Bridging the gap with Portuguese transfer fees

352

By all accounts, Virgil van Dijk has had an excellent season for Southampton and now has a trio of the Premier League’s wealthiest clubs on his tail. We knew he was a player when he left as a 23-year-old two years ago, but you don’t really know how a player will measure up in a new environment until he gets there.

Scottish club have suffered from this previously, as players with decent EPL experience under their belts have not cut it herem even Bundesliga players, in the case of Teemu Pukki. Virgil’s success, and that of Victor Wanyama and ‘England’s number one’, reflects on everyone in the current Celtic squad.

You and I watched Celtic bridge the gap between selling our players in the £4m – £6m bracket, to selling between £10m and £12m. But we have hitherto been unable to fetch the kind of money the Portuguese regularly get for their top players (well into the £30m category).

If Virgil van Dijk leaves Southampton for north of £50m, not only will Celtic earn 10% of the fee, at a stroke it will increase the value of our playing squad, whenever the next EPL club comes asking.

Within just over a year of leaving Celtic, I have it on excellent authority that Virgil increased his wages by a factor of 10. His next move, by necessity, will see him earn over £100k per week. Celtic will not compete with those wages; players will not reject them to continue to enjoy our special club.  We live in an era where Celtic players can one day aspire to earn £20m over a four year contract (elsewhere).

The migration south will continue, but if it is appropriately compensated, the opportunity for growth at Celtic will not diminish. It could even improve.  Good luck to you, Virgil.

Now you’re putting a ‘k’, where you should have a ‘d’. Be careful if you’re referring to a player who you think has a wand for a left foot!

Dessybhoy- thanks for reply, we need to do a TV deal similar to Barca/Real to maximise our TV / digital markets, we make our own money ,as well as being part of a League deal.I touted Barry Hearn on here a few years ago to market Scottish Football, look at how big darts is on TV now, and snooker is a 12 month a year sport now.Anyone who can get 500,000 to watch live fishing on Sky is a genius.HH

Word of The Day(Something TRIFC are getting used to this spring …..)

    frigorific /ˌfrɪɡəˈrɪfɪk/

    adjective

    1. producing cold

    2. causing cold or freezing

Word Origin and History for frigorific

    adj.

“causing cold,” 1660s, from French frigorifique, from Late Latin frigorificus”cooling,” from Latin frigus (genitive frigoris) “cold, cool, coolness” (see frigid) + -ficus “making,” root of facere “make, do” (see factitious).

can we crowdfund the shortage ? Not fair for you to be out of pocket ( do you even HAVE pockets in your ‘halfsie’ ? )

I really wanted to play in the golf contest, but my lack of any golfing ability whatsoever may have been too much of a handicap.I don’t think I’m fit enough to go a full four quarters either….. ;-)

Strange about the Paris Golfers. I spoke to them both on the Wednesday evening, and both were very much looking forward to playing……i came in on the same flight as them from CDG, and they were both lugging around their clubs in big travel bags. Hope they’re both okay.

Comparisons are odious! I only come on to defend MO’N when he’s being damned by faint praise, or if I feel full cognisance of his achievements, like the 36 point miracle turnaround in 2000-01 against financially doped-up, improperly registered cheats, with a squad worth millions, who then spent 12 ( yeah, that’s right, lady, twelve!) million on one player, not forgetting having teams like Dundee in the league, whose squad contained players with Serie A experience, is lacking. Oh, and he won a treble against such competition, too, of course!

All in a season when we’d have settled for at least putting a challenge in, given the 21 point gap in the previous one, just as a club which wasn’t around back then would now.

If you’re asking which season I enjoyed more, this or 2000-01, it’s easy. I was attending back then, ignorant of what was going on at Ibrox. And, as they say, ignorance is bliss.

Bateenbhoy, no need to crowd fund me being out of pocket. Its the charity money I’m interested in. I’ve mailed the man in question asking to be paid in full. Failing that I’ll make up the shortfall myself to BRTH.

If you do want to help though, contact BRTH and ask how you can buy a ticket for his big swally raffle cos it’s still on the go and we have yet to get some winners.

HH and thanks for you’re very kind offer.

Comparisons lead to debate; you yourself use a comparison to estimate MON’s achievement (competing the 21 point deficit to the 15 point victory). We also use 1967 as a benchmark to where we are as a club (IMHO).

Both seasons were magnificent, but (having attended both season) I would say what we witnessed this season will never be achieved again in my lifetime. Also, I have enjoyed the football being played as more than anytime since Jock Stein as here!

  17. Johnny Hayes? I don’t have a problem in signing the best playing in Scotland who doesn’t wear hoops.

I’m happy as long as Celtic are still going after wee Paddy Roberts. Give Mickey Johnson pre-season with the first team and see how he gets on. If he is a little bit behind the first team you send him out on loan.

    Same goes for Christie.

  18. VFR

I watched as Brendan Rodgers came within a Steven Gerrard slip of winning the Premiership for Liverpool, and had no doubt, even after some of the qualifiers and Barça hammering, that he’d run riot up here, where the competition is nowhere near as stiff as it was back in MO’N’s first season.

Surely every Celtic fans wants the incumbent manager to be the greatest ever, no matter who their personal favourite is, as it would mean at least another Big Cup!

Get back to me when Brendan’s won 5-in-a-row, like Martin did!

I have tickets for BRTH’s raffle already, even though i don’t drink any of the evil poison which is being offered. :-).

Don’t like the thought of you, or anyone else being out of pocket though, especially after the work you put in to the golf outing, and would happily ‘chip in’ a little. I know it’s for a good cause, so i don’t mind.

it was a very brief introduction last week, sadly, but sure that there’ll be more opportunities in the coming season, especially as I’m looking to wind down on the work travel commitments which might allow more time to get to CP for games. I’ll wave to you as i pass you on the road :-)

    James Doleman:

Proceedings resume. Defence Advocate Donald Findlay QC rises to begin his address to the jury

Findlay begins by telling the jury about a clerk of the court who used to say “you can’t rush these things, justice is too important.”

Findlay “The public are entitled to see justice being done.”

Findlay “In this course of this trial you have seen witness after witness come into court and refuse to take responsibility for anything”

    “It wasnae me”

Findlay “People are clearly giving evidence on what they know now..I’ve never made a mistake with the benefit of hindsight”

Findlay urges the jury to assess evidence based on what people knew at the time. What happened later to Rangers “irrelevant”

Findlay on Crown witnesses “They are trying to protect their place in history”

Findlay “Football is a game of passion, it gets you” but adds that this also is irrelevant, “is about a company, Rangers Football Club PLC”

Findlay The two big Scottish football clubs make a huge contribution to Scottish life”

Continues “But in the end has nothing to do with this case”

Well, another signing over at Dodgyroofs Stadium, and once again,no sponsors logos to be seen anywhere. No strip,no logos,no ad boards.Have the SMSM picked up on this?.Heaven forbid. Not that i care, but if this were us,the whole lot would be swarming over it.Cannot think of a reason they would snub the only people putting money into their coffers apart from the Gullybillys.Another arrow for Ashleys lawyers to use in the upcoming trial,I would think.

Findlay The Advocate Depute had lot to say about the roles people have in court “but didn’t have much to say about the role of the defence
