Brendan juxtaposition, but for the grace of God

432

You will have noticed minds elsewhere have recently turned to the most difficult question in Scottish football, how will Celtic’s inextricable domination of Scottish football be stopped? If you have been reading CQN for as long as I’ve been writing it, you’ll know the information you should consult on this question is the financial fundamentals.

Celtic’s domination was assured since well before it was predicted here (in 2004). Our only opponent worthy of the name was indulging in an orgy of irresponsibility. While the eventual outcome was more delightful than any of us dared hope, the consequences for the Scottish title were always going to end up the same way.

Celtic just needed to stave off the desire to join the lemmings, keep to a responsible budget, and their long-term outcome was assured.

But this is not the issue most commentators ponder when considering how Celtic will be clawed back into the pack, all they can see is a manager with the apparent Midas touch. While Brendan is here, the story goes, it’s not even worthwhile discussing Celtic’s domination.

I agree with this point, although I could add that Ronny won two leagues more than comfortably, Neil won three, and when Brendan eventually reties due to old age, we’ll be very capable of recruiting an effective talent.

There’s been a fascinating juxtaposition this week on the subject of Brendan as he secured his first title as Celtic manager. 11 months ago, when Ronny announced he was leaving, Peter Lawwell drew up his targets. Two names were at the top of the list, Brendan, and now-Sunderland manager, Davie Moyes. Both were interviewed and both knew each other was under consideration. I’m pretty sure Celtic were prepared to sign up the first one who would commit.

11 months on and, from 100 miles away, life seems to be disentangling for Davie Moyes. The jocular threat to slap a female reporter is systematic of a man who is losing control. After a promising honeymoon period at Sunderland, his team is destined for relegation, most probably as bottom of the division.

There is a haunting realisation in the North East that, like a struggling swimmer who has bobbed below the waterline a few times, the next time they are under could be a great deal more consequential.  Moyes’ reputation has taken more than a slap.

I remember Davie as a player (splay-footed and unconvincing), and wanted his as Celtic manager when Gordon Strachan resigned. His decade at Everton provides ample evidence of his genuine talent. These are the things my mind turns to when his name is mentioned.

When Brendan hears Davie’s name, what chance he thinks, “There but for the grace of God………”

We’ve got a great manager, but he knows he’s got a great job.

  1. PARKHEADCUMSALFORD,

    The film was CABARET.

    ” Tomorrow Belongs To Me”

Was indeed The Sensational Alex Harvey Band ( SAHB), one of favourites from a long time ago, I saw them 6/7 times, absolutely superb live band. Funny enough, their live gigs were like a “CABARET”, As Alex and the boys really enjoyed entertaining the crowd, it was at times like a musical theatre.

    Alex Harvey RIP

Perhaps Celtic’s facebook page should have read as, ” Tomorrow Belongs to Celtic” ? I won’t get upset about the way they have stated it.

  2. !BADA BING!

    I saw that too!

I’ll just check the script from “Cabaret” to make sure there are no upsetting bits in it.

  3. Tomorrow belongs to us or tomorrow belongs to me, doesn’t matter to me. They are both silly straplines that mean nothing to the majority of the support

It , tomorrow belongs to us, is presumptuous and self aggrandising. The sort of statement that would sit well with the currentMan Utd or Chelsea approach to football.

I dislike when our club makes steps towards that type of bollocks.

Still been another good day for the Hoops. HH

That clip was “tomorrow belongs to me”.

Tomorrow belongs to us, is not the same.

    ###

Yeah because the shift from singular to plural completely changes the sentiment and therefore the associations and connotations of the phrase.

It was crass, and no amount of uber loyalty is going to change that.

I noticed that Mike in Toronto was on during the week posting he has taken the Dandy Dons in Goals For Shay this weekend, best of luck MiT at least I can cheer your team on this week :-)

Which is not possible all the time :-)

  6. ERNIE

    You are joking!

You need to get out more.

Maybe less of us would think you are a troll.

There are a few, you must admit.

This is not meant to be personal abuse.

But if it floats yer boat, I’m sure the Mods will do there bit for common decency.

Would I be right in thinking you weren’t aware of the song, or the movie, before now?

  8. ERNIE

Yes. But I don’t think that would make any difference tonight.

Can we never now say “tomorrow belongs to us”?

Because of words contained in a musical?

  9. Fantastic news today about BR. Shuts the SMSM right up. No more spanners in the works about our manager but I’m sure they will try and find another one very quickly.

I’m all for differences in opinion but I do struggle with CQNers finding a negative about the 4 year contract or the Celtic media communication.

  10. If the undernoted folk wouldn’t mind submitting their Round 3 choice for Goals Fos Shay 2 I’d be deeply grateful.

I’m with you on this, folks getting their knickers in a twist over a song in a musical, it’s the sort of thing huns are offended by.

It’s not a great marketing strapline.

