Brendan delighted with window as Celtic business complete

691

Brendan Rodgers declared himself delighted with his first transfer window as Celtic manager, which is now over, after the additions of Kolo Toure, Scott Sinclair, Moussa Dembele, Dorus de Vries and Cristian Gamboa.

Toure, Dembele and Sinclair, the managers three primary targets, were acquired early, while de Vries and right back, Gamboa, were added recently. Deals went close to the wire today but the hoped-for midfield player (which was never James McCarthy) didn’t materialise.

A permanent deal for a (known around these parts) central defender to backfill Jozo Simunovic, who was wanted by Torino, couldn’t be tied up either, so Torino also look to have missed their target.

You’ll hear direct from the manager soon enough but he’s got the calibre of recruit he wanted – which he didn’t know would be possible three months ago.

There was never anything possible to make a formidable Champions League group look any easier, but we’ll compete at the top table, and we’ll wipe the floor with all-comers domestically.

More tomorrow.

…. and I canae wait for you to justify saying my ambition/hope doesn’t go beyond domestic fitba! Haha!

Hey, I’ll not be one to givr you a hard time. I admire your strength and often enjoy your posts….. although I do wish you’d cheer up a wee bit! Hey, it’s your blog as much as theirs I suppose.

    Enjoy the Celtic! :)

  2. Nothing that happened tonight has anything to do with PL.Except that is,if you are one of the blame everything that happens on PL brigade.BR had the chance to get what player he wanted.Seems that was Mc Carthy.THere were around 4 teams in for him, none of them got himTeams who could pay a lot more than us.That is not down to anyone at Celtic, that is down to Everton.

Look at some of the prices tonight for midfielders. Some guy no one has ever heard off from Lorient,13 million.Sissoko,30 million, the boy that played for Ireland,12 million. We are like Goldfish swimming with Sharks.BR knew his budgets. If the player was available,we would have signed him.Lets stop the blame game and be truthful. We have had a great 4 months,January is only 4 months away.

Doc, sorry that was a tongue in cheek comment making light of last night, hence the :-)

CQN is never a good place during an International break, the same people with a look at me attitude trying to take the blog into groundhog day, seen this movie too many times before and the ending is the same. What really rips their knitting is that Paul67 doesn’t bite no matter how derogatory they become, probably hoping for a ban and martyrdom….

  4. Captain Beefheart on

Tim reaper, we can still build for future campaigns though. Instead we will, as usual, sell and scramble around for players during qualifiers.

Let’s pray Dem belle is up to it.

  5. neg

ok mate. I must have been wrong. anyway here’s how I know transfer day can work. manager A and manager B agree a price – which is often fiction. if it goes through the agent involved makes sure that everyone is happy at the club/fans expense. if however the buying club smells a rat the agent can put out the story that the club is dragging its feet – as usual.

on a different not – has anyone ever found out what souness’ EBT was for?

on a different matter again – how much did Christian Daley get sold for?

    tet

agree. imo br has the old dd ear, i hope so or this time we will be up the creek.

  7. The hoped for midfielder didn’t materialise? Blasted teleport!

I should be used to it by now, but I’m disappointed. With reference to the post, “hoped for” and “materialise” are passive terms almost absolving Celtic of the responsibility and accountability for finding suitable players and negotiating deals to bring them through. Celtic are a well run club and I accept that…up to a point.

I get the distinct impression that there was initial enthusiasm to kick on at the end of the season, which was expressed through the signing of a marquee manager. Then, once the 50000 season tickets were sold, the annual CL gamble (don’t spend and see if we can qualify) actually paid off for one, and suddenly we’re into the world of:

“Hey, hiya Brendan, oh, just LOVING that tan, big man – Broonie, huv ye seen this man’s tan!? – and where’s that smile – aaargh, stop Brendan, I’m blind – aaaahhh, ho ho…yeah, anyway, look, we were just thinking; know how we’ve qualified for the CL, yeah? Well, we know that oooobviously no way are we getting out that group, yeah? Still, the money’s in the bank (nod, wink) – you totally aced qualifying, by the way, I am not worthy, only one Brendan Rodgers lol! So, look, with you at the helm and the awesome players you spotted and brought in, we’ll cruise the league – probably the treble, eh? Do you see what I’m saying? Course you do – brain like yours you’re way ahead of me – so, start scouting players for NEXT year just now. Mean time, we’ll manage the fans as always, just make sure you tell them another signing would have been nice, but only at the right price, yadda yadda. Lovely Jubbly. Awesome. Right, I’m off to wind up Paul Murray. Laters, big man”

  8. TURKEYBHOY on 31ST AUGUST 2016 11:49 PM

The signings we have brought in that have played look good and an improvement on who they are replacing. The manager looks like he’ll prove to be the best signing of all.

The disappointment of many is that we didn’t go that bit extra to sign the central midfielder that the manager said he wanted.

At this moment we are in a position where we have the money. £30m from CL, £5m+ for three pre season friendlies, two new shirt sponsorship deals, 10k increase in ST sales and three new kits on sale and supposedly flying off the shelves. If we didn’t splash out during this window when will we?

