referee sent off the full-back and Dembele took full advantage from the spot.

And as the clock ticked down, it was the Hoops who came closest to securing maximum reward as McGregor was supplied by Patrick Roberts in the box, but he couldn’t find the target from a wonderful position.

As the final whistle blew, however, the great ovation from the travelling support was an indicator of the courageous performance from the Scottish champions, whose hopes of European football after Christmas remain intact.

Celtic escaped Germany with a barely merited point last night in their Champions League group game against Borrusia Monchengladbach. The Germans had to play out the last part of the game a man down after Celtic were awarded a dubious penalty which resulted in unlucky defender Julian Korb receiving his goosestepping orders before Moussa Dembele trundled home the resultant spot-kick.

In a game bereft of skill or composure,as displayed regularly and to stuning effect by Josh Windass when playing for Mark Warbunton’s Sevco cracks, the Bundesliga side had the majority of the chances and pinned back the Scottish champions time and time again. They laid siege to veteran goalkeeper Craig Gordon’s goal for most of the first half and were justifiably, and delighfully, rewarded when Lars Stindl gave them the lead with a well worked effort.

After the break the overrated SPFL side improved slightly but still couldn’t reach the heights The Rangers did when thrashing a top Kilmarnock side the previous weekend to move menacingly into nearly first place place behind the fortunate fenians.

If it wasn’t for the pace, skill, passing, confidence, and belief of the Celtic players, allied to rank bad luck of Borrusia, the second half wouldn’t have been so good for Liverpool-flop Rodgers or his overpaid soldiers-are-we of good fortune. As it was they managed to scrape an equaliser through the otherwise ineffective and not worth very much in transfer value Dembele’s dubiously won penalty, which came totally with the run of play.

The result leaves the hoops at the bottom of Group C on 2 points,a brobdingnagian 17 less than King David King’s 1690 year old superiors have amassed in the SPFL so far this season, and leaves Rodgers’ jaiket on a peg of shoogliness.Which is good because he’s an Irish catholic and doesn’t possess a magic hat.

Celtic play Barcelona next in what should, hopefully,be an absolute mauling for them.Hopefully.

  5. I feel at long last we are learning.

It is unusual that we produce a better performance and result in a European away tie than in the home leg.

    In BR we trust.

    HH.

  6. Incidentally, great coverage on the BT goals show.

Sooooooo good if you are unable to view the full game.

  7. Good morning my friends from a dry, windless clear skied and cold East Klbride.

A great result last night that was very nearly a fantastic result. But still great that our final home match in the group stil leaves us everything to play for. Only 21 more sleeps ;-)

  8. Next season will be a real test of BR’s managerial ability.

He’ll know that, and he’s ambitious, so hopefully he’ll be able to persuade the board to spend enough to take the side up a notch to allow them to compete more consistently at this level.

  9. Maybe just me but I switched TV off bang on final whistle. Was really disappointed and still am. A huge opportunity missed.

Normally a draw away from home in Europe would have me delighted but last night any joy was replaced with frustration and disappointment watching Celtic tippy tap across the back too often after we drew level and they went down to 10 men.

How Calum missed that one clear chance and why we played so much across our defensive line when we could see wee Paddy had the game to rip them a new one. Jesus 30 seconds to go and there we were controlling possession across the back against a team who should have been forced into defending for their lives.

Overall it was a decent display I suppose. Better than usual away stuff and yes I can see improvement at this level. But that was a must win game for us and we had a massive advantage for 15 minutes in which we created 1 chance. Sometimes we need to relearn just to go direct.

    Scott Brown however was immense.

Well done Celtic as I recognise improvement but report card states ‘COULD DO BETTER’.

  10. Good morning fellow Tims from Wegberg. The missus and I really enjoyed the game last night. A great performance by the team and while very happy that we competed and showed what we are capable of, I was very disappointed that we didn’t snatch victory at the end. We are beginning to rebuild our reputation under Brendan.

I don’t know how our fans came across on the telly but our section was rocking.

  11. Not being any kind of “Scientist”,unlike some on here,I was still interested in UEFAs CL payouts.Celtic will receive 26 million. On top of that is the gate money, hospitality and catering, and the 1 million for points already won.If we add in the 3 millionfrom the play off, which we received for qualifying last year,I reckon that all adds up to around 38 million for this years efforts.

I have no doubts BR has already told the Board how much he requires to take us to the next level, and where the money needs to be spent.

Even our Board can not fail to be awed by the riches involved.

  12. MWD

    You are not alone.

Whilst being pleased overall with a good, and slightly fortunate result, I was just as frustrated with the closing quarter of an hour.

I know the Germans made a good few chances immediately after the equaliser and that might have dampened the adventure in our team but, for the final 5, they had retreated into a defensive shell again and we refused to throw the ball into the mix.

We might have felt that this was playing into Westergaard’s strengths but he is just one defender. If we had committed Mikel or Erik to attack, withdrawing Broony or Callum for extra defensive cover, we could have two targets to aim at in the box, Moussa and Erik/Mikel. If they split, Westergaard cannot mark both.

