Cadete scandal casts shadow

1236

Alexander (Sandy) Bryson has been mentioned in reports concerning another controversial matter in SFA history.  He was Head of Registrations when Celtic tried to register Jorge Cadete in 1996.  That case led to SFA chief executive, Jim Farry, being dismissed for gross misconduct after he failed to register the player in time for him to face Rangers in a Scottish Cup tie.

The Burness report into what happened noted that Farry “deflected responsibility to Mr (Sandy] Bryson (head of registrations] …. (on] certain executive decisions”.  In a contemporary article, Mirror Group Newspapers noted “it is unclear what part registration chief Sandy Bryson may have played in this debacle”.

  1. Agree Fergus would not take this on the chin, but today we probably miss Paul McBride even more.

  2. From CSA

We need to get out of this corrupt league we play in.

Celtic needs to get themselves out of this corrupt football league that we play in, if we don’t, I don’t foresee Celtic FC being able to maintain its high standards, and quality of player next season.

After today’s announcement by Lord Nimmo Smith, I believe it will see another reduction in the number Celtic supporters who purchase season tickets.

This is just another kick in the teeth to ordinary everyday supporters, when you can fine a club which no longer exists by way of punishment for cheating, this is just a laughable decision.

Coming hard on the heels of today’s front page of the Glasgow Herald about Police misuse of their anti-sectarian law powers.

    fears-over-police-misuse-of-anti-sectarian-powers.20366385-utm_source=headlines&utm_medium=email

This whole investigation has been a sham from day one, both the SPL and the SFA have been hiding under a blanket, maybe they think what they are doing is in the best interests of Scottish Football, I would suggest that supporters of all the clubs with the obvious exception of one will be dismayed by the announcement.

Oldco have been found guilty of cheating, yet the President of the SFA, who was instrumental in the cheating remains in place in his office at Hampden.

The Scottish Football Authorities are an embarrassment; they should all hand in their resignation with immediate effect.

I have decided now that I will not personally attend any more matches at Hampden Park, I believe a lot of football supporters will do like-wise.

  3. BrotherAidanIwisnaelate on

I will always support my team. That said, why pay to watch competitions that are corrupt then, now, and for the forseeable future. The decision only confirms what we have known for years and opens the cesspit of Scottish football for the world to see its corruption. At least in Italy they are prepared to challenge the corruption. Not in Scotland.

The result of the Tax Tribunal and the Nimmo farce ensure that Scottish football will continue to be corrupt and for the benefit of the dignified brougue wearers.

The question as the Clash said, ‘ Should I stay or should I go?’

  4. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors on

From reading some posts, there is no doubt that the outcome of this tribunal is SERIOUSLY flawed and surely this will be addressed by the appropriate Government Regulatory / Legal Ombudsman……and / or UEFA

  5. Just found this little gem on page 17:

” It can be seen that each of these side-letters contains an undertaking by Oldco to the Specified Player “to fund the MGMRT”. A similar undertaking is found in every other side-letter before us and it is clear to us (as we believe it must have been to anyone at Oldco with even a basic grasp of legal matters) that the undertaking was contractually binding as between Oldco and the player.”

EBT payments were part of the contract between the player and the club. Wages, in other words. Or even taxable income.

  6. Oscar Pistorius is now claiming to be a Rangers fan to boost his chances of getting away with murder.

‘Agree Fergus would not take this on the chin, but today we probably miss Paul McBride even more.’

Paul McBride would not have criticised Lord Nimmo Smith.

  8. corrib04 is Neil Lennon on

    Big Nan,

Do we want to be accused of being akin to follow follow?

    What next, his address?

  9. ……and what were the SPL’s legal team doing when Bryson was putting words into Nimmo Smith’s mouth?

Probably out for a smoke as it didn’t concern them.

This whole charade was planned by Murray, way back when he announced he wanted to sell.

White came in, again, on plan, and spelled out exactly what would happen to the club.

Today was almost the final piece.

Next up, Green will sell up, giving the “investors” their cash back and the True Blues will assume ownership in a squeaky clean, culturely intact, den of iniquity that they always have been.

Many Celtic supporters will re-acquaint with victim mode and carry on railing against injustice.

Many will say, “no more” and Celtic will be damaged.

Whatever happens, Celtic have to do or say something meaningful, or else the suspicion will grow into a certainty, that they have accepted their place in the scheme of things, even, perhaps, compliant.

Celtic are in a situation where they shouldn’t be, through no fault of their own.

However, how they react will determine their future.

The Celtic support don’t all follow blindly and are not slow to vent their anger against the club over relatively minor issues.

It would be folly to misjudge this situation, but I’m confident that they wont.

  10. I can smell the stench from what happened today over here – 1200 miles away.

Never expected a different outcome tbh.

The footballing authorities in Scotland are corrupt as well as incompetent.

Celtic is a Scottish-based club with very strong Irish roots – always has been and always will be. However, that does not mean that the club has to compete in a league competition against other Scottish clubs for eternity.

The sooner CFC can find an escape route to (almost) any cross-border regional league, the better imo!

    HH!!