  9. turkeybhoy.

there are other shops than england.did not want us to spend 15ml but surely we should have our net spread a wee bit further. just a holding mid fielder.

  10. I posted earlier when the window was still open.

    Brendan obviously reads CQN

    ‘GG on 31ST AUGUST 2016 3:56 PM

Personally I don’t care if we sing ANOTHER player this window.

A goalkeeper, two defenders, two midfielders and a striker so far.

Will another midfielder make a difference in the SPFHell?

Will another midfielder help us qualify for the EL or latter stages of the CL?

I think the answer to both is a resounding NO.

Our manager and back room staff will have their work cut out incorporating 6 new players into an already bloated squad.

Let’s blood youngsters like McGregor, Henderson etc during the season particularly following difficult European ties

  11. I remberer Saturday afternoons getting on CFC bus Swiss Lounge Falkirk, circa 1975/76 telling Mia Mamma I was just out and about. Gave up nearly as every time I went we got beat.

Remember going to cup final Mr Coopers finest. on the train from Central, me two mates, rest train, themselves. Scary times, don’t know how we survived. Hey was the seventies

I do do not really care about any other team and why they do, I will support any Scottish temperature in Europe.

Apart for an living, contrived, waste of excrement.

James Forrest on 31st August 2016 11:54 pm

Aye ok James I might have taken that too far :-)

Up till yesterday I was very pleased with our dealings so far and having watched the guys bedding in thought we had a good window. It’s this SSN ticker tape shite that really bugs me, do your work early get the majority of identified players in and you’re a schmuck, you really should be waiting on transfer deadline date to pay over the odds or scramble about chasing duds.

If you don’t get all your targets then that’s business, we don’t always get what we want, but to beat the club up because we didn’t excite Jim White pisses me right off…

  13. the post saying we are goldfish among sharks. good analogy.

my question. is PL useless or is he the one keeping the Sharks away?

the truth is we don’t know enough to know!

  14. You can’t say we undertook the usual CL gamble! Had we done so we’d have been lucky to have been in the Europa league, Sinclair, Dembele and Toure are significant investments in terms of wages and fees.

Yes I’d have liked more but as others have pointed out its a mental market out there. Our CL windfall wouldn’t have funded the Lorient guys transfer fee plus wage.

Ad in Jan and prepare for next years qualifiers, that’s where we are.

  15. The tarantulas love a transfer window like that – lets them use Celtic to release that pent-up angst in an intense whiny-bitch circle-jerk.

Best advice for PL – open a post transfer-window brothel; business would be brisk on a night like this. Particularly down the BDSM dungeon annex given some of the posts you read…

We needed a midfield fulcrum for the CL, didn’t get one; disappointing, but the shotgun’s staying in the cupboard; No need to go full-on Cobain for the sake of one late-window wish.

No need also for bullshit, Celtic; I reckon you took a look at the CL group, rated our progression chances as below zero and decided to stash the cash for domestic use come January – new signings with a view towards next season’s qualification.

That’s fair enough. None of us on here are party to the inner wheelings and dealings. Who knows how close or far we were from signings? Who cares now? Milk’s spilt. Get over it, get on with it.

So hold the placebo, P67 and let the greeters greet to the tune of their own conjecture.

Xavier Hernández Creus still out there, btw, Celtic, ready to be rescued from the middle east. Rules are different from Euro window. Just sayin’…

  16. ....PFayr ..SACK THE BOARD on

BR delighted to have qualified for the CL and thereafter got feck all money to spend … Aye right

    Same as it ever was

As for CQN … The most succulent of lamb

  17. When the CL draw was made, who thought we would not finish bottom?

What has changed?.Some saying”We took in 30 million”Sissoko went for that alone. We are minnows.Get it into your head.We buy what we can.Anyone ever thought that BR will try again in January for Mc Carthy when Everton see a bit of sense. As far as I read he wants only to come to Celtic. Not this window, hopefully the next.

  18. My tuppenceworth…

Been disillusioned with the SFA ( & the PLC) for 4 years now.

But for the first time in 4 years my heart is full of Hope.

I love watching a team grow over time.

Did not feel that Hope till now.

Roll on the Future. Trust in BR. I do, cannot help myself.

I agree, and wanted another midfielder in,but its not always possible.Maybe BR only wants Mc Carthy, who knows. If that was the case,it was not Celtics fault we did not get him,it was Everton playing hard ball. Not only with us.We will see.

  22. Paul67…

Do you have a link to Brendan expressing his ‘delight ‘ with such a wndow?

  24. As forecast we did not buy anyone.. “Nearly got him “pish. Last 2 years didn’t qualify so said we couldn’t afford to strengthen. This year??

  25. We were hammered last week by a rubble sh team from Israel..now we are good enough to play Barca… Every point geqts you cash… Would be worth strengthening just for that alone

  27. Some of the comments on here tonight, mentalists. The negative stuff is a bit of a drag to read.

Chin up lads, spaghetti music at CP and a couple of the best teams there are coming to play.

Sure beats getting excited about Murderwell beating zombies in a play off.

Messi is coming back to his second favourite ground.

    We are scoring goals.

    Style of play looks better.

BR has the luck it seems that wee RD never got.
