Boyata transformation is beyond belief

840

When we signed Dedryck Boyata, while simultaneously losing loanee Jason Denayer, I heard that bullish comment from Celtic Park “We made Denayer into a regular Belgian international and we’ll do the same for Boyata.”

Teenage Jason Denayer was part of a record-breaking Celtic central defence.  Fast and skilful, there was little chance parent club Manchester City would allow him to extend his stay in Scotland.  Dedryck was older, had played less football, and City allowed him to leave for £1.5m.  The claim that we could make him into a Belgium regular seemed fanciful.

Belgium are the top team in the Fifa rankings.  Getting anywhere near this squad is an achievement, but Dedryck is now a regular fixture.  When Jason Denayer made a late entrance in the game against Iceland last night, it was captain, Vincent Kompany he replaced, not the Celtic central defender.

Dedryck has only been at Celtic three years and the early months of his time here were memorable for an own goal against Malmo and a very poor performance away to Molde.  His transformation is beyond belief.

Good Evening to the Kings of Week 8 ( and the three still waiting to find out if they’re invited to the Party that is Week 9 ).

Euro fixtures successfully negotiated on another tough weekend, it’s back to domestic bliss next weekend, as the numbers dwindle further and the weary march on towards ultimate glory and enough dosh to buy 635 liquidated football clubs playing out of Govan.

Fixtures for next weekend are listed below. Very unusual, but Week 9 fixtures all take place on Saturday 24th November, so no room for procrastinators next weekend……

  5. Survived and enjoyed Belfast, Great seeing my boy and his wife settling really well. The parts of the city I seen were like Glasgow in the 80s,there has been very little investment or regeneration, that most big cities have had in the last 25 years. I mean no disrespect to any guys on here who live there,Belfastbhoyjoe, thanks for chat yesterday. HH

Bobby Petta reminds me of Ajax (1-3) and his fellow Dutchman Ricksen getting taken apart at Celtic Park…

  8. Boaby Petta

Pleasure to be at two of his best games….Ajax away, auld huns 6-2…fekn magic.

  9. Vaguely remember from Tommy gemmells book Scotland v England and Bobby Charlton was spraying the passes.

Mr gemmells decided to take matters into his own hands and attempted to clatter Mr Charlton.

Charges in and not only did Charlton piroutte(sp) but also had presence of mind to say “ole” as he did so leaving Tommy to thrash at fresh air.

Great we story told against himself and in praise of total awareness of his opponent during such a high profile occasion.

  10. Vogue-I think that was his only two good games?

Thought beep beep was the star man in holland ?

I was in Amsterdam Arena in the seat in front of Mr and Mrs Wim Jansen in their Celtic scarves gifted by our Knightswood crowd. Didier Agathe was motm that night. His best game for Celtic. Big Sutton bullied two Ajax Centre Halves rotten.

Did you not take in the Austria game at Windsor park ?( me as well ) some parts of the city e.g. loyalist working class could do with cash injection..their own politicians must take blame as nationalist/ republican counterparts were instrumental in achieving better housing and infrastructure.Enjoyed the chat with you and comforting to know your son and his wife have settled.

  13. Many years ago there was a program on the telly discussing football fans and their songs I believe the then huns did not figure. I think it was hosted by Phil Differ and Dougie Vipond. Dougie Vipond said his favourite and most original song at the time was:

    ‘There’s only one Bobby Petta

He was shite now he’s better

    We took him to Mass

    And now he’s world class

    Walking in a Petta wonderland’

  14. Did Bobby Charlton play for Celtic v Liverpool in a friendly match. Sure he did. Cannae remember time or occasion?

  15. Delaneys,

Just received a mail from some ‘Mad’ German bloke who’s heading back over to Scotland to catch a couple of games in December. He was asking after you. Think he’s going to games at Livingston and Ayr United weekend of 14-16 December. Might be in your neighbourhood.

I cancelled my trip to Amsterdam in ’82 as my niece and god-daughter was born. On her wedding day, I stood in for her departed father and gave her away.

in my speech at the reception I told the guests of the day she made her appearance into the world and how it was the greatest day of my life…………….. especially when George McLuskey scored with a couple of minutes to go.

It brought uproar to the proceedings. :-)

  19. DD, number should end 327, unless he’s changed it.

On the other hand , Corbyn is unelectable , even with the Tories in such disarray.

Not so. Since 2008 opinion polls are less and less accurate. All over the Western world people are unwilling to trust ‘establishment’ parties and willing to take their chances with the radical right or left. This has led to success for populist nationalists like Trump and Orban in Hungary. It has also led to the near extinction of the centre left in France, Spain, Italy and Germany. The only left wing parties still thriving are the likes of the radical Podemos in Spain, Syriza in Greece and Corbyn’s Labour Party.
