Brendan delighted with window as Celtic business complete

691

Brendan Rodgers declared himself delighted with his first transfer window as Celtic manager, which is now over, after the additions of Kolo Toure, Scott Sinclair, Moussa Dembele, Dorus de Vries and Cristian Gamboa.

Toure, Dembele and Sinclair, the managers three primary targets, were acquired early, while de Vries and right back, Gamboa, were added recently. Deals went close to the wire today but the hoped-for midfield player (which was never James McCarthy) didn’t materialise.

A permanent deal for a (known around these parts) central defender to backfill Jozo Simunovic, who was wanted by Torino, couldn’t be tied up either, so Torino also look to have missed their target.

You’ll hear direct from the manager soon enough but he’s got the calibre of recruit he wanted – which he didn’t know would be possible three months ago.

There was never anything possible to make a formidable Champions League group look any easier, but we’ll compete at the top table, and we’ll wipe the floor with all-comers domestically.

More tomorrow.

Celtic have brought some quality on board…..agreed

    Toure…….Great player in his EPL pomp…..Nowadays…SPL Quality…9/10….CL Quality 6/10

Sinclair…..Never reached anthing near pomp in EPL…SPL Quality 9/10…..CL Quality 6/10

DEMBELE……GONNA BE THE BEST OF THEM ALL….FUTURE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNER ….UNFORTUNATELY NOT WITH US

    all about opinions..

  2. Henrik, Lubo, and DiCanio were brought in for very little.

I think we just got lucky.

    Andy Carroll cost £35M.

If our targets were not available at an affordable price, we were right to pull out.

There will be a new guy available in January that we will be delighted with.

  3. We are where we are, I don’t doubt BR tried his best to tempt players to play in the CL with us. It’s their loss greedy cuts, EFF them. You can’t put money on the mantelpiece.

  4. It seems the malcontents have all gone to bed.

It’s an open invitation to CQN but if you don’t like the host and his views there’s nothing wrong with disagreeing with him, but labeling him a board shill is beyond the pale.

I’m off on a wee strop.

I tried to temper expectations only 5 days ago when we had posters talking about 10 and 15M spends.

Macjay was one poster happy to spend 15M before the window closed and now Macjay is happy we have spent 400 grand.

    Don`t quite get that.

Nevertheless , I`m just happy to be part of the Celtic nation and family and with the way we are travelling.

    Improvement .

  6. My view of it is that if our improvement over the next two windows matches what we’ve managed in this one then we will be in a very good place.I would have liked a signing but it wasn’t imperative, imho.

Brendan’s only months into the very big job he had on his hands and so far he’s doing not too bad. He’ll see us alright.

Transfer deadline day’s a nonsense, anyway.A new way for Sky to big up something that’s far less than they make it out to be,they’re good at that.It actually becomes unwatchable for me because of the slavish worship of money;£15m…£20m…£30m…total spend over a billion.Ffs,it’s nauseating.

And most of the buys are overrated and will go onto careers of cash-infused ordinariness at Stoke,West Brom,Crystal Palace etc. in the best marketed league on the planet.Don’t believe the tripe.

    Window shmindow,glad it’s shut.

  8. OK put your hands up if…..

You rejoiced at the transfer dealings of Celtic FC in the Summer of 2006

You rejoiced at the transfer dealings of Celtic FC in the Summer of 2007

You rejoiced at the transfer dealings of Celtic FC in the Summer of 2012

Those were the 3 seasons we went on to manage qualification from a CL group. In the first of those we beat Man U and Benfica and we only lost to AC in extra time. In the second we beat Shakter, AC and Benfica. In the 3rd we beat Spartak home and away and had the wonderful 2:1 win over Barca.

Yet in each of those windows we were told we had bought and sold badly, failed to speculate or accumulate, and we were even told that Rangers were managing their transfers better than us.

Was there any relationship or positive correlation between our spending in transfer windows and our achievement in European competition? I am not aware of any.

Victor Wanyama was a project bought from an obscure Belgian team- his purchase was greeted with – So What?

Tony Watt was a £100k punt from Airdrie- no big welcome or fuss was made about him

WGS signing of Paul Telfer was positively derided

Aidan McGeady was a one trick pony who should have been punted for less than £1m

But all of these unheralded and unsung singings and unsold players contributed to our Last 16 achievements along with other unheralded buys and players like the Sieve Brothers – McManus and Caldwell- who were also recommended for punting, like Aiden, with a free taxi ride to the airport thrown in by CQNrs too.

Now I cannot promise that Dembele, Sinclair, Toure, Ajer, Gamboa, and De Vries are the buys that will see this replicated. After all, if there is no positive correlation between our spend and our Euro impact I have no grounds for saying it will or it won’t

But neither do the guys who are saying this transfer inactivity (only the 6 or so in- if you discount PJ Crossan) and the 6 or so out (some inactivity that!) have any grounds for declaring this a failure.