  11. ernie – I see what you’re saying, but I’m not sure LNS is the real villain here. The key element to this decision is the incredible logic that the players in question were improperly registered but still eligible to play. Not sure if LNS could reach another conclusion given the context of Bryson’s advice. Take away the crime of fielding ineligible players and it becomes much harder to reverse results.

Thanks for your excellent build up to this black day for the ‘beautiful game’ here in Scotland.

For my own part, I am still feeling sick at this shocking piece of whitewashery by LNS and his accomplices, and in a real quandary about my support for the game.

The ruling provides further evidence (if any were needed) to the view that football in this country is run by and on behalf of peepil who see no shame in rigging the rules and making them up as they go along.

The verdict is also justification for the morally challenged among us, being as it is a cheat’s charter: do what you want; just don’t tell us about it, above all, don’t get caught, but if you do [get caught], don’t worry [insert here, wink, nudge or funny handshake].

If this isn’t a ruling based on ‘brotherhood’, then I will eat one of my few remaining hats.

  13. Sandy Bryson now eh….?

When you think of the helping hands they they have received on the pitch, off the pitch…. All the episodes too numerous to mention over the decades..

Then consider desperate helping hands to keep cash flow going during their death spin from 2008 on… Captain Unbookables’ grappling by the throat going unpunished…Craig Leveins’ anger after being robbed twice, Dougie Dougie, the Shame Game, the response of the Scottish Government.. etc etc etc….

There is only one logical conclusion..

Scotland and its Football Association are Beyond Parody…..

    Which raises the question..

Is this ‘Ludicrous Showbusiness’… Simply The Brand?

  14. Printing photos of guys involved might be perceived by others as a hun like witchhunt, might be best not to.

  15. At the end of the day LNS should have come up with a decision on the EBT’s and whether they were against SPL rules or not. He then should have kicked the decision process, as regards punishments, etc, back to the SPL/SFA. There has been a cop out from both of these bodies since the huns went into liquidation, because they didn’t see that coming.

There is only one person who comes out of this with any credit – he says he stopped the EBT’s and he killed the huns in the space of 9 months – Craig Whyte ;-)

It has been said often on here that Ranger’s demise began when we we reached our highest point and won the Big Cup.

That is true. They bankrupted themselves trying to emulate us.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if our demise in the years to come was as a result of Ranger’s lowest point?

If this is mishandled by the Celtic FC board I can see many fans drifting away and we may pass Sevco on the way down.

    It is that serious IMHO.

  17. While LNS and the FTT were separate, you do have to wonder had they lost the FTT whether LNS would have had the gonads to state they had not gained an unfair advantage. Strictly speaking they did not asa a consequence of improper registration but still…..

  18. I’m not a season ticket holder so I wont be burning anything.

Todays announcement has vexed me no end. But tomorrow or the next day I’ll have forgotten it.

Celtic will be in Turin on Wednesday but before then Sevco will be in Stirling…. and thereabouts for the next 3 years.

They went bust – but I always knew their fans wouldn’t go away. I hoped they might at least come back chastened – apparently not.

Nonetheless – their trophies mean nothing to me. I don’t need a committee or a judge to tell me they cheated.

If it had went the other way (it never would) Sevco fans wouldn’t have accepted the verdict. I don’t accept it now. To me those years are a bogey.

But Im not going to let it spoil my enjoyment of Celtic.

The Rangers FC 2012 and their fans are now and will forever be the moral inferiors of Celtic FC and their fans.

They may never admit it but they know it in their hearts nonetheless.

I’ll content myself with my moral superiority. I know it they know it.

That’s what makes it different from my forefathers there was always a wee scope for doubt. Now we both KNOW in our hearts without any shred of Doubt.

Why didn’t LNS challenge the advice?

Given LNS read the SPL rules and gave his own view on them why Mr Bryson so innocently accepted on SFA rules of registration without challenge by LNS

So, a precedent has been set. The penalty for side letters is £250k. The benefit allows you to sign players you usually couldnt and win prizes and income you previously couldnt

So, we should be doing this now

Except for one little thing…….do you honestly think that if we had been found guilty of what oldco have been up to the punishment would have been the same?

They are all coming out of the woodwork now. Gordon Smith on Sky. Cant listen to this any more. Football is dying for me. FIFA, Eufa, SFA the corruption is endemic in the game. World cups in countries with no football base, match-fixing, admin errors, financial doping.

Too right. Always remember that there are many, many Sevconians who are embarrassed at the lack of dignity shown by their club throughout their fiasco. They see themselves as an important part of the fabric of Scottish/British society and going bust idles not comfortably with them. Yes, the Orcs among them will crow about their retention of titles but deep down they know that they cheated and we will always have the right to point that out to them. A right that I will be exercising.

On the subject of Sandy Bryson and competence and incompetence I would refer you to a study published in 2000.

Don’t suppose their moral bankruptcy being held up for the world to see will bother them one little bit.

My mantra since this all began was, “what will Celtic do”?

For me, and I presume others, that is what matters now.

It has been a-while in the making, so surely some thought has been given to a strategy.

    We will see.

I am well aware that, due to geography, I am no longer a match attender, but after over sixty years of following Celtic, I have a heavy heart and don’t want to see the club suffer more.