I was frustrated with our final minute settling for the draw which still leaves us as favourites for bottom slot.

We could have recorded our first competitive win on German soil- history bhoys.

So , my pleasure is diluted by disappointment too.

  13. One thing I noticed was the number of our players who slipped on the grass while in possession, particularly in the firs half. Surely somebody should be checking the length of studs required? This has happened in other games also this season and is very frustrating to watch.

  14. If Mc Gregor had shown a wee bit of composure and slipped it under the keeper who did what all keepers do,leave the ground and spread himself, instead of trying to put the ball somewhere it could not go,we would be ecstatic this morning, instead of thinking what might have been.Still most said yesterday they would have been delighted with the draw.Funny old game this football.

  16. Gooooood Morning CQN

My goodness following the world famous Glasgow Celtic is Fun :-)

Have to say looks like those following in Germany have enjoyable experience with our hosts being welcoming

How about this in January ?

Chelsea may be willing to pay some of 29-year-old midfielder Cesc Fabregas’ £160,000-a-week wages in order to push through a loan move in January.(Independent)

We can pay £30k let Chelsea pay the rest

    Hail Hail

  17. Home from Night Shift and reading back, great to see such positivity. I was really lucky at work being able to watch bits of the game as I went about my duties, every TV in the Unit tuned to BT Showcase :))) , wonderful. So good to be a Celtic supporter and as others have said I too have a growing feeling of even better to come from Brendan and our team!!

Putting the best team possible on the pitch is surely financially sensible

The better the quality of players on show, the more fans will turn up. And the more chance of success. And more money to improve the side to start the cycle over again.

With the added bonus that as our profile improves,so does the value of our players. And the possibility of them wanting to stay on.

The other option is to sell four Virgil-value players per year. Which is no option at all.

  20. An ok result and an ok-ish performance .

At present we have too many players who cant quite cut it at CL level. We should of had full points last night.

The 15mins against ten men was a wasted opportunity. We slowed the game right down and didnt get the ball into their penalty box enough.

    Heres my critical player assesment.

Gordon -some good stops ……..but awful distribution

Izzy …….ok ish considering lack of first-team starts

    Sevchentco and Lustic….. ok

    Gamboa……….not ok

    Brown……good but not great.

Armstrong……willing but not a success . Kept slipping over and too many moves broke down with him.

Rogic…..half and half game .some good touches but lost possession too easily.

Forrest……..poor..Seems to specialise in chasing the game and not quite getting there. Cant find space for himself. frustrating

Sinclair…..quite good but crowded out a lot…unlucky with classy shot against the bar.

Dembele…..a player who can operate at this level no problem.

Roberts……looking a bit pissed off at not being a first pick up and looked more dangerous than JF

McGregor…….scurries about to some effect but another who is just not quite there. Chance to win the game bottled.

Henderson ……..not much time and didnt make an impact

  21. No disappointment for me. Absolutely ecstatic with a draw.

Playing against 10 men isn’t easy.

  22. Hugh Bonkle fae Dallas on

Read back last night all the pash about how under Brendan Rodgers we don’t hump it up the park. There was 30 secs to go of a game against 10 men which if we had won would have saw us favourites to go through to the Europa league. But instead we frittered it away on the halfway line because we were scared BMG would hit us on the counter attack? Jesus wept. Would it be acceptable if we called it Plan C or even D?

Nae offence-opinions,eh?-but if every player last night played to your description,we’d have got humped 10-0.

We didnae. We competed well, could have won it.

With time and effort-and trust!-that too will improve.

Right, this is becoming bullying… ;)

  25. Delighted with a draw. 2 points from 4 games in the was could be described as the hardest group we could have drawn.

Here is the list of teams doing worse than us:

    Basel – 1 point

    Ludogrets – 1 point

    Dynamo Kiev – 1 point

    PSV – 1 point

    Rostov – 1 point

Teams who play tonight but are likely to not add to their tally:

    Legia – Nil points

    Club Brugge – Nil points

    Dinamo Zagreb – Nil points

Yes, this season is all about the learning and the dosh, but we’re also giving a decent account of ourselves.

  26. Bamboo, sorry mate but you’re talking garbage. In Scott Brown we had the best player on the park tonight.

  27. Still feeling happy about last night.

My one worry is that folk are now expecting us to strengthen in the coming transfer window. I hope we do, of course. But whom can we likely attract whom we can afford?

We held a Bundesliga team in their “ain midden” (I know!!) with a defence who hadn’t played together before. Says a lot for those players and more about our manager and his backroom staff.

We are quite obviously a better team than last season and, by a long way, the best in Scotland.

Imo, we will only really get to a higher level by regularly playing teams of that higher level. Our current situation cannot properly prepare our players for the CL. We need to be playing regularly in another league set up.

If we look at the likely total income from our CL venture, and take a flyer on next season too,we are looking at c£80m of additional income for those two seasons alone.

Time to use that to the benefit of our future performances. Get the players in to make it work.
