Celtic-Juve after two previous tight encounters

1074

Celtic will play Juventus in the last 16 round of the Champions League.  Juve are seven points clear top of the Italian league having won the competition last season without losing a game.  They eliminated reigning European champions, Chelsea, in the last round and finished above a good Shakthar team.

They are remarkably well organised and don’t lose many goals (10 in 17 league games, 7 less than anyone else), but this is a tie Celtic can plan for.  Juventus will present the same kind of challenge Barcelona did in the group stage, but they are not as effective as the Catalans.

Celtic have faced them twice in the European Cup/Champions League previously, winning both home games and losing away on each occasions, controversially in 2001.

I’m up for this one. Fairy-tale story with the lovable Celts the only British representatives in the quarter finals? Loins girded.

  1. I went to the game in 2001. If that is anything to go by :-

    1. Turin bars closed on the day of the game. If you look like a decent bunch with nice haircuts a restaurant or pizzeria may take you you in for some food and refreshments.

    2. Fleet of buses laid on to take visiting fans from near the City Centre to the stadium. That was the Stadio del Alpi which was a bit out of town. Not sure where the new ground is.

    3. Missiles openly launched by Juve fans in upper tiers during the game, including a coin which whacked me in the napper! Police just stood, allowing this to continue without getting involved.

    4. Exciting game. Go into this one expecting the ref to have been well looked after by Juve and you won’t be surprised or disappointed by what might happen during the game.

    5. After the game – fleet of buses to take visiting fans back into City Centre. Buses attacked by pockets of Juve fans.

If train times allow stay in Milan and get the train in and out of Turin for the game.

  2. A wee mistake on the qualification odds on the Will Hill site. Juve are 7/2 !!!!

Boooooom…..absolute beauty of a tie…very tough but then they all potentially were..brings back great memories

  4. If we come out of the transfer window stronger, it will be because the current squad are doing weights.

Bummer I was going to say that a treble with Bayern Munich, Dortmund and PSG looks nice!

  6. I was at the 3-2 game in Turin and despite all the scaremongering about Italian Ultras etc, we took over the city. A few seats and water bottles were lobbed at us inside the stadium. We took it for a bit then responded and they soon stopped.

Loved the trip and hoping to go back. the new stadium will be most welcome, as the Stadio Del Alpi was the biggest khazi out.

Italian teams historically are unpredictable and therefore beatable.

We have nothing to lose, and they will know that.

Tough tie but winnable. Wouldn’t want to give the MSM any reason to belittle our achievements by beating a lesser team anyway!

On another note, I see some of the rags are back on the old huns “warchest” theme. Rather ironic use of the word “warchest” when you think of the money they have deprived the armed forces of by not paying their taxes.

  8. Just a wee note to anyone talking about the draw at work or with other football fans in the boozer. I always like to start of any Champions league chat with the following.

‘As previous winners we have a chance against anyone’

Usually gets right under their skin from the off. Haha

I do agree with your second version but

Conte was not at Juve and not match fixing …….. which is different from what you said first time. So what he did was ‘not tell/report’ or something like that

the Juve match fixing is undeniable but was not exactly yesterday and having had a title stripped, demoted and points deducted – you would think/hope it was off their agenda.

…. and to be honest what they were doing was less dodgy than what the manky mob have been doing recently (or even for 140 years) in that they were trying to get certain ref’s allocated to their games – sounds like part of Fergie’s day to day routine

I’ve looked at this. The last train from Porta Susa is 22.53. No way of making that, even if Juve don’t hang on and take us to extra time

Nicely put. But then Al got gunned down whilst killing auld Roth. :)))))

  12. DBBIA – sorry mate, computer logged me out for some reason.

A 5-0 home win would only ruin the nail biting, arse nipping, last few minutes that we’ve all come to know and……..errm…… enjoy.

  13. Morning all from a very wet North Ayrshire.

Haven’t read back but I just want to say that we will need a right good ref. We have been cheated by this lot already. So, let’s hope we hammer them. Wouldn’t it be great if we were the only BRITSH team to go through.

  14. Johnnyclash @ 11.25 – I had a very similar experience in 2001. Genoa is also worth staying in if you want to avoid Turin other than for the match. Trains in and out of there are regular enough

  15. recall my late brother in law telling me he was never more afraid at a football match that he was in Turin. Bus windows smashed in. Said it reminded him of the old days in Glasgow when the buses were not parked in different parts of the stadium,

Anyway, draw could have been worse……

Surely the more obvious interpretation would be that nothing is going to change.

The fleet of buses were so crowded, we were like sheep going to the market.

Ours didn’t get pelted with anything though. We mixed with Juve fans before game and they were fine, but typically they felt brave when they were in their own bit in the ground.

Otherwise saw no trouble at all the whole trip, doesn’t mean there was none of course.

    It happens.

I’d have no qualms at all going back

  18. Stevo-They have previous both Juve and Conte.Look at the penalty they got against us the last time we played them in Turin, corrupt doesn’t cover it.It’s a treat to be where we are,but we will need strong refs in both games to give us an even chance IMO mate.HH

  19. Allyhuntersgloves on

Charlie Nik on SKY, Juventus are top of La Liga ! how does this guy get a gig?

Ist time in Juve, herded around by Police kept in for ages, no drink in town, forced onto buses back to city centre. (travelled out to Ferrari museum where drink ban ended had a look round then a pleasant afternoon in a restaurant).

Second time in Turin I walked into the bank, asked to buy a ticket was shown a plan of the stadium, bought a ticket on centre line ( half the price of Celtic end tickets), sat amongst the Italian supporters (mostly middle aged guys – a bit like South Stand at CP), game ended, walked out, got on a tram back in City Centre in hotel bar within 10 minutes.

  20. Champions League round of 16 draw:

    Galatasaray v FC Schalke

    Celtic v Juventus

    Arsenal v Bayern Munich

    Shakhtar Donetsk v Borussia Dortmund

    AC Milan v Barcelona

    Real Madrid v Manchester United

    Valencia v Paris Saint-Germain

    FC Porto v Malaga

Looking at the draw the tournament is wide open this year. Barca or AC Milan will go out. Man Utd or real madrid will gop out. Shaktar and Dortmund who have both impressed this season have been paired up so one of those will go out. Arsenal look like going out which is good news because they seem to have the rub of the green against us. That leaves the following I predict to go through.

    Schalke

    Celtic

    Bayern Munich

    Dortmund

    Barca

    Real Madrid

    PSG

    Porto

If we can avoid one of the big guns. Specifically the German sides and the Spanish boys I fancy us to go another round and then anything can happen.

    Wembley is possible.
