Brendan Rodgers appointed Celtic manager

1136

Brendan Rodgers today became the 18th manager in Celtic’s history. Rodgers, 43, managed Liverpool for three years until October, after guiding Swansea to the English (and Welsh) Premier League in 2011. He previously managed Reading and Watford.

His appointment is unquestionably the most popular since the arrival of fellow Irishman, Martin O’Neill, 16 years ago. Known for his belief in playing attacking, possession-based football, he will bring a force of personality to the club and to Scottish football.

Rodgers occupied the top position on Celtic’s wanted list at the start of the month, but the desire to sign him up was tempered by the belief that attracting a manager of such a profile to Scotland would be difficult. My understanding is that as soon as talks got underway in earnest, it was clear neither party would let the opportunity slip away.

I’m delighted at the appointment. The club already feels reinvigorated.

Welcome to Celtic, Brendan. Let’s get on with the job.

Will Brendan have the gravitas to attract players from Accrington Stanley?

I always think a good measurement of any Celtic news is how does your average Hun feel

Well at this moment in time – sick as a pig, no more than that, really really sick, gut wrenching sick, suicidal sick

    Meaning great appointment Celtic

    Really great appointment

  5. Afternoon all,

Brendan Rodgers being Celtic manager? Who would have thought?

A great appointment that will unite the Celtic family. Well done to all that made this happen.

I am sure Brendan will be as successful as our previous 2 Irish managers :)

I look forward to the new era, this one being the Brendan Voyage :)

    Hail Hail

  6. Amazing what can happen when it dawns on the Great Absentee that he should have been paying more attention.

    Welcome to Paradise Brendan

A truly ambitious signing by CFC I guess that is the downsizing over :)

Here is what Suarez said about our new coach

Luis Suarez has credited Brendan Rodgers for helping him become a better player – as the former Liverpool boss is lined up to take charge at Celtic.

The Scottish champions have interviewed Rodgers twice and majority shareholder Dermot Desmond confirmed last night the new boss could be named by the weekend.

Roy Keane had been the earlier favourite to take over from Ronny Deila at the Glasgow club, but he has dropped down the pecking order.

The South American superstar striker said: “He is one of the best coaches in Europe and I am not surprised he is looking to get back in to the game because it is a game he loves.

  8. Very strong appointment from Celtic. Quite a coup.

But Brendan’s arrival MUST be accompanied by a change in fiscal policy – a loosening of the pursestrings and a change in transfer strategy.

If it is, this could be the start of a new MON-esque era.

    Welcome to Celtic!

    Welcome BR

Graham Speirs said he would be absolutely astounded if we got our man.

    Awwwwww. Graham……are you ok

Probably still thinks we missed a trick by not going for McInnes!

Buzzing, absolutely buzzing. Well done Celtic. Sky news using their poll to try and suggest the Celtic support are split on this appointment. Suggestion for a new sky poll: Are the Huns gutted and voting on polls tonight?

  12. this appointment puts sevco under so much pressure – the minute that team starts losing games in the premiership and the team is found out – they will be screaming at king to spend money.

  13. Whilst success can never be guaranteed, I’ve got to say hats doffed to Big DD and even Big Pete.

This appointment shows intent and ambition.

I feel like I felt when Martin was appointed.

On a negative note, I wonder if Ronny would still be in post if we didn’t have the Hun on the horizon and season ticket holders disappearing like snaw of a dyke?

    Anyway moan over

Wish celtic would try and lure big celtic man BERNARD PONSONBY to leave STV and head up our PR dept . Those rats in the Scottish media should NEVER be let near any of our manager and players .

I’ve been fulsome in my criticism of Lawwell and Desmond, so tonight an absolutely thoroughly deserved thank you to those guys for such an incredibly ambitious and optimistic appointment. Watch those season ticket sales soar.

Some people not happy ? Or claiming the credit? Maybe we should just have given the job to Mark McGhee. Then one person would have been happy. For goodness sake, let’s be happy and leave everything else till tomorrow. Big events, hopefully, over the next two weeks.

    Forza Celtic

  19. Although time will tell, it is not unreasonable to think that he has been given at least some modest assurances in that direction.

  27. Pull your necks in as I said “joking”.

As is the way now, Europe is where he will be judged. So it is early days and I hope he does get some players in, especially players he is allowed to choose, that would be another change in the right direction por cierto.
