Business complete after Griffiths

1474

With Leigh Griffiths set to sign in the next few moments our business for the January transfer window is complete.  As well as Leigh, we added 20-year-old Icelandic striker Holmbert Fridjobsson, and 23-year-old Norwegian left-midfielder, Stefan Johansen.

I expect Johansen and Griffiths to be holding down a starting place no later than next month.  Johansen’s case will be made all the more straightforward if Joe Ledley accepts an offer from Crystal Palace, although he may choose to wait until the summer before leaving.

We’ll be wondering why we signed Mo Bangura years from now, he patently didn’t look a player at Celtic.

Neil Lennon has a fixer-upper with Leigh, a player he has taken a number of references for and believes he can turn into a productive Celtic player.   The player’s personal history is something he has to put behind him now.  I’ve read many comments on this subject over the last few days, with some empathy, but it’s just as well Twitter wasn’t around in the 60s, 70s or 80s.  Some of our heroes from past eras have been more than a tad off-colour in my earshot.

Time for Leigh to get onto the field and do what he does best.

Is that a new word for money?

Surely they could rattle through the Daniel Cousin paperwork between themselves and the SFA?

So it looks like 2 in and 2 going out for our CPL qualification preparations. Whatever you think of the quality of player coming in, ultimately we’ve replaced experience with inexperience. I have my doubts but hopefully that’s good enough to get through to the CPL proper!

    HH!

  5. Ellboy, we might not have Samaras for those games though. He has been excellent in previous qualifiers. Forgive my negativity this evening but I expect more struggles against abysmal continental opponents.

There is no point buying player for 4/6 games a season until we leave the spl we should do what we’re doing, just look around the other league in europe to see what they can spend, thats the big teams, we can’t compete. This is our reality and the board knows it, time we excepted it.

I posted something similar earlier. I don’t know why we can’t give players a cut of the sale fee when they move on (eg 10%). That way if a £5m-rated player allows his contract to run down he gets nothing, rather than the £500,000. Thus surely gives the player an incentive to extend their contract, or – if they are set on leaving – they are more likely to leave BEFORE their contract runs out. The more we make, the more they make and vice-versa. Maybe I’m missing something…..

  9. The class and dignity of Sandy Easdale shows in an interview today,ey?

I’m warming to wee Craigy every day now…….

Whyte was famously outwitted and outmanoeuvred by Charles Green and Imran Ahmad when they acquired the club but Easdale believes that Whyte should accept this and move on, especially given that he has nothing to do with the present regime.

Easdale claims he has never met or had dealings with Whyte and that if Whyte turned up he would personally escort him off the premises.

“ I have never met or spoke to the man but I personally would throw him down the marble stair case if he ever turned up at Ibrox.”

Rangers fans will certainly be cheering this last statement.

  10. Kevin, we aren’t going to leave the SPL. Nobody wants us. Thanks to good signings in recent years, we have cash to spend. We can acquire players who don’t cost huge amounts of money. It is not unreasonable to ask Celtic to pay 3-4 million for an upcoming player.

Not negative at all I think your opinion is realistic. To me we’re in a worse position than we were for our last qualification campaign. You can’t continue to lose big players and expect to produce at the highest level without properly replacing them.

I know John we kind of did break the model with Dirk and its been a waste of money, So we buy 3 or 4 for the price of 1 were we increase our chances of finding a gem and making money off him. For the past 4/5 windows it’s worked and boosted the clubs coffers which we don’t spend incase there no european football. It’s our safety net.

  15. kevinlasvegas Supporting Wee Oscar Knox on

Being Honest I am pretty disappointed if JL and GS stick around and don’t sign extensions just to make us money as both player clearly love the club and have been more than just players for us, JL would never have got the exposure he got with is and GS would have been a forgotten man in the english lower leagues, GS especially as how many times he let us down and things he cost us and people still stood by him.

  16. Sure the obese Paul Le Guen could get a whip round going, organise a stash of scope for themselves? Not a stash, heavens. That’s too undignified. A fund. That’s better. A fund. It’s better, but it lacks a certain… erm… dynamism. What about keeping fund but adding a descriptor? Fighting! That’s it. A fighting fund. Buckets. To be filled full of scope to amass a fund to pay for fighting. Doddle.

  18. Kev, I accept your points and broadly concur with Celtic’s model. These are good times generally but I don’t accept that we cannot try to sign a top class player. Afterall VVD came to Scotland despite there being no competition. The club remains attractive.

It is too early to say that Dutch Dirk is a waste of money.

    Take care out there.