We are in a tough group- where I expect we will be favourites, perhaps, in only one of our 6 CL ties. Even if we had bought both Xavi AND James McCarthy, I guess we would still be favourites in only 1 of those 6 ties.

But this club does magic and it punches above its weight.

It is far too early to proclaim if this has been a success or failure.

  12. the glorious balance sheet on

Just out of interest, I wonder what kind of transfer business the likes of Dinamo Zagreb, ludogorets, Legia Warsaw and Copenhagen have completed since confirming their place in the CL?

And also how much money they get, relative to Celtic, for reaching the CL?

Would also be interesting to know how many of those teams are as dominant domestically as Celtic and hence have every right to reasonably expect another crack at the CL next season? Zagreb perhaps, not sure about the others.

For me, this transfer window was every bit as much about preparing for next year’s CL qualification campaign as it was about this season’s CL group stages. We all know how difficult it is to get good players in in the January window. Good players are competing for trophies mid-season, clubs are reluctant to let them go. I worry that the next window will be a damp squib and next summer we will be scrabbling around for a replacement for toure with brown a year older too. The spine of our team needing reinforced or replaced, making CL qualification a huge ask.

This is massive for Celtic – we need to be in the CL group stages next year as the 12/13 season where we picked up 16 coefficient points (our average over last 5 yrs is 5 coefficient points per season) falls off and unseeded status in the qualifiers beckons. For the same reason, any points we get on the board in the group stages this year are priceless.

Despite the riches unlocked, CL qualification for Celtic generally doesn’t automatically mean signing established players with decent European experience ( even Europa league group stages level). It means signing projects (Bitton, Ambrose), discards being nudged out the door by their clubs (miku, lassad, pukki) or guys unproven in top flight football (Loovens). All of whom had barely any European group stages experience behind them.

The last time we went for players of stature/ European experience on the back of having guaranteed CL football was probably 2006 when we brought in jarosik, vennegoor of Hesselink and gravesen. I’d argue that the first of these 2 pitched in with important CL goals and performances that were vital in helping us make the last 16 in 06/07 and 07/08.

Those days seem like a long way off now. Brendan has his work cut out.

Who knows what goes on at Celtic. £3m or £4m spent this week might have made PL’s life a lot easier and given our increased turnover I doubt if it would have affected his infamous bonus.

I don’t think people are upset at notion of success or failure in transfer window.

It’s the constant of never trying to address glaring weaknesses in our team.

If Pl’s bonus is for consistency then it’s deserved.

No player can guarantee instant success.

But when the central two were consistently failing away in Europe an attempt to rectify would have been a start.

We have been close to being a good team so many times in Lawless tenure but parsimony has always seen us just short of that.

i was not expecting a huge spend as some had stated but a reasonable amount to give us a fighting chance was not unreasonable with the huge increase in income the club will have this season.

We have great potential in our youth so an experienced central midfielder would have helped the youngsters to come through.

The board lack the vision required to take us forward.

The last few seasons i have often stated our problems on the field were due to us being purely a reactionary team.

Brendan has started to rectify and make us more proactive but in Israel we returned to oour old reactive ways with almost calamitous results.

We need a proactive board but unfortunately they seem purely reactive .

  22. A wee bit of typo there.

The point being….ffs the Celtic board, we have a manager that can bring things to our club as witnessed.

It’s not since the Martin o’ Neill days has my kids and others I know been choking to go and watch Celtic.

    Get a grip.

  23. So we didn’t buy Paul McStay.

We have never been able to buy him.

Lets give Ryan or Kristoffer a chance.

  24. Yes, disappointed no new players today. Still, overall very happy with our progress since Brendan arrived…….our Champions League prospects look very difficult…………….so best to build for the long term, no loanees. But, please buy Paddy Roberts……..he gets us.

Have a feeling that Jozo will be a stand out player this year, Torino may have to pay double next year.

    Hail all Tims

Yes, very good post, however you do miss the point somewhat.

We have a weak area of our team that needed strengthening, we have failed to attempt to fix it.

It’s not about spending money, I would have been delighted with a bosman or loan as long as it was an improvement, even if temporary.

Time will tell how costly that will be.

  30. I’m glad to finally join the fray after years as a long time lurker, though I imagine I’ll be only an occasional poster who’s excited with the Rogers revolution – put me in the happy clapper, political lightweight clique.

I originally tried to get set up on Monday as were dealing with a lot of troll discussion and some distinctly agenda posters in Paul’s fine blog, our blog. I wanted (and still do) to add just another ‘regular’ Tim’s opinion into the fray – especially as the blog gets less Celtic focused during international weeks.

Since we had the deadline today, it’s good to see hoops talk topping the agenda though I do share the sentiments of many that this feels like something of an opportunity missed.
