Celtic and Hamilton will both want this game out of the way

73

Hamilton Accies’ great talent is being able to take points off those around them.  They lost to St Johnstone in October, but that was their only defeat to teams in the bottom half of the league since the opening day of the season.  Between now and Boxing Day they play St Mirren, Hearts and St Johnstone, the three teams below them in the table – and all at New Douglas Park (or the Fountain of Youth Stadium, if you insist).

How they perform in those games will go a long way to determining whether or not they are a Premiership team next season.  Their away trips to Celtic Park and Pittodrie between now and then will not feature in their priorities.

This is a game Celtic want to put to bed with as little exertion as possible and Hamilton will want out of the way before preparing for St Mirren on Saturday.  We would do both teams a favour by scoring a few early on and cruising through the second half.

  1. On this day in 1982 myself and a few compatriots were at Hampden getting completely soaked to the skin watching Celtic win the League Cup with goals from Charlie Nicholas and Murder McLeod. I had a stookie on my foot and we had to get there early because of that. By the end of the day it was melted in the rain and I had to go and get a new wan the next day.

Wonder what bonus has been offered to the HA players for a though game before the final, maybe a bounty on certain players.

If rules about shareholding’s can be ignored why would using that influence be any different. Again we get the story that a lesser team will approach a game against us as low priority, it is their big game of the season and their chance in the shop window to show how well they can play, why would any player want to get this out the way it’s the reason they exist the big games and this is as big as it gets for them.

  6. Robinbhoy – great memories of that game, despite torrential rain throughout. I’m sure it was sponsored by “Telejector” whom I’ve never heard of since…..

That was a great attacking Celtic team with a young Charlie unstoppable and totally unaware of the huge tit he would become on Sky Sports and in the Press 30+ years later.

We won only the league cup that season and definitely under achieved – we would have won the league If we had a centre back partnership of similar quality to Miller/McLeish or Narey/Hegarty.

  9. On form – Christie over Tam rogic atm for me as No. 10.

Place for Olivier Ntcham – best MF in the land when in the mood alongside Callum.

The mercurial Mikey on from the start to run them ragged and get some more game time.

The Griff starts up front. Carpe Diem wee man.

Defence picks itself – Taylor, 2 giants and Frimpong.

    Rest Broonie.

Keep the Sevvies guessing for Sunday……

  10. Thanks Hunderbirds – and I do not disagree with your analysis of CN’s direction…..still falling……..all pretty sad for what was a fantastic talent in his day.

  11. GB back tonight. If we get a normal Hamilton performance they will be much needed to keep up some kind of atmosphere.

Going again for the 4_0.Last bet took us to win by more than 3.Somehow my mate ,who normally puts the bets on,nearly lives adjacent to of the few bookies here, translated that as 4_0.Anyway both losers. The bets, not me and him.H,mmm.

Will be upset if Lenny does not play Griff from the start. He needs his chance.Looks fit enough. If Eddy does miss Sunday,I have fears of Wee Lewis leading the line.Memories of Rodgers playing Mikey against them still haunt me.

  12. My team for tonight: Forster, Frimpers, Julien, Ajer, Taylor, Ntcham, Christie, MJ, Rogic, Morgan, Griffiths

That’s playing Morgan on the wing. He’s earned the chance to play in his favored position. MJ has looked brilliant.

I suspect that NL will pick a team very similar to the weekend. Some suggestions Ntcham might come into the side.

  13. Timaloy 29

I would be amazed if Lennie left out Broonie AND Calmax tonight. Indeed, I would be surprised if he left out either player.

Andy Robertson of Liverpool said the players are perfectly happy playing lots of games. I feel we often worry too much about the number of games our players play. It doesn`t seem to affect Calum McGregor, the most played player in World Football apparently.

I think Lennie will play what he considers his strongest side and, if we are two or three ahead, substitutions will be made to ensure key players are not injured and the oncoming players are given some game time.

  14. Owing to a lack of attendees, there will be no Arbroath Emerald today so, it is Public Transport for me going down and a lift back.

Anyone going to the Blane Valley pre-game?

  15. I would go with Timaloy29 selection above. We can give Boli or Hayes 30mins as Sub to cover Taylor being unavailable for Sunday. Same with Griff and Eddie maybe Morgan and Elanounossi.

Hamilton are not the worse team and should survive the season. Their artificial surface gives them an advantage at home and it’s there that they will pick up points.

We do need to cross our fingers that we don’t lose anyone to injury. Hamilton are not the worst culprit but they can be rough and agricultural.

  16. Interesting comments about Charlie Nicholas today, totally agree of course. He was my favourite player at that time and sort of my Kenny Dalglish – down to my age. Gutted when he left! Now though…?

Still good value on YouTube with his hunskelping mind you!

  17. glendalystonsils on

    Paul

this game may not be a priority for Hamilton but it will not stop them kicking , leaving a boot in , barging , jersey pulling , achilles raking , stamping on feet, holding and all the various wee delights that our referees seem to think are within the rules . Add to that they will park the bus in a determined display of anti-fitba reminiscent of the Alamo.

We will be ready for it.

  18. Maybe some on here mixing up Charlie the player and Charlie the man? Although the Cannon Ball Kid was a frighteningly good talent, I suspect he was always a Big Time Charlie in his own mind. He was destined for the booze, bevvie and birds lifestyle like so many before him. Signing for Arsenal was a dreadful mistake, but it was the bright lights of London he wanted. Liverpool or Man Utd should have been his next team. Instead “Boring” Arsenal tried to turn him into a midfielder and his decline was terminal.

  19. Lets get this game out of the way….

There’s an Old Firm Final to be played at the weekend…….

Good luck to the Celts today, any win will do in December.

21421 is the new 31213 so it has to be Jullien and Ajer to lock the stable door before the horse has bolted. Broony will use that horse to ride the range ahead, scouting for flailing haymakerers and other ne’er-do-wells.

Taylor, McGregor, Ntcham and Bauer to form an impregnable wall across the Red River Valley, from where we launch Forrest and Christie into Jarama in valiant support of Morgan and the XV International Brigade.

Score prediction 1-0 Sinclair. MoM Fraser Forster again.

Alex McDade, always remembered. A Glasgow man who wrote a song Woody Guthrie took to America.

All the world is like this valley called Jarama. So green and so bright and so fair.

No fascists can dwell in our valley. Nor breathe in our new freedom’s air.

I am sure the players prefer to play and will probably tell you its a benefit to stay sharp.

Sports science tells us that players can benefit from some day’s rest. I wouldn’t mind if Brown played alongside Ntcham. After all, Brown has had a couple of weeks off during international breaks.

As you say, McGregor’s record is impressive. But why risk it when Ntcham is so good?
