Bridging the gap with Portuguese transfer fees

352

By all accounts, Virgil van Dijk has had an excellent season for Southampton and now has a trio of the Premier League’s wealthiest clubs on his tail. We knew he was a player when he left as a 23-year-old two years ago, but you don’t really know how a player will measure up in a new environment until he gets there.

Scottish club have suffered from this previously, as players with decent EPL experience under their belts have not cut it herem even Bundesliga players, in the case of Teemu Pukki. Virgil’s success, and that of Victor Wanyama and ‘England’s number one’, reflects on everyone in the current Celtic squad.

You and I watched Celtic bridge the gap between selling our players in the £4m – £6m bracket, to selling between £10m and £12m. But we have hitherto been unable to fetch the kind of money the Portuguese regularly get for their top players (well into the £30m category).

If Virgil van Dijk leaves Southampton for north of £50m, not only will Celtic earn 10% of the fee, at a stroke it will increase the value of our playing squad, whenever the next EPL club comes asking.

Within just over a year of leaving Celtic, I have it on excellent authority that Virgil increased his wages by a factor of 10. His next move, by necessity, will see him earn over £100k per week. Celtic will not compete with those wages; players will not reject them to continue to enjoy our special club.  We live in an era where Celtic players can one day aspire to earn £20m over a four year contract (elsewhere).

The migration south will continue, but if it is appropriately compensated, the opportunity for growth at Celtic will not diminish. It could even improve.  Good luck to you, Virgil.

  3. A STOR MHA CHROI @ 1:50 PM,

You know it’s been a very interesting case in many ways this.

Of course having tweets and MSM reports to rely on means we are not seeing the whole picture.

But following it I found it confusing and had to keep reminding myself what the charge against C Whyte was and forget Ticketus, Lloyd’s, RFC PLC etc etc.

What CW is charged with is Fraud against “Murray”, I know there’s another Charge vis~a~vis Company Law but if I can stick to the Fraud charge.

Now when you consider that the specifics, are not detailed on the SPA or any other document but rather in general agreements between CW and Team with “Murray” i.e. The contention that “Murray” thought the funds for the deal were coming from CW and they would never have sold “The Club” if they had known about the Ticketus agreement and we have heard on Oath “Murray” witnesses state this.

D Findley will no doubt Sum up for the defence and that will be interesting and the Judge will Instruct the Jury on Monday, again it should be interesting and we will the await the outcome.

But after calling all these “Experts” and perusing huge riems of documentation it comes down to who is believed.

I know, as the AD pointed out, its not a breach of Contract Case.

But there is an old saying… A verbal agreement is not worth the paper it’s written on…

We will probably know this time next week what’s what and we’ll get a few wise and knowledgable heads dissecting things but I do find it Curious.

I’ve been having a wee look at the qualifiers for the CL next season; as it stands, we are 24th in the seedings list so would be in line for Pot 3 if we qualify; so that should make it a wee bit easier I would hope.

Looking at the squad we have, the manager we have and our potential opponents I would be very, very surprised if we don’t qualify via the Champions route. Unless the wheels fall off, it looks a real probability.

  10. Just seen John Kennedy saying KT will be fine to play against England with a gum shield, KT if your looking in dont take silly risks with your health, let your body recover properly.

  11. We need to concentrate on keeping the players that we have. Beginning with Armstrong who is not a Celtic fan and who owes Celtic nothing. He has won the lot at Celtic and is first choice for Scotland. He could go south and sign a £5m deal.

We also need to keep Dembele, Rogic, Griffiths, Brown, Gordon, Simunovic Tierney and Boyata.

We are losing Toure, Commons, Ambrose, O’Connell

GMS, Cifci, Janko, Henderson seem to have been told to find other club. We may need to pay up their contracts.

we have young players Ajer, Nisbet, McCart, Fasan, Christie, Johnston, Aitkinson who need game time if they are to develope

Our players will be on performance related bonuses and we wont grudge them the rewards for a wonderful season.

We are also investing in Celtic Park with a new £1million hybrid pitch and more investment at Lennoxtown.

We need to retain enough cash to buy Paddy Roberts if Man City decide he is surplus in late august.

I can see no players in Scotland good enough to get into Brendans best team Hayes, McGinn would be at best back ups.

If we start the season with the same squad, I wont be disappointed

Surprised at Ryan Jack. He knows just how bad the situation is at Sevcoland and he may have got equivalent money in the English championship. Destined to follow the David Templeton and Michael O’Halloran road to obscurity.

  16. Darren Fletcher signs for Stoke. Another rumour busted.

When i see someone in a Celtic shirt at Paradise, I’ll believe that we’ve signed him. The SMSM don’t have a clue about our business, and i don’t see that changing with Mr Rodgers in charge.

I see that on UEFA website for Europa League First Qualifying Round Sevco has been allocated a club coefficient of 3725.

Can anyone explain how a club which has never played in Europe has such a coefficient? Is this what is deemed to be that of the country? Thanks. HH

Correct – the Huns have the basic coefficicient of Scotland as they have not played in Europe for the last 5 years.

We are 3rd top seeds in Pot 4 and it looks unlikely that we will progress to Pot 3 unless there are some notable casualties in Qualififying .

Also there are teams in the eventual CL Group pots with lower coefficients than us – look at Pot 1 according to the ever excellent and accurate Bert Kassies site.

Of course the coefficient calculation changes next season due the the CL revamp but Bert will get it right for us.

  20. When we tracked down Jimmy, in Vietnam I thought that was pretty special.

Jimmy told us a great story about creating that Jock Stein t-shirt, wearing it in Lisbon, getting the jail and much more. There’s a link to his wonderful story in the article below, if you missed it.

If the magical t-shirt did well to lead us to Jimmy then it was still working wonders on Saturday morning, just before leaving for Hampden, when I got an email from Jonathan.

Jonathan, who lives in Switzerland, was in Glasgow for the Cup Final and wanted to get two of our Jock Stein t-shirts for him and his dad. He wanted them because his grandfather’s name is on the shirt. Here’s what happened…

  21. embramike supporting Res 12 on

Further to qualifying for CL group stages, Bert’s estimates are based on top seeds winning through in each round and of course the recent change in composition of Pot 1 to accommodate the champions of top 8 ranked countries regardless of their individual coefficients.

Therefore if all goes to seeding we will probably remain in Pot 4 for group stages. Still we will be seeded all, the way through, likely top seeds in Q2 and second top seeds in Q3 & 4.

Celtic Park , particularly on CL evenings, shows how ridiculous that situation is.