  13. ERNIE

    I am 67 years old.

I have a university degree, and other professional qualifications.

I run my own (up to now) successful business and my family life is great.

I’ve no idea what a marketing strapline is.

Mibbe my life has been a total failure but you’ve put me right, or wrong.

  14. Even for me the boards move on Brendan was fantastic. A real slap,in the face for the Scottish media. For Scottish society in general and of course the Huns. My god it even feels like ambition. Keep going the board. Are you maybe learning.

However depressingly paul67 seems ever more polarised and depressing. His sense of superiority and complacency are very reminiscent of another group of supporters. His polarisation of anyone who could easily point out the blatant failing of the board around poor Ronny etc is quite frankly beneath him.

We should all be happy today. It’s a genuine winning move.

But complacency and arrogance sadly aren’t too far away.

And Paul if you want a proper debate about this. Let’s do it.

  15. ernie lynch

Whether or not it was crass is a topic I would enjoy discussing with you over a pint.

    JJ

PS I can see why it would be so considered; I can also see why it shouldn`t be. That is why I would enjoy `debating ` over a pint.

  16. Neganon2

I have been critical enough of you in the past so let me compliment you on your self awareness in:

“Even for me the boards move on Brendan was fantastic. ”

Made me smile ( In a good way . ).

‘I’ve no idea what a marketing strapline is.’

Nor, it would seem, does Celtic’s PR department.

  18. Taking a lady down to Hydro this evening,we passed the city chambers, the magnificent Lisbon Lions were having there photos taken.

Tooted my horn a few times at the Bhoys, lady asked “Who’s that?”

Told her ,first british /non Latin/Northern European team to win the big cup all of 50

    years ago.

She replied “and people still remember that?”

“Who you going to see tonight?” The Who ,you remember them.

  19. Neganon

Agree with you re the point about arrogance ……. It is our biggest enemy right now. As a club and amongst our support… Pre the last game with Sevco at Celtic Park was case in point. . .

The club should avoid promoting it.

Although we have to enjoy these times. These are great Celtic supporting times. For folk to be researching old Liza Minelli films to find something to have a go at our board about suggests we are in a good place methinks ….

  20. Tomorrow belongs to us, as Philbhoy correctly pointed out is totally different to Tomorrow belongs to me.

In Spain there are words that are scarily close to each other and mean very different things, a bit like in britland as well.

Cerdo and Cerado, add a letter, one is a pig and the other is closed, a bit like us and me I reckon :-)

I get the arrogance bit, but the rest is in the land of make believe, you will find a connection anywhere if you want.

  21. Hot smoked. Nothing wrong with being critical. I was so busy with work I didn’t see the Brendan news till I was in the pub talking to a pal this evening. It’s a ballsy genuinely brilliant move.

I am genuinely delighted. Haven’t seen a move like this from Celtic since appointing MON.

Burnley 67 It is laughable to me that paul67 prostrates himself before lawwell while conveniently ignoring last seasons Scottish cup humiliation. There was no need for that debacle. It was and remains humiliating for all of us. His salivating at the board is at best pathetic.

That said. Well done the board today.

    Keep it up.

We are still watching and at least some of us are willing to challenge you.

    ###

Other than the fact that one is in the singular and the other is in the plural what’s the difference?

Are they not saying exactly the same thing?

If that wee guy in the Hitler Youth had been singing Tomorrow Belongs To Us instead of Tomorrow Belongs To Me would it have been any the less sinister?

Can you not just accept that whoever came up with that strapline has, doubtless in all innocence, made a blunder?

  23. Goooood evening CQN

Brilliant newson Brendan, so congrats to Celtic

For me really dissapointing news on season ticket increase .

Celtic recently announced record profits, why the need to increase season ticket prices ?

Maybe they should have announced all fans with season tickets will get into all games, and not be selective on 2 specific games

Spoils a good news day for Celtic, well does for me

  25. Hi Bhoys

A storm warning was issued by Celtic today for all the media and huns out there.

Let’s enjoy the good vibes and rub their noses in it.

    Joe Cocker – There’s a Storm Coming

    KEEP THE FAITH

If you’re not having a good day today after this announcement don’t worry there’s still time to go oot for a bevvy.

  26. English is a foreign language for me. I thought “Tomorrow belongs to us” is excellent line to be marketing slogan for Celtic. This could be inspiring motto for the young at the club.

What do I know? “Cabaret”? It’s really cabaret. We need to mention too that the Michelles of the Resistance don’t like it because it sounds similar to Herr Flicks “Hello Brittain, now you belong to us”.

  27. ERNIE

It was only a blunder if he’d seen the MOVIE!!!!

    Time for my bed.

  28. Ernie

    No I can’t.

If you choose to get offended, fine, you really need to get out more.

There are people blowing the smithereens out of each other in the name of freedom and you are stamping your feet about a strapline that nobody gives a toss about.
